The court of the Qing dynasty (1646–1911) held regular wrestling events, mainly between ethnic Manchu and Mongol wrestlers. Badmaanyambuugiin Bat-Erdene is a Mongolian politician and athlete. Bat-Erdene is widely regarded in Mongolia as one of the most successful, long lasting and celebrated wrestlers, where he won in national non-jacketed wrestling formats as well as winning a gold medal in Sambo jacket wrestling in the 1989 World Sambo Championships in the over 100 kg heavyweight division. He was also Defense Minister of Mongolia from 2016 to July 2017.

Tüvshintöriin Enkhtuyaa is a retired amateur Mongolian freestyle wrestler, who competed in the men's heavyweight category. He finished fourth in the 96-kg division at the 2003 World Wrestling Championships in New York City, New York, United States, and later represented his nation Mongolia at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Tuvshintur also trained for Gobi Wrestling Club in his native Ulaanbaatar, under his personal coach Agvaan Ganbaatar.

Khaltmaagiin Battulga, also referred to as Battulga Khaltmaa, is a Mongolian politician and sambo wrestler who served as the 5th President of Mongolia from 2017 to 2021. He served as Member of the State Great Khural from 2004 to 2016 and Minister of Roads, Transportation, Construction and Urban Development from 2008 to 2012. Before his career in politics, Battulga was a sambo wrestling champion. He was the Democratic Party's candidate in the 2017 presidential election and was elected President with 50.6% in the run-off, the first-ever run-off election in modern Mongolian history. Mongolians are divided about his role in the 2019 Mongolian constitutional crisis. He was elected as a Member of the State Great Khural for the fourth time in the 2024 parliamentary election.
