Dogs On Acid, also known as DOA, is a UK-based drum and bass and electronic music website, established in 2001. [1]
Dogs On Acid began life as a community on Bad Company's website, bcrecordings.com, back in 2000. [2]
On 27 April 2010, the website reached 10 million posts from the forums, with almost 9 million posts on The Board and over a million on The Grid. [3] [4]
On 23 September 2013, the forum was taken offline and, in January 2014, the site was relaunched under new ownership, with updated design and servers. [5]
The domain was sold to a new owner "Vexus". [5] On 10 January 2014, a placeholder page appeared on the original domain, stating that the site would be "Renamed. Rebranded. Relaunched". [6] The Facebook account repeated the message on the website, [7] whereas the Twitter account had the message "RIP DOA". [8] However, in late January, the site was relaunched under the name "Mixspace", sporting a new design, but keeping the existing forums and database. Due to the Dogs On Acid branding being more popular, the site soon reverted to its original name. [5]
Next to a community which holds over 87,000 members, the website features: an Editorial section, stores selling merchandise and - in cooperation with Track It Down - online music downloads, an image gallery, an online radio and an audio section, showcasing the latest tracks from the scene. The Grid, the website's music production section, is the birthplace of many new D&B talent. Noisia, Pendulum, Alix Perez, Danny Byrd and Data to name a few, were regular contributors before gaining any mainstream popularity. Next to this, most D&B artists and promoters are or were regular contributors to the community. Dogs On Acid also runs various music labels: Breakbeat Kaos, Dogs On Acid [9] and Under Construction and promotes and organises various parties worldwide. [10]
The Grid (Production side) holds monthly Q&A Sessions where posters and members ask questions to notable producers and artists. Members of the grid also collaborate to their 'Grid wiki'. [11] The board holds more ambiguous discussions than in its early days. Mary Anne Hobbs announced during an interview "Everything happens on-line. The forums and the bloggers are running things - dubstepforum.com and dogsonacid.com are phenomenal". [12] [13]
Dogs On Acid's arch-rivals are Drum & Bass Arena. A relationship between both forums that is light-hearted, where both production sub-forums have competitions for best track and mixes; bringing the comprehensive community together. [14] [15]
The drum and bass group Pendulum started much of their activity on DOA, before and during their time being signed to Breakbeat Kaos (BBK), posting on the board and helping other producers on production forum the 'Grid'. During this time DOA was to become the first board to get hit with any news of their releases, also causing the group to be hit with many questions on the production side. Following the success of Pendulum's Slam and Hold Your Colour , Fresh decided to release a compilation CD entitled Jungle Sound Gold Edition. Pendulum responded to the thread stating they had no idea about the release nor gave any permission. Rob Swire responded by admitting no knowledge of the album's release, and that it had nothing to do with the band. Swire also stated they gave Fresh & Adam F low quality tracks to be used for a set and not for releases.
We didn't approve and in fact strongly disapprove of the 'Junglesound Gold' artwork, especially in relation to our name being unfairly used as an advertisement – plainly an attempt to link 'Junglesound Gold' to the recent success of Hold Your Colour.
As a result of the above, we do not endorse 'Junglesound Gold' at all. [16]
– Pendulum
This is one of the few threads that caused uproar within the forum and gained over a thousand replies & 141,000 views in the space of four weeks from Rob's post. [17] News of the scandal spread quickly, even being mentioned on Radio 1's Drum & Bass show only a week later. Fresh was also accused by various members for deviously capitalizing on Pendulum's sudden success. Since the incident, Fresh gave his statement (although by this point the CD was out) and Pendulum left the label. On 18 June 2007, Fresh released Pendulum's last 12" single: Blood Sugar / Axle Grinder along with a special edition ‘Hold Your Colour’ CD. [18]
Although Pendulum (which at that time included Rob Swire, Paul Harding and Gareth McGrillen) felt the forum began to become negative and cut ends with BBK & Fresh, they continued posting on the portal. [19] Once the track "Granite" was released, Pendulum became ridiculed by various members for their change in style and being accused of "selling out" for mainstream success. Although the album was highly successful the band continued to receive heavy sarcasm and accusations for killing the genre from various members, described by the board as "haters". Pendulum responded by saying "if we 'killed drum and bass' last time, this is the final nail in its coffin." As the album continued to do well in the mainstream (including Propane Nightmares peaking at #9 in the UK Singles Chart) the band continued to be criticised by DnB enthusiasts, to the point where in March 2009 the band were booed at the Drum and Bass awards from certain enthusiasts for "selling out" "sounding more rock and having a different style to their preceding album". [20] [21] After receiving a heavy amount of criticism Pendulum decided to respond one more time and left the forum indefinitely. [22]
Adam Fenton is an English record producer and DJ who has worked across various genres. He is also the co-founder of the drum and bass label Breakbeat Kaos along with DJ Fresh. He found initial success with the 1990s drum and bass singles "Circles", "Metropolis" / "Mother Earth", and "F-Jam", before releasing his debut studio album Colours in 1997. In 2001, he transitioned into hip hop music, producing the album Kaos: The Anti-Acoustic Warfare, featuring collaborations with LL Cool J, Redman and De La Soul. He later released a remix album, Drum and Bass Warfare, and collaborated with DJ Fresh.

Breakbeat Kaos is a British independent record label based in London, UK that specialises in drum and bass. It is jointly owned by Fresh and Adam F, who founded the label in 2003 by merging Fresh's Breakbeat Punk with Adam F's Kaos Recordings. The label's first release was a 12" double A-side single by Fresh titled "Dalicks / Temple of Doom". The following year the label released the single "Another Planet / Voyager" by Pendulum, which peaked at number one in the UK Dance Chart. They also produced their first full-length release with the compilation album Jungle Sound: The Bassline Strikes Back!.
