Death metal, a form of heavy metal music. Along with the main genre of Indonesian heavy metal, death metal is extensively popular in the country of Indonesia and maintains a vast regional scene since the early 90s. Prominent bands include Jasad, Burgerkill, Asphyxiate and Purgatory. [1]
Due to sheer distance from the geographical origins of death metal in Europe and North America, Indonesia is not typically considered to be a major segment of the worldwide death metal scene. [1] However, some Indonesian bands, such as Noxa, have played at major global extreme music festivals, including Obscene Extreme. [2] The relative isolation of the scene, and comments made by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, in which he listed the grindcore/death metal band Napalm Death amongst his favourite bands, has aroused significant global media interest in the scene. [3]
Indonesia is an archipelagic country of approximately 18,000 islands stretching along the equator in South East Asia. The area of Indonesia is populated by peoples of various migrations, creating a diversity of cultures, ethnicities, and languages. [4] An attempted coup in 1965 led to a violent army-led anti-communist purge in which over half a million people were killed. General Suharto politically outmaneuvered President Sukarno, and became president in March 1968. In the aftermath of Suharto's rise, under the New Order regime, hundreds of thousands of people were killed or imprisoned by the military and religious groups in a backlash against alleged communist supporters, with direct support from the United States. [5] [6]
In the late 1990s, however, Indonesia was the country hardest hit by the East Asian Financial Crisis, [7] resulting in political and economic instability, social unrest, corruption, and terrorism. The crisis eroded domestic confidence with the New Order and led to popular protests. The Reformasi era following Suharto's resignation, led to a strengthening of democratic processes, including a regional autonomy program, [8] the secession of East Timor, and the first direct presidential election in 2004.
The process of Reformasi also resulted in a higher degree of freedom of speech, in contrast to the pervasive censorship under the New Order. This has led to a more open political debate in the news media and increased expression in the arts, especially within Indonesian musical spheres. [1] Concurrent with the increasing cultural liberalisation, Indonesians began to consume a greater variety of media, including early bootlegs of grindcore recordings. [9]
Due to the widespread proliferation of death metal and other western music styles into Indonesia via tape trading throughout the 1980s and 1990s, there is no definitive date to determine when a death metal fandom in the country developed. [1] Vocalist of early Indonesian stoner metal act Seringai, Arian 13 told Vice in 2017 that the 1990 Napalm Death album Harmony Corruption was one of the "first nationally available death metal/grind albums", possessing an "obviously huge" impact upon the development of the scene. [9] A number of prominent death metal acts were formed throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, with Jasad being formed in 1990, Funeral Inception in 2000, and Noxa in 2002. [1]
Napalm Death directly inspired a number of Indonesian musicians, with the brutal death metal band Jasad especially citing Napalm Death as an influence on their early sound, [9] and the vocalist of Tengkorak recalling that he learned how to scream by listening to the vocal patterns of Barney Greenway. [9] Arif "Gobel" Budiman, of Rottenomicon, also told Vice that his band probably wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Harmony Corruption. [9] Vice also noted Napalm Death's 2005 concert in Ancol, North Jakarta, as the event that "cemented Indonesia's place as a must-stop country on the extreme music world tour circuit". The foundation of the death metal scene in East Bandung, according to Forgotten vocalist Addy Gembel, occurred concurrently with the ongoing industralisation of a previously semi-rural farming community, reflective of the anxieties generated by such historical development. [1]
Indonesian death metal has even aroused interest from labels in regions where the genre is more popular, with Dutch D.I.Y label Extreme Terror Production releasing a compilation featuring exclusively Indonesian bands entitled Grindonesia. [10]
The Indonesian metal scene as a whole is largely characterised by the centrality of the values of respect, politeness, tolerance, and patience within Indonesian culture, in addition to a general unwillingness to criticise others. [11] This is in direct contrast to the confrontational, and often provocative themes present in the death metal of Europe and the US. [12] [13] As James notes, a majority of the scenes members are broadly socially conservative and respectful members of a pluralistic and diverse, but hierarchical society. [1] [11] Indonesian metal musicians usually separate their own personal religious beliefs from their music, although there are exceptions to this. [14] However, underground bands are bold and they are open to criticizing the politics of Indonesia. [15]
The One Finger Movement was a collective of pro-islamic and anti-zionist bands, fans and venues based around Jakarta, originating in the early 2000s. Wallach identified that it primarily aimed to 'spiritually nourish and encourage' religious people who already have an active interest in metal music. Whilst based in Jakarta, it also possessed some influence in East Java and Sumatra. [14] In a 2011 interview, Jason Hutagalung, an Australian-based Indonesian music promoter and tattoo artist, estimated that the One Finger Movement comprised about 20% of the Jakarta scene at its peak. [1] The movement was named after the one finger sign (meaning 'one god') used by its proponents and supporters in place of the generally accepted worldwide devil's horns symbol, which they viewed as unacceptable. [16] This one finger sign involves partakers touching each other's extended forefingers tip-to-tip. Not just limited to grindcore, bands of the One Finger Movement also include Purgatory and Tengkorak. [1]
Grindcore is an extreme fusion genre of heavy metal and hardcore punk that originated in the mid-1980s, drawing inspiration from abrasive-sounding musical styles, such as thrashcore, crust punk, hardcore punk, extreme metal, and industrial. Grindcore is considered a more noise-filled style of hardcore punk while using hardcore's trademark characteristics such as heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, grinding overdriven bass, high-speed tempo, blast beats, and vocals which consist of growls, shouts and high-pitched shrieks. Early groups like Napalm Death are credited with laying the groundwork for the style. It is most prevalent today in North America and Europe, with popular contributors such as Brutal Truth and Nasum. Lyrical themes range from a primary focus on social and political concerns, to gory subject matter and black humor.
