The Dyason's Klip 1 Power Station, (also Dyasons Klip 1 Power Station), is an 86 megawatts solar power plant in South Africa. The power station was developed and is owned and operated by a consortium comprising an international independent power producer (IPP), South African and European investors and a local charitable trust. Commercially commissioned in February 2020, the solar farm's 217 GWh of energy production annually is sold to Eskom, the national electricity utility company, under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). The solar farm is located in the settlement of Dyasons Klip in Dawid Kruiper Municipality (ZF Mgcawu District), Northern Cape Province. Dyasons Klip is located approximately 31 kilometres (19 mi), southwest of Upington, the nearest large town. [3] The geographical coordinates of the Dyasons Klip 1 solar farm are:28°34'15.0"S, 21°03'52.0"E (Latitude:-28.570833; Longitude:21.064444). [4]
The lead developer in Dyasons Klip 1 power plant is the Norwegian IPP, Scatec Solar, which has interests in two other solar farms in the Upington Solar Complex. The other two are (a) Sirius 1 Solar Power Station (86 MW), that was commissioned in February 2020 and (b) the 86 MW Dyason’s Klip 2 Power Station under development. The three solar power plants, with a cumulative generation capacity of 258 MW are part of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPP). [1] [5]
The power station comprises 277,500 modules each rated at 310 Watts, supplied by BYD of China. It also contains 37 Sunny Central 2200 inverters manufactured by SMA Solar Technology of Germany. [2]
The consortium that owns this power station has four shareholders as illustrated in the table below. For descriptive purposes we will call the special purpose vehicle company that owns and operates the solar farm Dyasons Klip 1 Solar Consortium. [1]

In February 2023, Scatec Solar and Norfund, both of Norway divested from the 258 megawatts Upington Solar Complex, comprising Dyasons Klip 1 Solar Power Station, Dyasons Klip 2 Solar Power Station and Sirius 1 Solar Power Station. Their combined 60 percent shareholding in each of these solar farms was purchased by Stanlib Asset Management Proprietary, "an asset manager based in Johannesburg, South Africa". The deal requires South African regulatory approval. [6]
The cost of construction is reported as US$140.75 million. [2]
The Zeerust Solar Power Station is a 75 MW (101,000 hp) solar power plant in South Africa. It is a grid-connected, privately-owned and privately-funded solar power station.
The Dondo Solar Power Station is a planned 40 MW (54,000 hp) solar power plant in Mozambique. The power station is part of a 160 megawatts energy package of four renewable energy power stations under development in the country. They comprise three solar power stations in the districts of Dondo, Lichinga and Chiuta, together with a wind farm in Inhambane Province. Each power station will have maximum generation capacity of 40 MW.
The Golomoti Solar Power Station is a 20 MW (27,000 hp) solar power plant in Malawi. The power station was developed by a consortium comprising InfraCo Africa of the United Kingdom and JCM Power, a Canadian independent power producer. Construction began during the first quarter of 2021. The solar farm came online during the second quarter of 2022.
The Blitta Solar Power Station is an operational 50 MW (67,000 hp) solar power plant in Togo. The power station was developed by Amea Power, an independent power producer (IPP), based in the United Arab Emirates. The solar farm, which is the largest grid-ready in Togo, is also referred to as Mohamed Bin Zayed Power Station, named after His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. The power station began commercial operations in June 2021.
The Metoro Solar Power Station is a 41 megawatts solar power plant in Mozambique. The power station was developed by a consortium comprising Neoen, a French independent power producer (IPP), based in Paris, France and Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), the Mozambican electricity utility company. Construction began in October 2020, with commercial commissioning expected in the fourth quarter of 2021.
The Boikanyo Solar Power Station is a 50 MW (67,000 hp) solar power plant in South Africa. It is a grid-connected, privately owned and privately funded solar power station. The power station, which took about one year to construct, reached "grid code compliance" on 9 April 2021 and provided 450 construction jobs.
The Gourou Banda Solar Power Station is a planned 50 MW (67,000 hp) solar power plant in Niger. This renewable energy infrastructure project will be developed by an independent power producer (IPP), under the build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) model, with support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, as part of the bank's "Scaling Solar" program. The solar farm, first conceived in 2018, as a 20 megawatts installation, was expanded to capacity of 50 megawatts in 2020.
