Conuber sordidum (originally described as Natica sordida by Swainson) is a species of predatory sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk family Naticidae, the moon snails. [2] [3]

Contents

Distribution

East coast of Australia, from Victoria to Queensland. The species also occurs off Tasmania and New Zealand. [4]

Life habits

Conuber sordidum is predatory, feeding mostly on bivalves and gastropods. [5] The species is also known to prey on the soldier crab Mictyris longicarpus by drilling predation. [6] [7] To catch soldier crabs, C. sordidum uses the same stereotyped behaviour as previously described for moon snails hunting shelled molluscan prey. [7]

Habitat

On intertidal muddy sand flats near mangroves or sea weed. [4]

Naticidae

Naticidae, common name moon snails or necklace shells, is a family of minute to large-sized predatory sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the clade Littorinimorpha. The shells of the species in this family are mostly globular in shape.

Mictyris longicarpus Species of crab

Mictyris longicarpus, the light-blue soldier crab, is a species of crab that lives on sandy beaches from the Bay of Bengal to Australia; with other members of the genus Mictyris, it is "one of the most loved crabs in Australia". Adults are 25 mm (1 in) across, white, with blue on their backs, and hold their claws vertically. They feed on detritus in the sand, leaving rounded pellets of discarded sand behind them. The males may form into large "armies" which traverse the beach at low tide, before the crabs dig into the sand to wait for the next low tide. Typically found across the road from Nana's house in Hollywell.

Polinices bifasciatus

Polinices bifasciatus, or two-banded moon snail, is a species of gastropod mollusc. The animal was first described to science in a work authored by English biologists Edward Griffith and Edward Pidgeon. This was a multi-volume translation of George Cuvier's, Le Règne Animal (1830). The Griffith and Pidgeon work went beyond translation and added a supplement that included the description of Polinices bifasciatus. The description of Polinices bifasciatus is attributed to John Edward Gray. It reads, in its entirety, "Pale brown, with two narrow bands".
