William Henry Cosby Jr. is an American former comedian,actor,spokesman,and media personality. He performed over a period of decades in film,television,and stand-up comedy,with his longest-running live-action role being that of Cliff Huxtable in the sitcom The Cosby Show (1984-1992). He also released several stand-up comedy albums and was a popular spokesperson in advertising for decades. Cosby was well known in the United States for his eccentric image and gained a reputation as "America's Dad". Since 2014,dozens of allegations of sexual assault have been made against him,which has effectively ended his career and tarnished his legacy. There had been previous allegations against Cosby,but they were dismissed and accusers were ignored or disbelieved.

It was later revealed that the amount paid to Constand was $3.38 million. The case was filed by Andrea Constand,a former college and Canadian national team basketball player,against comedian and entertainer Bill Cosby,concerning a sexual assault that occurred in Cosby's home in January 2004 while Constand was working for Temple University women's basketball team in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. At that time,no criminal charges were filed.

In December 2015,three Class II felony charges of aggravated indecent assault were filed against American media personality Bill Cosby in Montgomery County,Pennsylvania,based on allegations by Andrea Constand concerning incidents in January 2004. Cosby's first trial in June 2017 ended in a mistrial. Cosby was found guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault at retrial on April 26,2018 and on September 25,2018,he was sentenced to three to ten years in state prison and fined $25,000 plus the cost of the prosecution,$43,611.