The Exxaro Solar Power Station, also Lephalale Solar Power Station, is a planned 80 MW (110,000 hp) solar power plant in South Africa. The solar farm is under development by Cennergi, a subsidiary of Exxaro Resources Limited, a South African multinational mining group, active in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. The energy generated here will be sold to Exxaro Coal Plc, for use in their coal mine at Grootegeluk, under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), between the two Exxaro subsidiaries. The expected benefits to the group include (a) reduction of the group's carbon footprint (b) financial savings on energy acquisition and utilization and (c) to provide green, secure and sustainable electricity for mine operations at Grootegeluk Coal Mine.
The Nagreongo Solar Power Station, also Nagréongo Solar Power Station, is a 30 MW (40,000 hp) solar power in Burkina Faso. The solar farm, which was commissioned in July 2022, was developed by the French IPP, GreenYellow, a subsidiary of the Casino Group. The energy generated here is sold to the Burkinabe electricity utility company SONABEL,, under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
The Soma Solar Power Station is a planned 150 megawatts solar power plant in Gambia. The two lead developers of this renewable energy infrastructure are the Government of Gambia and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The World Bank and the European Investment Bank, have jointly committed US$164 million in loans towards this development.
The TeraSun Energy Solar Power Station is a planned 81 megawatts solar power plant in Namibia. The power station is owned and is being developed by a consortium comprising Natura Energy, a Namibia-based energy company and Globleq Africa Limited, an independent power producer (IPP), headquartered in the United Kingdom.
Kpalassi Solar Power Station,, is a 42 megawatts (56,000 hp) solar power plant, under development in Togo. The power station is being developed by the government of Togo, through the Agence Togolaise d’Electrification Rurale et des Energies Renouvelables (AT2ER), with loans from the World Bank Group and from the West African Development Bank, under the “Scaling Solar” program.
The Sirius 1 Solar Power Station, is an 86 MW solar power station in South Africa. The power station was developed by a joint venture between Aurora Power Solutions and Sirius Solar PV Project One. The off-taker of the energy generated here is Eskom Holdings, the South African national electricity utility parastatal company. A 20-year power purchase agreement between Eskom and the owners of the power station, governs the purchase and sale of electricity between the two. Commercial commissioning was achieved in February 2020.
The Selebi-Phikwe Solar Power Station,, is a 50 MW (67,000 hp) solar power plant under development in Botswana. It is owned and is being developed by Scatec, the multinational energy conglomerate, whose headquarters are located in Oslo, Norway. The off-taker is Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
The Maun Concentrated Solar Power Station, is a planned 100 MW (130,000 hp) concentrated solar power station in Botswana. The solar power complex would be owned and operated by an independent power producer, whose identity will be revealed when the ongoing open bidding is concluded. Bids were received until June 2022. The power off-taker is Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), who will purchase the power for integration into the national grid, under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). This power station is being simultaneously developed, together with the 100 MW Letlhakane Concentrated Solar Power Station.
The Letlhakane Concentrated Solar Power Station, is a planned 100 MW (130,000 hp) concentrated solar power station in Botswana. The owner, developer and operator of this solar power complex will be an independent power producer, whose identity will be revealed when the ongoing open bidding is concluded. Bids were received until June 2022. The power generated here is expected to be bought by Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), who will integrate it into the national grid, under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). This power station is being simultaneously developed, together with the 100 MW Maun Concentrated Solar Power Station.
The Bolobedu Solar Power Station is an 148 MW solar power plant planned in South Africa. The solar farm is owned and under development by a consortium led by Voltalia, the French multinational independent power producer (IPP) and Black South African shareholders, including a community trust. The off-taker of the power generated here is Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), a South African mining company owned by the Anglo-Australian mining conglomerate, Rio Tinto. The power will be conveyed from the solar farm to the customer's mine using the transmission lines of Eskom, the national electricity parastatal company, as is permissible under South African law.
The Sedibeng Solar Power Station is an 6.5 MW solar power plant in South Africa. The solar farm is owned by South African independent power producer (IPP), Sola Group, headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa. The off-taker of the power generated here is Heineken South Africa, a subsidiary of Heineken N.V., the Dutch beverage conglomerate. The power is used to power manufacturing processes in the Sedibeng Heineken Brewery. A 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA), governs the sale and purchase of electricity between the parties.
