The Armed Forces of the Kyrgyz Republic is the national military of Kyrgyzstan. It was originally formed from the former Soviet forces of the Turkestan Military District stationed in newly independent Kyrgyzstan. It consists of the Ground Forces, the Air Force and the National Guard. Affiliated security forces to the armed forces included the Internal Troops, the State Committee for National Security and the Border Troops.
Kyrgyzstan, officially the Kyrgyz Republic, also known as Kirghizia, is a landlocked country in Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the south, and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek. Ethnic Kyrgyz make up the majority of the country's six million people, followed by significant minorities of Uzbeks and Russians. The Kyrgyz language is closely related to other Turkic languages, although Russian remains spoken and is an official language, a legacy of a century of Russification. Ninety percent of Kyrgyzstan's population are Muslim, with the majority of its population following Sunni Islam. In addition to its Turkic origins, Kyrgyz culture bears elements of Iranic, Mongolian and Russian influence.
The president of Kyrgyzstan is both the head of state and the head of government and the highest official of the Kyrgyz Republic. The president, according to the constitution, "is the symbol of the unity of people and state power, and is the guarantor of the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic, and of an individual and citizen." The president is directly elected for no more than one six-year term by the Kyrgyz electorate. The office of president was established in 1990 replacing the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet that existed, in different forms, from 1927 whilst the country was known as the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic.

Almazbek Sharshenovich Atambayev is a Kyrgyz politician who served as the President of Kyrgyzstan from 1 December 2011 to 24 November 2017. He was Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan from 17 December 2010 to 1 December 2011, and from 29 March 2007 to 28 November 2007. He served as Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan (SDPK) from 30 July 1999 to 23 September 2011. Recently, he was imprisoned, facing charges of corruption and manslaughter. On 5 October 2020, election protestors freed Atambayev from prison. After a failed assassination attempt, however, he was imprisoned again on 10 October.

The Security Council of Kyrgyzstan is an political/constitutional body in the Office of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic. Its tasks are to consider internal and external threats to Kyrgyzstan and maintaining its security and defense. Being a purely advisory body, it aides the President in developing his/her decisions related to the Armed Forces of Kyrgyzstan and other law enforcement bodies. The security council was renamed in 2010 to the defense council and was reverted to its former name in March 2017. The Secretary is the head of the council, being a member of the Administration of the President. The current Secretary of the Security Council is Marat Imankulov.
Sadyr Nurgozhoevich Japarov is a Kyrgyz politician, who was the acting prime minister of Kyrgyzstan in the interim government following the resignation of Sooronbay Jeenbekov amidst electoral protests. Japarov also became acting president of Kyrgyzstan after Jeenbekov's resignation, but resigned himself on 14 November 2020. On 10 January 2021, Japarov was elected as President of Kyrgyzstan.
Colonel Kylychbek Akimovich Aidaraliev is a Kyrgyz military leader who is currently the commander the Kyrgyz Air Force. He was born on 5 March 1971 in the village of Myrza-Ake in the Osh Region. In 1993, he graduated from the Stavropol Higher Military School. In 1993, after graduating from the college for further military service, he was sent to military unit 78739 as an instructor pilot of a training helicopter squadron. During his service, he served in the positions of senior instructor pilot, aviation link commander, aviation squadron commander, regiment chief of staff, aviation regiment commander, and deputy aviation commander. In 2012, he graduated from the Academy of Management under the President of the Kyrgyz Republic. On 25 January 2017, Aidaraliev was appointed Commander of the Air Force in a corresponding decree that was signed by President Almazbek Atambayev. In early 2019, Aidaraliev, was severely reprimanded after the crash of Mi-8 MTV helicopter in the mountains of South Inylchek.
