Dale Inman (born August 19, 1936 in Level Cross, North Carolina) is a retired NASCAR Grand National/Winston Cup Series crew chief from Level Cross, Randolph County, North Carolina. He is best known for being the crew chief of Richard Petty at Petty Enterprises during three decades. [1] They won 188 races [2] and seven championships together (1964, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, and 1979). [3] Inman spent most of his career working for Petty Enterprises. He also was the crew chief for Terry Labonte's 1984 championship with Hagan Racing. [3] NASCAR.com contributor Rick Houston said that if the best crew chief was "settled on statistics and statistics alone, Dale Inman is the greatest crew chief of all time." [1] He is credited for starting the main duties of the position, including preparation, and driver-pit communication. Inman has the most victories as a NASCAR crew chief at 193, 188 of which were with Richard Petty. [4] Inman won five additional races from 1982 to 1984 with Tim Richmond and Terry Labonte.
Inman grew up playing with his second cousins Richard and Maurice Petty. [4] The Petty brothers were the son of Lee Petty, who finished in the Top 5 points in NASCAR's stock car division every year from its formation in 1949 until 1959 and won the 1954, 1958, and 1959 championships. [5] The teenage boys would attend some races and work on Lee's car after school and on weekends. [4] Richard started racing in the late 1950s with Maurice and Inman as part of his pit crew, as they were too young to be his crew chief. [4] In 1960, Petty won his first NASCAR race. By this time, Maurice and Inman had become NASCAR mechanics. Maurice had been the mechanic and crew chief at the races. Petty Enterprises had him start concentrating on engine building for the team, and Inman became the crew chief at the races. [4] Petty described him as the sport's first official crew chief. [6]
In 1967, Petty won a NASCAR-record ten straight races and 27 races during that season with Inman as his crew chief. [1] All 27 victories were in the same car that they built in 1966. [1] He departed the team days after winning the 1981 Daytona 500. [1] While being interviewed after winning the race, he told CBS reporter Ned Jarrett that he would soon be leaving the team. [4] Inman had been crew chief for 188 of Petty's 193 victories up to that point. [7]
He was hired by Rod Osterlund to be the crew chief for 1980 champion Dale Earnhardt. [6] That June, Osterlund sold the team to J. D. Stacy and Earnhardt quit Stacy's team in August. [7] He stayed with the team and was the crew chief for Joe Ruttman and Tim Richmond, winning two races with Richmond in 1982. For 1983 and 1984, he was hired by Billy Hagan to join Terry Labonte's team. [6] They combined to win three races and the 1984 championship. [1]
He returned to Petty Enterprises in 1986 to oversee the business side. [6] In an interview, he said, "This is my homecoming and this is where I belong. Damn, I am happy." [4] He served as Petty’s crew chief for three more seasons (1986–1988) and continued in his role helping Richard Petty until Petty retired in 1992. [6] After his retirement, Inman helped Petty Enterprises drivers Rick Wilson, John Andretti, and Bobby Hamilton. [6]
Inman retired from NASCAR in 1998, having won 193 races and eight championships. [1] He continued as a consultant for Petty Enterprises for a while afterward. [6] Away from racing, Inman has helped the Victory Junction Gang Camp get started. [1] In 2008, he helped unveil the first artifact at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, which was the Plymouth Belvedere that Petty drove to 27 wins in 1967. [8]
In 2006, a national motorsports media group poll named Ray Evernham as the top NASCAR crew chief of all-time and Inman placed a close second even though he had more first place votes than Evernham. [1] When asked, Inman said, "I'm not even sure I should be ranked. I think I was second [in the poll], and I'm honored [for] that." [1] He said that the best crew chief that he ever saw was Leonard Wood from the Wood Brothers and Waddell Wilson was also good. [1]
His contributions to racing led to him receiving the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame's first Golden Wrench award on May 25, 2000. [6] In 2008, he was received the Smokey Yunick Award. [2]
On June 14, 2011, he was selected to the 2012 class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
As of 2000, Inman was married to his wife Mary for over 40 years. They had two children, Tina Dale Hussey and Jeffrey Inman, and four grandchildren, Taylor and Logan Hussey, and Peyton and Addison Inman. [6]
Richard Lee Petty, nicknamed "the King", is an American former stock car racing driver who competed from 1958 to 1992 in the former NASCAR Grand National and Winston Cup Series, most notably driving the No. 43 Plymouth/Pontiac for Petty Enterprises. He is one of the members of the Petty racing family. He was the first driver to win the Cup Series championship seven times, while also winning a record 200 races during his career. This included winning the Daytona 500 a record seven times and winning a record 27 races in one season (1967).
