The Corsaires de Dunkerque are an ice hockey team in Dunkerque, France. They were founded in 1979, and play in the FFHG Division 1, the second level of French ice hockey. The Corsaires previously played in the Ligue Magnus.

History

The Corsaires de Dunkerque were formed in 1979. After playing in the FFHG Division 1 league through the nineties the team moved up to the Ligue Magnus for the start of the 2002-03 season. [1] After surviving relegation in the 2003-04 season the Corsaires were relegated back to Division 1 due to financial reasons. [1] In 2007 the team were sent to the Division 1 relegation round and were relegated to the FFHG Division 2 for the 2007-08 season. [1] In their fourth season in Division 2 the Corsaires won the 2011 playoffs and earned promotion back to Division 2. [1]

The Ligue Magnus, currently known as Synerglace Ligue Magnus for sponsorship reasons, is the top men's division of the French ice hockey pyramid, established in 1906. Patrick Francheterre is a French retired ice hockey player, coach, manager and international administrator. His playing career included time with CPM Croix and Dogues de Bordeaux as a player-coach, and with the France men's national ice hockey team at the Ice Hockey World Championships and the 1968 Winter Olympics. Luc Tardif is a Canadian-born French ice hockey executive, and former professional ice hockey player. A native of Trois-Rivières, he played junior ice hockey in Quebec, then was an all-star player for the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. During his professional career, he became a naturalized citizen of France, won two Nationale A League titles, and won the Charles Ramsay Trophy four times with Chamonix HC as the league's top scorer. Later in his career, he was a player-coach for the Dragons de Rouen, then served as the team's vice-president and oversaw the youth hockey program.
