Programs
The College of Arts and science has over 125 majors and minors. The school itself houses the most majors at EMU. Some of the notable CAS programs include the Historic Preservation program under the Department of Geography and Geology and the Forensics program under the School of Communication, Media and Theatre Arts.
Forensics
EMU is home to one of the nation's most successful forensics (competitive speech) teams. The EMU Forensics team, currently ranked 4th in the nation, has the distinction of being the only program in the country to place in the top 10 at every NFA national championship since they began in 1971. [5] The EMU forensics team has won 10 team national championships and 69 individual national championships. With 38 out of a possible 40 state championships, the team is the foremost forensics competitive team in the state of Michigan. This reputation has been enhanced by the fact that EMU competitors have won over 200 individual state championships.
Historic preservation
EMU's historic preservation program, in the Department of Geography and Geology, is the nation's largest historical preservation graduate program, and the only one in Michigan. [6] [7] Founded in 1979 with support from a grant from the Preservation Education Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the program has won widespread recognition, including a Certificate of Commendation in 1989 from the American Association of State & Local History, co-hosting the Third Global Congress in Heritage Interpretation in 1991, hosting the 1997 meeting of the Pioneer America Society, [6] [8] [9] and the 2009 Michigan Historic Preservation Network Government/Institutional Award. [6] [10] With the abolition of Michigan's Department of History, Arts, and Libraries, the EMU historic preservation program will take over preparation of text for the Michigan Historical Marker Program. Music
Teaching of music began at Michigan State Normal School in the second year of operation. In 1881, the State Board of Education authorized the creation of a Conservatory of Music, located on a site where Boone Hall now stands (across from the water tower, on cross st.). Because of this new modern building, the music program began to grow and thrive at Michigan State Normal School. When more music students came to learn and perform at MSNC, the administration decided that the conservatory of music was not sufficient anymore for the current demand the college was drawing for music. The board of regents hired Smith, Hinchman, & Grylls, Detroit to construct the building. After taking about three years to complete, Pease auditorium would now house musical events of all kinds. The music program continued to grow. The music program today has about 1,100 students at Eastern Michigan University and has classes in Alexander hall as well as Pease auditorium. [13]
Northern Michigan University (NMU) is a public university in Marquette, Michigan. The university was established in 1899. With enrollment of about 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students, Northern Michigan University is the Upper Peninsula's largest university.
Western Michigan University (WMU) is a public research university in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was established in 1903 by Dwight B. Waldo. Its enrollment, as of the Fall 2019 semester, was 21,470. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
Eastern Michigan University, is a public research university in Ypsilanti, Michigan, United States. The university was founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School. Today, the university is governed by an eight-member board of regents whose members are appointed by the governor of Michigan for eight-year terms. The school belongs to the Mid-American Conference and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Since 1991 EMU athletes have been known as "Eagles" and the school mascot, Swoop, was officially adopted by the university three years later. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
Illinois State University (ISU) is a public research university in Normal, Illinois. Founded in 1857 as Illinois State Normal University, it is the oldest public university in Illinois. The university emphasizes teaching and is recognized as one of the top ten largest producers of teachers in the US according to the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
Sherzer Hall is an academic building on the Eastern Michigan University campus, located in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Sherzer Hall is one of four buildings comprising the Eastern Michigan University Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was designed by E. W.. Arnold of Battle Creek and survived two fires. Sherzer Hall has a red-brick exteriors Sherzer's exterior has a few mildly Romanesque and Georgian elements. Due to its unique style causes it to defies stylistic classification. Sherzer also is home to Sherzer Observatory which was established in 1878 and eventually moved to the top of Sherzer Hall in 1903.
Allen University is a private historically black university in Columbia, South Carolina. It has more than 600 students and still serves a predominantly Black constituency. The campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Allen University Historic District.
The Cultural Center Historic District is a historic district located in Midtown Detroit, Michigan, which includes the Art Center : the Detroit Public Library, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Horace H. Rackham Education Memorial Building were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The district contains several cultural attractions.