A blast beat is a type of drum beat that originated in hardcore punk and grindcore, and is often associated with certain styles of extreme metal, namely black metal and death metal, and occasionally in metalcore. In Adam MacGregor's definition, "the blast-beat generally comprises a repeated, sixteenth-note figure played at a very fast tempo, and divided uniformly among the bass drum, snare, and ride, crash, or hi-hat cymbal." Blast beats have been described by PopMatters contributor Whitney Strub as, "maniacal percussive explosions, less about rhythm per se than sheer sonic violence".

Napalm Death are an English grindcore band formed in Meriden, West Midlands in 1981. None of the band's original members have been in the group since 1986, but since Utopia Banished (1992), the lineup of bassist Shane Embury, guitarist Mitch Harris, drummer Danny Herrera and lead vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway has remained consistent through most of the band's career. From 1989 to 2004, Napalm Death were a five-piece band after they added Jesse Pintado and Mitch Harris as replacements for guitarist Bill Steer. Following Pintado's departure, the band reverted to a four-piece.
Swedish death metal is a death metal music scene developed in Sweden. Many Swedish death metal bands are associated with the melodic death metal movement, thus giving Swedish death metal a different sound from other variations of death metal. Unlike American death metal groups, the first Swedish bands were rooted in hardcore punk. Gothenburg has a large melodic death metal scene while Stockholm is known for its more raw death metal scene.
Scum is the debut studio album by English grindcore band Napalm Death, released on 1 July 1987 by Earache Records. The two sides of the record were recorded by two different lineups in sessions separated by about a year; the only musician in both incarnations was drummer Mick Harris. The two sides are very different, and the two taken together serve to bridge stylistic elements of heavy metal and punk rock. While the songs on the A-side are influenced heavily by hardcore punk and anarcho-punk, the vocals and lower-tuned electric guitars on the B-side anticipate subsequent developments in extreme metal. Loudwire put it in the list of the best 10 metal albums of 1987.
Thrashcore is a fast-tempo subgenre of hardcore punk that emerged in the early 1980s. Thrashcore is essentially sped-up hardcore, adopting a slightly more extreme style by means of its vocals, dissonance, and occasional use of blast beats. Songs are usually very brief, and thrashcore is in many ways a less dissonant, minimally metallic forerunner of grindcore. The genre is sometimes associated with the skateboarder subculture.
Harmony Corruption is the third studio album by British grindcore band Napalm Death, released in 1990 on Earache Records.
Muhammad Amien Rais is an Indonesian politician. He was one of the leaders of the reform movement that forced the resignation of President Suharto in 1998. Amien Rais was the leader of Muhammadiyah, one of the two biggest Muslim organizations in Indonesia, from 1995 to 2000. He was the Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) from 1999 to 2004. During his chairmanship, the MPR passed a series of amendments to the Constitution of Indonesia. These amendments, among other things, established direct presidential elections, a presidential term limit, and the Constitutional Court.
Extreme Noise Terror are a British extreme metal band formed in Ipswich, England in 1985 and one of the earliest and most influential crust bands. Noted for one of the earliest uses of dual vocalists in hardcore, and for recording a number of sessions for BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, the band started as crust punks and helped characterise the early, archetypal grindcore sound with highly political lyrics, fast guitars and tempos, and often very short songs.
