Horowhenua Chronicle is the regional newspaper for the Horowhenua district, encompassing Foxton, Shannon, and Levin. It is delivered free to every home in the Horowhenua region on Wednesdays and Fridays. It was established in 1893.

Foxton Beach has a permanent population of around 2000 people. The town is a popular holiday destination due mainly to its beach and the bird sanctuary at the Manawatu Estuary. Most of Foxton Beach is made up of holiday homes.

The union was established in 1893 as the Horowhenua Rugby Football Union and was changed to its current name of Horowhenua-Kapiti in 1997, in order to reflect the full extent of the union's districts.
The Heartland XV rugby team is one of several New Zealand national representative rugby union teams, although it is at a lower level than the All Blacks, the second-level Junior All Blacks and the New Zealand Māori. The side is drawn exclusively from players for provincial unions that compete in the Heartland Championship, a nominally amateur domestic competition below the fully professional Mitre 10 Cup.
Ōtaki is a New Zealand Parliamentary electorate, spanning part of the west coast of the lower North Island. The bulk of its population comes from the Horowhenua District, but it also takes in part of the northern Kapiti Coast, including the towns of Otaki and Waikanae, and part of Paraparaumu. The current MP for Ōtaki is Nathan Guy of the National Party. He has held this position since 2008 election.

Puketapu had previously competed for the Miss Universe New Zealand title in 2009 where she was placed first runner-up.
Horowhenua College is a state co-educational secondary school located in Levin, New Zealand. The school has 614 students from Years 9 to 13 as of March 2020. It was opened in 1940, replacing the secondary school department of Levin School. It is the oldest college in the Horowhenua area.