Susan Work Martin is an American academic administrator who was most recently the interim president of San José State University. Previously, Martin served as president of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan from 2008 to 2015. She was the first female president in the university’s 160-year history. She held a simultaneous appointment as Professor of Accounting in the College of Business during her tenure at Eastern.
McKenny Hall, previously called McKenny Union and Charles McKenny Union, was the first student union on the campus of a teachers' college when it opened in 1931. At various times the building has included bookstores, a bowling alley, a bank, and a food court, as well as a ballroom and other social and meeting spaces. Today the building is known as McKenny Hall and is home to human resources and academic advising and career services. After The EMU Student Center opened, McKenny closed in 2006 for renovations to preserve the building's age. Since then the university uses the historic building as office space for various departments. The building faces Cross Street and the Ypsilanti Water Tower.
Pease Auditorium is a music venue on the campus of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Built in 1914, Pease auditorium is the 4th oldest standing building on Eastern Michigan University's campus. The auditorium was constructed in 1914 for $243,963. For the time, that was a considerable amount of money. Today Pease is home to the university's music performances and as well as some performing arts productions. With a seating capacity of 1,700, Pease is a prime spot for many events held by the community.
SIUE College of Arts and Sciences, often referred to as CAS, is an academic college of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville located in Edwardsville, Illinois, United States.
Eastern Michigan University College of Technology (COT) is one of the seven Colleges at Eastern Michigan University. The College of Technology was established in 1980 and is housed in Sill & Roosevelt Halls. The College consists of 1525 undergraduate and 452 graduate students. The College of Technology offers over 25 undergraduate and 10 graduate programs.
Eastern Michigan University College of Business is one of the colleges at Eastern Michigan University. EMU's College of Business is housed in the Gary M. Owen building in downtown Ypsilanti, which has been its site since 1991. Students are able to take a shuttle to the College of Business, which runs in a 20-minute loop around campus.
Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1849 by the state of Michigan, and opened in 1853 as Michigan State Normal School. Michigan State Normal School was the first in Michigan and the first normal school created outside the original 13 colonies.
The Eastern Michigan University College of Education was established in 1959. Eastern Michigan University has had a long history of developing educators since its founding in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School. Eastern Michigan is the largest producer of educational personnel in the country since 1991. The College of Education is divided into 3 departments and offers over 85 majors and minors and over 30 graduate degrees. The college has one of the oldest special education programs in the United States.
The Eastern Michigan University College of Health and Human Services is one of several colleges at Eastern Michigan University. The college was established the College of Human Services in 1975. The college is housed in the Marshall Building, next to the College of Education. The College of Health and Human Services includes majors such as Social Work, Dietetics, Clinical Laboratory Science, Health Administration and Nursing.
The Bruce T. Halle Library, often simply referred to as Halle Library, is the sole library on the Eastern Michigan University campus. It includes computer labs, study spaces, the Holman Learning Center, a distance-learning classroom, the Faculty Development Center, the IT Help Desk, a multi-media area, a theater, an auditorium, the University archives, the carillon tower, and a Cafe. It houses one of the largest collections of children's literature in the United States. The building has full wireless connectivity, as well as Automated Retrieval Collection (ARC) system, capable of housing 1 million items. While the most-used books are still on shelves, the majority of the school's books are stored within this system, which runs several stories underneath the library itself. The library is named for EMU graduate Bruce Halle, founder of Discount Tire and major benefactor.
The Eastern Michigan University Student Center is Eastern Michigan University's student union. Since its opening in 2006 the EMU Student Center replaced McKenny Union as the student hub of campus life. The building is simply referred to as "The Student Center" by students faculty and staff. In 2017 the Student Center was named the number one student union in the country by the College Rank. The building is located in University Park near the Rec/IM and Library. It is also the location of the EMU Bookstore, a 24/7 computer lab, two art galleries, various offices and Admissions. The Student Center also includes the Kiva Room.
Eastern Michigan University Historic District is an area of land on the very south end of the Eastern Michigan University campus. Eastern Michigan University is a comprehensive, co-educational public university located in Ypsilanti, Michigan in Washtenaw County. The university was founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School. Several buildings since its founding have achieved historical significance and eventually establishing it on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The district was established in 1984.
