Documenta is an exhibition of contemporary art which takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany.
Harald Szeemann was a Swiss curator, artist, and art historian. Having curated more than 200 exhibitions, many of which have been characterized as groundbreaking, Szeemann is said to have helped redefine the role of an art curator. It is believed that Szeemann elevated curating to a legitimate art form itself.
Christoph Maria Schlingensief was a German theatre director, performance artist, and filmmaker. Starting as an independent underground filmmaker, Schlingensief later staged productions for theatres and festivals, often accompanied by public controversies. In the final years before his death, he staged Wagner's Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival and worked at several opera houses, establishing himself as a Regietheater artist.

Skulptur Projekte Münster is an exhibition of sculptures in public places in the city of Münster (Germany). Held every ten years since 1977, the exhibition shows works of invited international artists for free in different locations all over town, thereby confronting art with public places. The Museum für Moderne Kunst, or short MMK, in Frankfurt, was founded in 1981 and opened to the public 6 June 1991. The museum was designed by the Viennese architect Hans Hollein. It is part of Frankfurt's Museumsufer . Because of its triangular shape, the MMK is popularly called the Tortenstück. Since 2018, Susanne Pfeffer has been director of the MMK.

Documenta 13 was the thirteenth edition of the German contemporary art exhibition Documenta. It took place between 9 June until 16 September 2012 in Kassel, Germany. The exhibition was held under the theme "collapse and recovery". Exhibits could be seen in several venues in the city, among others in the Fridericianum museum, in the Orangerie and in the Karlsaue, a large urban park.

Adam Szymczyk, is a Polish art critic, curator, writer and editor. He lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland. Between 2003–2014, he was the director and chief curator at Kunsthalle Basel. Between 2013 and 2017, he was the artistic director at documenta 14. He is curator at large at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. In 2016, he was ranked second on the list of the most influential people in the contemporary art world compiled by the ArtReview magazine.
