Eastern Michigan University College of Business is one of the colleges at Eastern Michigan University. [2] EMU's College of Business is housed in the Gary M. Owen building in downtown Ypsilanti, which has been its site since 1991. Students are able to take a shuttle to the College of Business, which runs in a 20-minute loop around campus.

History

Though the College of Business was established in 1964 the school has had over a 100-year history at EMU. In 1911, the board authorized the Michigan State Normal School a Business Education Degree. This was the first degree offered related to business. Then 18 years later the school offers Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. In 1949, Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees approved by the State Board. Then on April 6, 1964 the board of regents authorized formation of the College of Business. The school was formed with 21 full-time faculty and student enrollment of 853. [3] During this time, five departments formed: Accounting and Finance, Management, Marketing, General Business and Business Education. Business education was eventually moved to the college of technology. EMU grants the first five MBA degrees in 1964. The COB has been housed in Ford Hall (1966), Pray-Harrold (1969) and its current location Owen Building (1991).WWJ-AM and WXYZ-TV both feature the COB on various business and entrepreneurship segments. The Gary M. Owen Building was constructed in 1988 and is named after Gary M. Owen, former Michigan Speaker of the House. [3] The building's architectural style is based on Michigan Modern and it occupies approximately 122,000 square feet. The Gary M. Owen Building is not located on the main campus but in downtown Ypsilanti. Students access this facility by walking, by bus from the main campus (The Ride), or can drive and park at the facility. In 2007, the COB started the first Ethos week in the nation. [6] EMU’s College of Business has been seen as a success in attracting international students. In 2010, 35 percent of those in its master’s program were international students. [7]

Accreditation and ground-breaking programs

Departments

The College of Business (COB) is divided between four academic departments, these departments are Accounting and Finance, Computer Information Systems, Management, and Marketing. The Accounting and Finance department has developed graduate programs in Accounting, Taxation, and Finance (beginning Fall 2019). The upcoming MSF is the College's first STEM-designated program. The program includes access to Bloomberg terminals, financial databases, and other experiential learning opportunities.

Eastern Michigan University, is a public research university in Ypsilanti, Michigan, United States. The university was founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School. Today, the university is governed by an eight-member board of regents whose members are appointed by the governor of Michigan for eight-year terms. The school belongs to the Mid-American Conference and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The Monte Ahuja College of Business is the business school at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. With more than 3,000 current students and over 19,000 alumni, the Monte Ahuja College of Business ranks among the largest in Ohio. The College of Business is the business school at East Carolina University. Susan Martin

Susan Work Martin is an American academic administrator who was most recently the interim president of San José State University. Previously, Martin served as president of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan from 2008 to 2015. She was the first female president in the university’s 160-year history. She held a simultaneous appointment as Professor of Accounting in the College of Business during her tenure at Eastern.

Eastern Michigan University College of Arts and Sciences is one of the Colleges at Eastern Michigan University. Today there are more than 125 programs of study in the College of Arts and Science. The College of Arts and Sciences oversees the largest number of academic facilities and is the largest college at EMU.

Eastern Michigan University College of Technology (COT) is one of the seven Colleges at Eastern Michigan University. The College of Technology was established in 1980 and is housed in Sill & Roosevelt Halls. The College consists of 1525 undergraduate and 452 graduate students. The College of Technology offers over 25 undergraduate and 10 graduate programs.

Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1849 by the state of Michigan, and opened in 1853 as Michigan State Normal School. Michigan State Normal School was the first in Michigan and the first normal school created outside the original 13 colonies.

Eastern Michigan University College of Education University

The Eastern Michigan University College of Education was established in 1959. Eastern Michigan University has had a long history of developing educators since its founding in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School. Eastern Michigan is the largest producer of educational personnel in the country since 1991. The College of Education is divided into 3 departments and offers over 85 majors and minors and over 30 graduate degrees. The college has one of the oldest special education programs in the United States.

The Eastern Michigan University College of Health and Human Services is one of several colleges at Eastern Michigan University. The college was established the College of Human Services in 1975. The college is housed in the Marshall Building, next to the College of Education. The College of Health and Human Services includes majors such as Social Work, Dietetics, Clinical Laboratory Science, Health Administration and Nursing.

Bruce T. Halle Library

The Bruce T. Halle Library, often simply referred to as Halle Library, is the sole library on the Eastern Michigan University campus. It includes computer labs, study spaces, the Holman Learning Center, a distance-learning classroom, the Faculty Development Center, the IT Help Desk, a multi-media area, a theater, an auditorium, the University archives, the carillon tower, and a Cafe. It houses one of the largest collections of children's literature in the United States. The building has full wireless connectivity, as well as Automated Retrieval Collection (ARC) system, capable of housing 1 million items. While the most-used books are still on shelves, the majority of the school's books are stored within this system, which runs several stories underneath the library itself. The library is named for EMU graduate Bruce Halle, founder of Discount Tire and major benefactor.

Eastern Michigan University Student Center

The Eastern Michigan University Student Center is Eastern Michigan University's student union. Since its opening in 2006 the EMU Student Center replaced McKenny Union as the student hub of campus life. The building is simply referred to as "The Student Center" by students faculty and staff. In 2017 the Student Center was named the number one student union in the country by the College Rank. The building is located in University Park near the Rec/IM and Library. It is also the location of the EMU Bookstore, a 24/7 computer lab, two art galleries, various offices and Admissions. The Student Center also includes the Kiva Room.

UCR School of Business

The School of Business at the University of California, Riverside is home to the largest undergraduate business program in the University of California system, as well as the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management.

Olds-Robb Recreation-Intramural Complex

The Olds-Robb Recreation-Intramural Complex is Eastern Michigan University's recreation center. The Olds-Robb Rec/IM encompasses several buildings on campus. The Olds-Robb Student Recreation/Intramural Complex, which opened in 1982, contains an indoor track, two weight rooms, and a whirlpool, as well as Jones Natatorium, Big Bob's Lake House and a picnic area between the Rec/IM building and Downing Hall. The Rec/IM is also attached to Bowen Field House.

Eastern Michigan University Historic District United States historic place

Eastern Michigan University Historic District is an area of land on the very south end of the Eastern Michigan University campus. Eastern Michigan University is a comprehensive, co-educational public university located in Ypsilanti, Michigan in Washtenaw County. The university was founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School. Several buildings since its founding have achieved historical significance and eventually establishing it on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The district was established in 1984.

Kim Schatzel

Kim E. Schatzel is an American academic administrator who is the 14th president of Towson University. She joined Eastern Michigan University in January 2012 as provost and executive vice president of academic and student affairs, and became interim president on July 8, 2015, following the resignation of Susan Martin. Schatzel was previously dean of the college of business at University of Michigan–Dearborn.