Earache Records is a British independent record label, music publisher and management company founded by Digby Pearson in 1985, based in Nottingham, England, with offices in London and New York. The label helped to pioneer extreme metal by releasing early grindcore and death metal records between the late 1980s and mid-1990s. Its roster has since diversified into more mainstream guitar music, working with bands such as Rival Sons, the Temperance Movement, Blackberry Smoke, Scarlet Rebels and the White Buffalo. The company also hosted the 'Earache Express' stage at Glastonbury Festival in 2017 and 'The Earache Factory' at Boomtown 2018. The label's logo is a homage to Thrasher magazine, as Pearson was a skateboard culture enthusiast.
Suharto resigned as President of Indonesia on 21 May 1998 following the collapse of support for his 32-year long presidency. Vice President B. J. Habibie took over the presidency.
Michael John Harris is an English musician from Birmingham. He was the drummer for Napalm Death between 1985 and 1991, and is credited for coining the term "grindcore". After Napalm Death, Harris joined Painkiller with John Zorn and Bill Laswell. Since the mid-1990s, Harris has worked primarily in electronic and ambient music, his main projects being Scorn and Lull. He has also collaborated with musicians including James Plotkin and Extreme Noise Terror. According to AllMusic, Harris's "genre-spanning activities have done much to jar the minds, expectations, and record collections of audiences previously kept aggressively opposed."
"You Suffer" is a song by English grindcore band Napalm Death, released on the band's debut studio album, Scum (1987). The song is precisely 1.316 seconds long. The song was written by Nicholas Bullen, Justin Broadrick and Mick Harris during the March 1986 demo sessions for From Enslavement to Obliteration.
Burgerkill is an Indonesian heavy metal band, originally from Bandung, capital city of West Java. The band is named after the fast food restaurant Burger King as a prank. The band was founded in May 1995 by Aris Tanto a.k.a. Eben, sometimes called 'Ebenz', a young man from Jakarta, who came to Bandung to continue his study. In Bandung, Ebenz met Ivan Scumbag, Kimung and Dadan. This four personnel became the first line-up of Burgerkill. In 2013, the band won Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards for Metal as F*ck category.
Purgatory is an Indonesian metal band from Jakarta, formed in 1991. The band started out originally as a death metal group heavily influenced by Obituary, but switched to a nu metal sound reminiscent of bands like Nothingface and Mudvayne by the time they began writing the second album. Purgatory also began wearing outfits and masks around this time.
The Painful Experience is the third full-length studio album by Indonesian extreme metal band Kekal. It marks the transition of Kekal from straightforward melodic black metal to a more distinct progressive metal style, while still retaining the intensity and speed. The title refers to the recording sessions for Embrace the Dead. Guitarist Leo Setiawan left the band before the recording sessions began and moved to Melbourne, Australia, but he was still listed on the album credits as a guitarist due to his contribution to the album's songwriting and general concept. The album was released by four independent labels: Fear Dark in the Netherlands for the European market, Clenchedfist Records in the United States for the North American market, Indonesian label THT Productions for the Southeast Asian market, and HROM/HIRAX for Eastern European market.
Noxa is an Indonesian grindcore band formed in Jakarta in 2002 by drummer Robin Hutagaol and guitarist Ade Himernio Adnis. The band are known for playing grindcore accompanied by political and humanistic lyrics.
South African heavy metal has its roots in South African hard rock and heavy metal bands in the 1980s. Through the late 1980s and the early 1990s South Africa grew a well supported metal scene. Particular scenes developed in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria. South African heavy metal has been particularly influenced by foreign bands, particularly the New Wave of American heavy metal and American thrash metal.
Indonesian horror are the films of the horror genre produced by the Indonesian film industry. Often inspired by local folklore and religious elements, Indonesian horror films have been produced in the country since the 1960s. After a hiatus during the Suharto era in the 1990s, when censorship affected production, Indonesian horror films continued being produced following Reformasi in 1998.
Indonesian heavy metal or Indonesian metal music are music with the heavy metal genre that developed and emerged from local Indonesian metal bands. In history, the rise of metal music in Indonesia was influenced by the popularity of Indonesian rock music. Several sub-genres of heavy metal in Indonesia are also quite popular, such as thrash metal, death metal, power metal, progressive metal and gothic metal which are often performed by local metal bands in Indonesia.
