In addition to crowning the European champions, the tournament also serves as a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games and World Championship. The France national handball team is supervised by the French Handball Federation, and represents France in international matches. It is the first handball team to have held all three titles twice, and the only national team in its sport to hold six world titles and a total of eleven medals at the World Men's Handball Championship. With a total of five medals, including three gold in 2008, 2012 and 2021, France is also the most successful Handball team at the Summer Olympics. As of January 2024, they are the defending European Champions.

Veszprém KC is a Hungarian professional handball club from Veszprém, that for sponsorship reasons is called ONE Veszprém. Veszprém plays in the Hungarian Nemzeti Bajnokság I and are the most successful team in the country, having won the Hungarian Championship a record 28 times and the Hungarian Cup title a record 31 times. Veszprém has also won the regional SEHA League 5 times.

The Italy national handball team is the national handball team of Italy. It only had 1 appearance in World championship 1997, and the next year hosted the European Championship. It had poor result in both competitions. It never qualified for the Olympic Games. On 9th May 2024 Italy is qualified for IHF World Men’s Handball Championship 2025 in Croatia, Denmark and Norway after beating Montenegro 66-58 in two legs.

The South Korea women's national handball team is the national team of South Korea. Since 1984 the Korean team has not only participated constantly in Olympic Games but also ranked among the top four nations every time until 2012. Korea grabbed the gold medal in 1988 and 1992, won the silver medal in 1984, 1996, 2004 and took bronze medal in 2008. They have earned two World Championship medals so far: In 1995, they also won the World Championship title in Austria/Hungary 1995 World Women's Handball Championship, they came off third to secure the bronze medal at the Croatia in 2003 World Women's Handball Championship. It is a twelve time Asian Champion, the tournament has been won by any other nation only twice.

The women's handball tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics is being held from August 9 to August 23, at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium and National Indoor Stadium in Beijing. Twelve nations are represented in the women's tournament.

The Japan women's national handball team is the national handball team of Japan and is controlled by the Japan Handball Association.

Zamalek Handball Club, also called "Commandos" commonly known as Zamalek H.C, or simply as Zamalek SC, is an Egyptian handball team based in Giza, Egypt. The team enjoyed a successful period in the late 90's and early 2000s becoming league Champions three times, cup winners three times and champions of Iceland two times.

The 2025 IHF World Men's Handball Championship is the 29th event hosted by the International Handball Federation. It is held in Croatia, Denmark and Norway from 14 January to 2 February 2025. This edition marks the first time the world championship is being held in three countries.
