Colin James Nutley (born 28 February 1944) is an English filmmaker who became known for his work in Sweden's film and television industry.
Colin James Nutley was born in Gosport on 28 February 1944. He attended an art college in Portsmouth.
Nutley began his career in British television as a graphic designer. He then turned to drama and documentary filmmaking for ITV, BBC, and Channel 4. He directed the first two episodes of children's television series Press Gang , but was unhappy with the final edit and asked for his name to be removed from the credits. [1] He was the driving force behind Southern Television's ITV-networked children's series The Flockton Flyer , taking personal responsibility for much of the casting and acting as a producer of the first series (1977) before producing and directing the second series (1978).
Nutley's work in Sweden began with the making of Annika , a TV series about a Swedish girl who spent three weeks on England's Isle of Wight as a language student. Then came the documentary Where Roses Never Die, a film about life in a small Swedish country village which was also the inspiration for House of Angels . His first feature The Ninth Company was a black comedy, the story of a group of young conscripts that tries to make a smart economic killing. Blackjack , was about love and betrayal in a small town, set against the backdrop of dance-music bands. House of Angels opened in 1992 and is to date one of the most loved Swedish films of all time. The film was awarded two Guldbagge Awards for "Best Film" and "Best Direction" at the Swedish Film Awards that year. [2]
The Last Dance was a black comedy about a rollercoaster friendship between two big city couples, and won "Best Actress" and "Best Photography" awards at the 1993 Swedish Film Awards. House of Angels – the Second Summer opened on Christmas Day 1994 and was an immediate box office success. Such Is Life , a drama comedy about love, broken promises and fulfilled dreams, opened in Sweden in October 1996. Under the Sun , a story about trust, friendship and love set in the mid-1950s, opened on Christmas Day 1998 and Gossip , starring an ensemble cast of ten of Sweden's top actresses, opened all over Sweden on Christmas Day 2000. Deadline (2001) and Paradise (2003) were both based on Liza Marklund's best-selling novels. The Queen of Sheba's Pearls (2004) was an English language film set in post war England in the 1950s. Heartbreak Hotel opened in 2006 and Nutley's latest feature Angel in 2008.
House of Angels, The Last Dance and Under the Sun have all been nominated by the Swedish Film Institute to represent Sweden as Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards (1993, 1994 and 1999). House of Angels was screened out of competition at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival. [3] Under the Sun was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and also received the Special Jury Prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
In 1990, Nutley married Swedish actress Helena Bergström, whom he met while filming Blackjack . [4] He is 20 years older than her and was married when they met. [5] They have a son named Timothy and a daughter named Molly, who is an actress. [5] He also has a son named Daniel from his previous marriage. [6] They split their time between an apartment on Sweden's Kungsholmen island and a house in the countryside. [6] [7]
Pernilla August is a Swedish actress, director and screenwriter. Being one of Sweden's leading actresses and a longtime collaborator with director Ingmar Bergman, she won the Best Actress Award at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival for her role in his The Best Intentions. She is best known internationally for portraying Shmi Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.

Sven Justus Fredrik Wollter was a Swedish actor, writer, and political activist. Wollter is one of the most renowned Swedish actors, he was awarded Best Swedish actor twice. In his native country, he became widely known through his role as Madame Flod's son Gusten in Swedish Television's adaption of The People of Hemsö by August Strindberg in 1966. Later he had several notable roles, including in 1976 when he played Detective Sergeant Lennart Kollberg in Bo Widerberg's film The Man on the Roof. She has appeared on the stages of the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten) and the Stockholm City Theatre, but is best known for her work in films. The Women on the Roof is considered a breakout role for her. Her most awarded film is The Last Dance, for which she received the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Festival Awards in Montreal and Istanbul. Her husband, Colin Nutley, has directed her in several movies. In 2007, she directed for the first time for the film Mind the Gap. She is also a screenwriter and a singer.
Jan Rikard Wolff was a Swedish actor and singer. His career included both film roles in House of Angels and its two sequels and theatre roles such as in Waiting for Godot at Royal Dramatic Theatre, and A Chorus Line at The Göteborg Opera. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour for his work with French music. He had also been awarded a Grammis, and received the Swedish Academy's 2017 prize for theatre, as well as a royal medal for his service as an actor.

The Queen of Sheba's Pearls is a 2004 Swedish-British drama film set in England post-WWII. Helena Bergström plays Nancy Ackerman who mysteriously arrives on the Pretty family's doorstep. Ackerman looks eerily similar to Jack Bradley's mother who inexplicably died in an WWII-related accident 8 years prior. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that Ackerman is the identical twin separated from Jack's mother at birth. Meanwhile Jack's father, a former marine, has clouded feelings for Ackerman; he cannot decide if his feelings for her are growing on their own merits or are based on those towards his deceased wife. Ackerman also proves to be an unsettling force in Jack's life by offering advice that turns out to be eerily omniscient and fairy godmother-like. The movie was produced, directed and written by Colin Nutley who is married to the film's star, Helena Bergström.

House of Angels – The Second Summer is a 1994 Swedish drama film directed by Colin Nutley starring Helena Bergström, Rikard Wolff, Ron Dean, and Ernst Günther. It is the second Swedish drama film about the mansion Änglagård located in a small isolated hamlet in Västergötland, Sweden. The film premiered on 25 December 1994. In both the films Änglagård and Änglagård - andra sommaren Sven Wollter and Viveka Seldahl acting as a married couple which they also were in real life from 1971 until Seldahl died 2001. They have also acted as married couple in the 2001 Swedish film En sång för Martin.

Deadline is a 2001 Swedish thriller. It was released in the US as The Bomber which is a direct translation of its original Swedish title Sprängaren which is the same as the novel by Liza Marklund from which it was adapted. It stars Helena Bergström, Örjan Ramberg, Ewa Fröling and Pernilla August amongst others. The film was directed by Colin Nutley, who is also married to the lead actress Helena Bergström.
