Etymology

The word kalikal means a variegated pattern in Koryak, one of the indigenous languages of Kamchatka. [1]

Distribution

This species was described from five specimens collected at 14–16 m depth at Starichkov Island, Avachinsky Bay, Kamchatka, northwest Pacific Ocean, 52°46′42″N158°37′02″E / 52.77843°N 158.61726°E / 52.77843; 158.61726 and other specimens from slightly deeper water as well as one from 60 m depth in the Bering Strait. [1]

Description

Dendronotus kalikal has a patterned body which is similar to Dendronotus frondosus , Dendronotus kamchaticus and Dendronotus venustus . It is distinguished from these species by details of the colour pattern, the branching of the dorsal appendages (cerata), the radula and molecular characters. [1]

Nudibranch

Nudibranchs are a group of soft-bodied, marine gastropod molluscs which shed their shells after their larval stage. They are noted for their often extraordinary colours and striking forms, and they have been given colourful nicknames to match, such as "clown," "marigold," "splendid," "dancer," "dragon," or "sea rabbit." Currently, about 3,000 valid species of nudibranchs are known.