Robert Allen Labonte is an American semi-retired professional stock car racing driver and current analyst for NASCAR on Fox. He also currently competes part-time in the SMART Modified Tour, driving the No. 18L for Hermie Sadler and Bill Stanley. Labonte is the 2000 NASCAR Cup Series champion. He and his older brother, Terry Labonte, are one of only two pairs of brothers to have both won the Cup championships. He is also the uncle of former Xfinity Series race winner Justin Labonte.
Terrance Lee Labonte, nicknamed "Texas Terry" or "the Iceman", is an American former stock car driver. He raced from 1978 to 2014 in the former NASCAR Winston Cup and Sprint Cup Series. A two-time Cup Series champion in 1984 and 1996 and the 1989 IROC champion, he is the older brother of 2000 Cup Series champion Bobby Labonte, and the father of former Nationwide Series driver Justin Labonte. He also co-owns a Chevrolet dealership in Greensboro, North Carolina with Rick Hendrick. He appeared on the CBS series The Dukes of Hazzard in 1984, where he played an unnamed pit crew member.
Raymond Donald Evernham Jr. is an American consultant for Hendrick Companies, formerly an auto racing crew chief for Bill Davis Racing and Hendrick Motorsports, owner of his own team Evernham Motorsports from 2001 to 2010, and analyst for ESPN's NASCAR coverage. A three time Winston Cup Series Champion with driver Jeff Gordon, in 1999, Evernham won the NASCAR Winston Cup Illustrated "Person of the Year". Evernham was inducted to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Class of 2018.
Petty Enterprises was a NASCAR racing team based in Level Cross, North Carolina, USA. It was founded by Lee Petty with his two sons Richard Petty and Maurice Petty. The team was later owned by Richard Petty, his son Kyle Petty and Boston Ventures. At the time of its folding the team operated the No. 43 and No. 45 Dodge Chargers in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Petty Enterprises ran from 1949 until 2008. The team closed shop in January 2009 and merged with Gillett Evernham Motorsports after sponsorship could not be found for any of the cars in the Petty stable; the merged team took the name Richard Petty Motorsports, adopting a logo similar to that of Petty Enterprises' logo. In 2021, Richard Petty Motorsports became Petty GMS Motorsports, and in 2023 the team rebranded as Legacy Motor Club.
Donald Robert Loomis is a former NASCAR crew chief who worked for Petty Enterprises and Hendrick Motorsports during his time as a crew chief, working most notably with Richard Petty and Jeff Gordon. Loomis won the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship as Gordon's crew chief, and collected a total of 26 wins and 98 top 5s.
Billy Joe Hagan was a NASCAR owner/driver. He owned Hagan Racing and was known for winning the 1984 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship with Terry Labonte.

Parrott is an American stock car racing crew chief who works for Fast Track Racing as the crew chief of their No. 11 car driven by Zachary Tinkle full-time in the ARCA Menards Series East and part-time in the ARCA Menards Series. He is most well-known for his long tenure as a NASCAR Cup Series crew chief at Robert Yates Racing crew chiefing Dale Jarrett's No. 88 Ford. The duo won 27 races together as well as the 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship.

The NASCAR Pit Crew Challenge is an event held by NASCAR during All-Star race weekend. The event was an exhibition pit stop contest featuring the top teams from the Sprint Cup Series. The event was cancelled for 2013 due to lack of sponsorship. The event is due to be revived during the 2023 NASCAR All-Star Race weekend.
