Cwmbran is a town in the county borough of Torfaen in South Wales.
Torfaen is a principal area with county borough status in the south-east of Wales. Torfaen is bordered by the county of Monmouthshire to the east, the city of Newport to the south, and the county boroughs of Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent to the south-west and north-west respectively. It is within the historic boundaries of the historic county of Monmouthshire, and between 1974 and 1996 was a district of Gwent, until it was reconstituted as a principal area in 1996.

The Newport Built-up area is an area of land defined by the United Kingdom Office for National Statistics (ONS) for population monitoring purposes. It is an urban conurbation and is not coterminous with the city boundaries. It consists of the urban area centred on Newport as well as contiguous settlements in the eastern and western valleys extending north of the city – including Cwmbran, Pontypool, Risca, Abercarn and Blackwood. It does however exclude physically detached urban areas within the city boundaries, such as Marshfield.

The population of the community in the United Kingdom Census 2001 was 538 and 537 in 2011 and also includes the villages and hamlets of Parkmill, Nicholaston and Lunnon. The name of the village is thought to have originated from Saint Illtud.
Shannonvale or Shannon Vale is a small rural village near Clonakilty in County Cork, Ireland. It lies in the civil parishes of Kilnagross and Templebryan. Evidence of ancient settlement in the area include stone circle, ogham stone and bullaun stone sites in a large ecclesiastical enclosure in the townland of Templebryan North. Shannonvale takes its name from the Earls of Shannon, who owned much of the land in the area and built a large house and mill locally in the mid-18th century. This flour mill was once served by a short spur line from the Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway. The Battle of the Big Cross took place just north of the village during the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
