Early life
Belliard was born on 29 May 1978 in La Teste-de-Buch [3] and was raised in Augicourt,near Vesoul,in rural France,in a working-class family. His father was a bricklayer and his mother a cleaning woman. To this day,Belliard refers to himself as a "son of proletarians". [4] He wrote a book about his mother,her illness,and his devastation after she died in 2020. [5]
After studying in Nancy,he attended EdHEC,a business School in Lille,borrowing money and working to finance his studies.
After a first experience as a consultant,which he describes as "inconclusive",he moved to Paris in 2000 to work as a journalist for Alternatives économiques , [6] a post he has continued part-time since being elected to the City Council during the 2014 municipal election. [7]
Politics
David Belliard joined the Green Party in 2002 and has been an active member since. He played a role in the 2009 campaign for the European Parliament and in the transformation of the "Greens" to "Europe Ecology-The Greens". [9] He was elected to the Council of Paris as a Councillor for the 11th arrondissement of Paris in the 2014 election. [10] He has served as a metropolitan advisor for the Metropole du Grand Paris since its creation in December 2015.
In March 2019,Belliard put forward his candidacy for mayor as the Green Party candidate in the 2020 municipal elections. [11] He won the nomination on 1 June 2019 [12] with 49.61% of the party vote, [13] placing ahead of the other candidate,Julien Bayou. [14]
On 11 February 2020,Belliard said that while he condemned violence against individuals and property,it was important to understand the root causes behind the invasion of BlackRock's headquarters by ecological activists in Paris. [15]
After the first round of the Paris municipal election,Belliard and Europe Ecology-The Greens negotiated a common political program and hybrid electoral list with Paris En Commun,resulting in an alliance for the second round of the election. [16] At the city level,this coalition won the election with 48.70% of all votes. [17]
As of 3 July 2020,Belliard serves as a member of the executive team to the Mayor of Paris,Anne Hidalgo,responsible for the transformation of public spaces,as well as transportation,mobility,rules and regulations on city streets,and the management of roads. [18]
Yannick Jadot is a French environmental activist and politician who ran for President of France in 2022, placing sixth with 4.6% of the vote. A member of The Ecologists (LÉ), he was elected to represent Paris in the Senate in 2023.
The Ecologists, formerly known as Europe Ecology – The Greens is a centre-left to left-wing green political party in France. The party is a member of the European Green Party. The party was formed on 13 November 2010 from the merger of The Greens and Europe Ecology.
Éric Piolle is a French politician of Europe Ecology – The Greens (EELV) who has been serving as mayor of Grenoble since 2014. . He was Regional Councillor of Rhône-Alpes from March 2010 to April 2014.
Nathalie Appéré is a French politician who has served as the president of Rennes Métropole since 2020 and the mayor of Rennes since 2014. She is a member of the Socialist Party (PS).
Legislative elections were held in France on 11 and 18 June 2017 to elect the 577 members of the 15th National Assembly of the Fifth Republic. They followed the two-round presidential election won by Emmanuel Macron. The centrist party he founded in 2016, La République En Marche! (LREM), led an alliance with the centrist Democratic Movement (MoDem); together, the two parties won 350 of the 577 seats—a substantial majority—in the National Assembly, including an outright majority of 308 seats for LREM. The Socialist Party (PS) was reduced to 30 seats and the Republicans (LR) reduced to 112 seats, and both parties' allies also suffered from a marked drop in support; these were the lowest-ever scores for the centre-left and centre-right in the legislative elections. The movement founded by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, la France Insoumise (FI), secured 17 seats, enough for a group in the National Assembly. Among other major parties, the French Communist Party (PCF) secured ten and the National Front (FN) obtained eight seats. Both rounds of the legislative election were marked by record low turnout.
La France Insoumise is a left-wing populist political party in France, launched in 2016 by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, then a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and former co-president of the Left Party (PG). It aims to implement the eco-socialist and democratic socialist programme L'Avenir en commun.
Esther Benbassa is a French-Turkish-Israeli historian and politician. She specializes in the history of Jews and other minorities. Since 2011, Benbassa has served as a French senator, representing Paris from 2017 onwards and Val-de-Marne from 2011 to 2017.
Presidential elections were held in France on 10 and 24 April 2022. As no candidate won a majority in the first round, a runoff was held, in which Emmanuel Macron defeated Marine Le Pen and was re-elected as President of France. Macron, from La République En Marche! (LREM), had defeated Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, once already in the 2017 French presidential election, for the term which expired on 13 May 2022. Macron became the first president of France to win a re-election bid since Jacques Chirac won in 2002.

From 2017 until 2021, he also served as a member of the National Assembly, representing the 5th constituency of Paris, which encompasses the 3rd and 10th arrondissements.

European Parliament elections were held in France on 26 May 2019, electing members of the 9th French delegation to the European Parliament as part of the elections held across the European Union. The election featured two major changes since the 2014 election: the return to a single national constituency and the increase in the number of French seats from 74 to 79 upon the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. Officially, 79 MEPs were considered to have been elected, including five "virtual" MEPs who did not take their seats until the UK formally left the EU. The election featured 34 separate electoral lists, a record number at the national level.
Julien Bayou is a French activist, lawyer and politician who has represented the 5th constituency of Paris in the National Assembly since 2022. A member of the Europe Ecology – The Greens (EELV) party, he served as its national secretary from 2019 until his resignation in 2022.
The 2020 Paris Municipal election was a municipal election that took place in Paris on 15 March 2020, alongside other French municipal elections. The second round, which was originally scheduled to be held on 22 March 2020, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in France. The second round then took place on 28 June 2020, which saw Anne Hidalgo re-elected as Mayor of Paris.
Pierre-Yves Bournazel is a French politician who represented the 18th constituency of Paris in the National Assembly from 2017 to 2022. He has been a member of Horizons since 2021, which he joined after leaving The Republicans (LR) in 2017. Bournazel has also held a seat on the Council of Paris since 2008.
Jeanne Barseghian is a French politician who is the mayor of Strasbourg and has been a member of its city council. She has been a member of Europe Ecology – The Greens (EELV) since 2013. She was elected in 2014 to the City Council of Strasbourg, and to the Eurométropole de Strasbourg Council. She was elected mayor of Strasbourg after she successfully led the EELV list in the 2020 municipal election there.

The New Ecological and Social People's Union is a left-wing electoral alliance of political parties in France. Formed on May Day 2022, the alliance includes La France Insoumise (LFI), the Socialist Party (PS), the French Communist Party (PCF), Europe Ecology – The Greens (EELV), Ensemble! (E!), and Génération.s (G.s), and their respective smaller partners. It was the first wide left-wing political alliance since the Plural Left in the 1997 French legislative election. Over 70 dissident candidates who refused the accord still ran.
The Ecologists is a French green political coalition launched in August 2020. This alliance follows the 2020 municipal elections, in which several large cities were won by lists led by green candidates.
