Background

A mass depopulation of cockroaches has been observed since the beginning of the 21st century in Russia and other countries of the former USSR. Observers[ who? ] have noted a rapid disappearance of various types of cockroaches from cities and towns in Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus.[ citation needed ] However, no such depopulation has been observed in larger Russian megalopolises such as Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Nizhny Novgorod. [1]

Scientists from Chelyabinsk and Yekaterinburg have suggested that the Oriental cockroach should be added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. [2] [3]

Suggested explanations

The depopulation of cockroaches may be exaggerated, or this phenomenon may be temporary or cyclic. [1] [4] A number of explanations of the phenomenon are discussed in the media, of varying degree of credibility.

A series of Molotov cocktail arson attacks and shootings took place in military commissariat registration and enlistment offices since the start of the country's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Other governmental buildings were also attacked in multiple regions of Russia. Principally part of the Russian partisan and anti-war movements, they were spurred by several factors, including the outbreak of the invasion of Ukraine, the participation of Russian conscripts in hostilities, the start of spring conscription, and rumors about possible mobilization in the country, which were later found to be true. Commissariat offices recruit servicemen to the Russian army and choose who is eligible and ineligible for service. The attacks were not a single coordinated campaign: behind them were a variety of people: from left-wing anarchists, far-right groups, and assorted lone wolf actors. The second wave of arsons took place after the announcement of partial mobilization in Russia.
