Ludhiana is the largest city and largest industrial hub in Punjab, India. It is the biggest city north of Delhi. It is known for hosiery and bicycle manufacturing.[ citation needed ]

As of 2014 Ludhiana had 19.1 percent of Punjab's employment. [1]

Textile industry

Before Partition, Lahore was the biggest industrial hub of Punjab. Then industry moved and settled in Ludhiana. Ludhiana became very important in India for its hosiery and textile industry. Now Ludhiana is Punjab's and (after Delhi) North India's largest city.

Vardhman Group is a textile group based there. Vardhman was established in 1965 by Lala Rattan Chand Oswal. The group is engaged in manufacturing and trading in yarn, fabric, sewing thread, acrylic fibre and alloy steel.

Ludhiana Stock Exchange

LSC was established in the year 1983. By 1999, the exchange had a total of 284 brokers, out of which 79 were corporate brokers. Among 284 brokers, it was further classified as 212 proprietor broker, 2 partnership broker and 70 corporate broker. Then, there was only 2 sub- brokers registered. It has branches in Jalandhar, Amritsar and Chandigarh.

Ludhiana Metro was a proposed rapid transit system for the city of Ludhiana, Punjab. It is expected to cost 10,516 crore.

Vardhman Group is a textile group based in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, that was established in 1965. The group is engaged in manufacturing and trading in Yarn and Processed Fabric, Sewing Thread, Acrylic fibre and Alloy steel. Vardhman group was incorporated in 1962 as Vardhman Spinning & General Mills (VSGML). The company was promoted by VS Oswal and RC Oswal initially and is now headed by S. P. Oswal Jain. The total number of employees in the company as of April 2011 is 23,000.

The economy of Indore is notable for its importance in the areas of trading, finance and distribution in Madhya Pradesh. Indore has the largest economy in Madhya Pradesh and is the business and trading capital of the state. Pithampur Industrial Area, near Indore houses more than 1200 industrial units. Pithampur is a part of Indore Metropolitan Region, though its economic contributions are not accounted in Indore District. Located at the crossroads of western and central India, Indore has relatively good connectivity and has been the hub of trade and commerce, not only for the state but also for western India. Old-time industries which flourished in Indore were handloom, hand dyeing, manufacture of niwar, oil extraction by ghani, manufacture of bamboo mats, baskets, metal utensils, embossing and engraving of gold and silver ornaments, shellac industry, etc. Ayurvedic and Unani medicines from roots and herbs were manufactured under state patronage. Indore has one of the largest trans-shipment centers for truck transport.

The Amritsar Delhi Kolkata Industrial corridor (ADKIC) is a proposed economic corridor in India between the cities of Amritsar, Delhi and Kolkata, developed by the Government of India.

S. P. Oswal Jain is an Indian industrialist and the present head of the Vardhman Group The Government of India honoured him in 2010, with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, for his services to the fields of trade and industry.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Economy of Delhi</span>

The economy of Delhi is the 12th largest among states and union territories of India. The Nominal GSDP of the NCR was estimated at 272.603 Billion and the Nominal GSDP of the NCT of Delhi for 2023-24 was estimated at 11.07 lakh crore (US$130 billion) recording an annual growth of 9.2%. Growth rate in 2014-15 was 9.2%. In 2020-21, the tertiary sector contributed 85% of Delhi's GSDP followed by the secondary and primary sectors at 12% and 3% respectively. The services sector recorded an annual growth of 7.3%. Delhi is the largest commercial centre in northern India. As of 2021, recent estimates of the economy of the urban area of Delhi have ranged from $370 billion and it has $272.603 billion as ranking it either the most or second-most productive metro area of India.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation</span> Indian state-owned agency

Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC), formerly Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation (HSIDC), headquartered at Panchkula, is a 100% state-owned agency of the government of Haryana in the Indian state of Haryana. For ease of doing business, Haryana is the first state in India to introduce a labour policy in 2005 and Land Pooling Policy in 2017, for which HSIIDC acts as the nodal agency. Haryana Financial Corporation provides financial assistance for setting up new industrial units and for the expansion and diversification of the existing industries. Various universities, educational and training institutes, including the nation's first skills university Haryana Vishwakarma Skill University, provide the human resources to capitalise on the infrastructure created by the HSIIDC.

Amritsar is and was the second largest city of East Punjab and United Punjab. It is a Big Commercial, Trading, Textile and Tourist hub of Punjab. There is a proposed Software Technology Park at Amritsar to make it an IT hub. This STPI centre will be functional by the next fiscal year.

Government Institute of Textile Chemistry and Knitting Technology (GITC&KT) is a Government polytechnic college at Ludhiana Punjab. The college is affiliated with the Punjab State Board of Technical Education and Industrial Training Chandigarh, India.
