Douglas Charles Gillespie (born August 13,1958) is an American retired law enforcement officer. He served as the 16th Sheriff of Clark County,Nevada from 2007 to 2015. [1] He is a member of the Republican Party.
On January 20,2010,Gillespie met with Democratic U.S. Senator Harry Reid to talk about funding for law enforcement grants. [2]
Gillespie began his work as a lew enforcement officer in Las Vegas and made an appearance on the show Cops as a K-9 sergeant during the 3rd season.
On February 9,2010,Gillespie responded to the budget woes of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). [3]
On February 13,2013,Gillespie called for gun control legislation. [4]
On April 19,2013,Gillespie announced his re-election bid as Sheriff of Clark County. [5]

On April 12,2014,anti-government activist Cliven Bundy "ordered" Sheriff Gillespie to confront the federal Bureau of Land Management agents,disarm them and deliver their arms to Bundy within an hour of his demand,and later expressed disappointment that Gillespie did not comply. [9] [10]
On July 14,2014,Gillespie announced that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) will no longer hold detainees for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) requests after joining the ICE program in 2008. [11]

The 2014 Las Vegas shootings occurred on June 8,2014,when a married couple,Jerad and Amanda Miller,committed a shooting in northeastern Las Vegas,Nevada. Five people died,including the two shooters. The couple,who espoused extreme anti-government views,first killed two Las Vegas police officers at a restaurant before fleeing into a Walmart,where they killed an intervening armed civilian named Joseph Wilcox. The couple died after engaging responding officers in a shootout in Walmart;police shot and killed Jerad,while Amanda committed suicide after being wounded.

On October 1,2017,a mass shooting occurred when 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire on the crowd attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada from his 32nd-floor suites in the Mandalay Bay hotel. He fired more than 1,000 rounds,killing 60 people and wounding at least 413. The ensuing panic brought the total number of injured to approximately 867. About an hour later,he was found dead in his room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive for the shooting is officially undetermined.

On October 26,2016,Sydney Land and her boyfriend Nehemiah Kauffman were shot and killed in her apartment in Las Vegas,Nevada. Their bodies were found the next day. Initially,Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced that they had no motive and no suspects in the case. Land's mother,Connie Land,asserted that Sydney had possibly been targeted for prostitution grooming by pimps.
