Lee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,395. Its county seat is Beattyville. The county was formed in 1870 from parts of Breathitt, Estill, Owsley and Wolfe counties. The county was named for Robert E. Lee. The area of Kentucky where Lee County is located was a pro-union region of Kentucky but the legislature that created the county was controlled by former Confederates. The town of Proctor, named for the Rev. Joseph Proctor, was the first county seat. The first court was held on April 25, 1870, in the old Howerton House. The local economy at the time included coal mining, salt gathering, timber operations, and various commercial operations. It had a U.S. post office from 1843 until 1918.

Cannel City is an unincorporated community in Morgan County, Kentucky, United States. It lies along Route 191 south of the city of West Liberty, the county seat of Morgan County. In 1901, the Ohio and Kentucky railway tracks were laid through the region and thrived until the Cannel Coal Company's resources were depleted and forestry resources of the Licking River played out at the same time. On November 1, 1933, the last train trip of the Ohio and Kentucky Junction Railroad-Cannel City Line was made and the track was scrapped. During the golden years, there were several grocery stores, a hardware store, post office, mine, bank, blacksmith and an elegant hotel named The DeLancy. Also standing at over 100 years old is the well used by the trains to put water into their engines. Lost over the years was a train depot at the end of Highway 134, where it currently intersects with Highway 191. At one time, the area had a larger population and count of buildings than the present-day county seat West Liberty. After the mine closed, the area still partially thrived during the times after the Great Depression.

Proctor is an unincorporated community in Lee County, Kentucky, United States. It lies along Route 11 on the other side of the river from Beattyville south of the city of Beattyville, the county seat of Lee County. Proctor is also located near the beginning point of the Kentucky River. There are three tributaries which combine near Beattyville and Proctor; the North Fork of the Kentucky River, the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River; and the South Fork of the Kentucky River. For this reason, many local businesses make mention of the "Three Forks".

Willow Shoals is an unincorporated community in Lee County, Kentucky, United States. Located 2 miles below Lock 13 on the North Bank of the Kentucky River, at the mouth of Big Willow Shoals Branch, a Post Office was established at Willow Shoals on 20 September, 1905 with John W. Stephenson as Postmaster. On 25 November, 1905, the post office name was changed to Willow. The post office was discontinued in 1956, with mail then routed to Heidelberg, Kentucky. Willow Shoals appeared as a passenger stop on the Louisville and Atlantic Railroad, and later the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, until at least the 1930s. The tracks passing through Willow Shoals are currently owned by CSX Transportation, and are part of their now-idle Eastern Kentucky Subdivision. Little remains of the original town, with only one residence, two barns, and the building which once served as General Store, Post Office, and Railroad Depot still standing. On 14 July, 2016, the place name was restored to Willow Shoals by the USGS Board of Geographic Names. Willow Shoals is within the boundaries of the Daniel Boone National Forest. It has also appeared it Season 10 episode 6 of Homestead Rescue.