Daniel Edward Stein, known professionally as DJ Fresh, is an English DJ and record producer. He is one of the principal members of the drum and bass group Bad Company, alongside Darren White (dBridge), Jason Maldini and Michael Wojcicki (Vegas). Robert Swire-Thompson is an Australian record producer, singer, songwriter, and DJ. He is the founder and vocalist of the drum and bass/electronic rock band Pendulum, as well as DJ and co-founder of electro house duo Knife Party formed of Swire and Gareth McGrillen.

"Hold Your Colour" is a song by Australian drum and bass band Pendulum, released as the fifth single from their debut album Hold Your Colour, and their eighth single overall. It was released as a double A-side by Breakbeat Kaos on 6 March 2006 in the UK. The single features two tracks from the album – a remix of "Hold Your Colour" and "Streamline". The song "Hold Your Colour" features guest guitarist Andrew Goddard and bassist Jon Stockman of Perth band Karnivool. The Bipolar mix of "Hold Your Colour" was featured on the soundtrack of FIFA Street 2. According to Rob Swire, the intro vocal sample in "Hold Your Colour" was taken from a track by Rob, Pendulum member Gareth McGrillen and ShockOne's old band Xygen. The track was titled "Lycaeum". Some lyrics from "Lycaeum" were used in Hold Your Colour.
"Another Planet" / "Voyager" is the second single by Australian drum and bass band Pendulum. It was released on 23 February 2004 by independent label Breakbeat Kaos, and was their first single to use the 12-inch picture disc format. The single peaked at number 46 in the UK Singles Chart, and reached number one in the UK Dance Chart.
"Back 2 You" / "Still Grey" is the third single by Australian drum and bass band Pendulum. It was released on 22 March 2004 by independent label Timeless Recordings, and was their first and only release with the label. The song "Still Grey" featured guest guitarist Evan Short of Concord Dawn, and was included on the CD edition of Hold Your Colour, released in July 2005.
"Tarantula" / "Fasten Your Seatbelt" is the fourth single by Australian drum and bass band Pendulum. It was released on 27 June 2005 by independent label Breakbeat Kaos and was their second release with the label. While "Fasten Your Seatbelt" features production from The Freestylers, "Tarantula" features production from Fresh and vocals from $pyda, together with Tenor Fly from The Freestylers. It peaked number 60 on the UK Singles Chart. Both songs were included on the CD release of Hold Your Colour a month later. "Fasten Your Seatbelt" samples a line from Spider-Man 2 where [] is firing up the fusion reactor for the first time, as well as the sound the reactor made when it was being primed.
"Slam" is a song by Australian drum and bass band Pendulum. It was released on 19 September 2005 by independent label Breakbeat Kaos as a double A-side single with "Out Here", and it was their third release with the label. It peaked number 34 on the UK Singles Chart. Both songs have been included on their CD release of Hold Your Colour in July 2005. "Slam", as well as the "Prelude" track from Hold Your Colour, samples spoken word sections from the Headhunterz song "Rock Civilization". When the song is performed live with the full band, the first minute and a half is cut out and replaced by part of the Metallica song, "Master of Puppets". However, when the song was played in DJ sets prior to 2006, the track "Prelude" was played before it, as "Slam" was always the first track played.
"Blood Sugar" is a song by Australian drum and bass band Pendulum, released as a single on 18 June 2007 in the United Kingdom. It was the band's final single with the Breakbeat Kaos label, and was released on 12-inch vinyl. Both tracks were later added to the 2007 reissue of the group's debut album, Hold Your Colour, due to their popularity. "Axle Grinder" contains samples from the United States TV show, The Twilight Zone and when run through a spectrogram; the song contains an image of Porky Pig giving the middle finger at the very end.
Commix is an English drum and bass project from Cambridge, now solely composed of George Levings.
"Showdown" is the fourth single and first track from the album In Silico by Australian electronic rock band Pendulum. It has been remixed by several artists, including DJ Clipz and Excision. It is also the first single taken from In Silico not to use the album logo prominently on its cover.
Paul Kodish is an English musician and professional drummer, raised in Willesden, London. Kodish has performed with a variety of different artists, including the hip hop act Whodini in 1986, and the drum and bass group Bad Company. He was also one of two drummers for the electronica band Apollo 440 between 1997 and 2005 and the drummer in the Australian-British drum and bass band Pendulum between 2006 and 2009. Kodish spent a short time in 2010 drumming with the Liverpool band Killaflaw, performing at several concerts and drumming for their debut album Sleaze and Grit. He currently supports DJ Fresh's crew on their FRESH/Live tour.
Jungle Sound: The Bassline Strikes Back! is a compilation album, released in 2004 by the British independent record label Breakbeat Kaos, and reissued in 2006 as Jungle Sound: Gold. It featured tracks from artists such as Fresh, Pendulum and Adam F. The album was mixed by Paul Harding from Pendulum, although there was no mention of it in the original artwork.
Immersion is the third studio album by Australian band Pendulum. The album was announced in early 2009, with the name being confirmed in December 2009. The album was released on 21 May 2010 in Australia and Ireland, and on 24 May for the rest of the world, followed by a UK tour of the album. In January 2010, Pendulum hosted the album preview Ear Storm event at Matter in London in which many top DJs performed sets of their own with Pendulum being the headliners.
"Witchcraft" is the second single from Australian drum and bass band Pendulum from their third studio album, Immersion. It was released as a digital single on iTunes on 18 July 2010, with the CD single being released the following day. It debuted at number sixty-two on the UK Singles Chart following high numbers of downloads from the release of the album. The music video was shot on 2 June 2010 and finished on 25 June, as confirmed by Rob Swire's Twitter feed.
