Coelioxys coturnix is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae. [1] [2] [3]
Megachilidae is a cosmopolitan family of mostly solitary bees. Characteristic traits of this family are the restriction of their pollen-carrying structure to the ventral surface of the abdomen, and their typically elongated labrum. Megachilid genera are most commonly known as mason bees and leafcutter bees, reflecting the materials from which they build their nest cells ; a few collect plant or animal hairs and fibers, and are called carder bees, while others use plant resins in nest construction and are correspondingly called resin bees. All species feed on nectar and pollen, but a few are kleptoparasites, feeding on pollen collected by other megachilid bees. Parasitic species do not possess scopae. The motion of Megachilidae in the reproductive structures of flowers is energetic and swimming-like; this agitation releases large amounts of pollen.
The genus Megachile is a cosmopolitan group of solitary bees, often called leafcutter bees or leafcutting bees; it also includes the called resin bees and mortar bees. While other genera within the family Megachilidae may chew leaves or petals into fragments to build their nests, certain species within Megachile neatly cut pieces of leaves or petals, hence their common name. This is one of the largest genera of bees, with more than 1500 species in over 50 subgenera. The alfalfa leafcutter bee is managed on a commercial scale for crop pollination, and has been introduced by humans to various regions around the world.
Old World quail is a collective name for several genera of mid-sized birds in the tribe Coturnicini of the pheasant family Phasianidae. Although all species commonly referred to as "Old World quail" are in the same tribe, they are paraphyletic with respect to the other members of the tribe, such as Alectoris, Tetraogallus, Ammoperdix, Margaroperdix, and Pternistis.
Coelioxys sodalis is a bee from the family Megachilidae, one of numerous kleptoparasitic bees in the tribe Megachilini. Members of the genus Coelioxys exhibit kleptoparasitic behavior in that they lay their eggs in the nests of other bees, typically those of the related genus Megachile. As this behavior is similar to that of cuckoos, such bees are referred to as cuckoo bees. These host-parasite relationships are complex. Host insects of the brood parasite C. sodalis include Megachile melanophaea, M. texana, and M. rotundata.
Coelioxys, common name leaf-cutting cuckoo bees or sharp-tailed bees, is a genus of solitary kleptoparasitic cuckoo bees belonging to the family Megachilidae.
Megachile leachella, also known as the silvery leafcutter bee, is a species of solitary bee in the family Megachilidae. This species is widely distributed in the Western Palaearctic region from Southern Fennoscandia to North Africa and the Middle East, however the precise boundaries of the species range is not fully understood. The species was described by John Curtis in 1828.
Coelioxys confusa is a species of leaf-cutting bee in the genus Coelioxys, of the family Megachilidae. It is found in Himachal Pradesh, India, and while recordings from Sri Lanka are uncertain, they are considered to be true.
Coelioxys minuta is a species of leaf-cutting bee in the genus Coelioxys, of the family Megachilidae. It is found in India, and recordings from Sri Lanka is uncertain.
Coelioxys rufitarsis, common name red-legged cuckoo leafcutter bee, is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae. It is native to North America.
Coelioxys banksi is a species of leafcutter bees in the family Megachilidae. It is a parasite of Megachile relativa nests.
Coelioxys hunteri is a species of hymenopteran in the family Megachilidae.
Coelioxys dolichos is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae.
Coelioxys porterae is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae.
Coelioxys slossoni is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae.
Coelioxys sayi is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae.
Coelioxys menthae is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae.
Jadera coturnix is a species of soapberry bug in the family Rhopalidae. It is found in Central America, North America, and South America.
Coelioxys elongata is a Palearctic species of sharp-tailed bee.
