It consists of 23 campuses and seven off-campus centers, which together enroll 457,992 students and employ 56,256 faculty and staff members. In California, it is one of the three public higher education systems, along with the University of California and the California Community Colleges systems. The CSU system is officially incorporated as The Trustees of the California State University, and is headquartered in Long Beach, California.

Cynthia Teniente-Matson is the 32nd and current president of San José State University and the former president of Texas A&M University–San Antonio. Born in San Antonio, Teniente-Matson spent her adolescence in California, studied at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and studied and worked at the University of Alaska Anchorage. She then returned to California to work at California State University, Fresno, where she would later earn her doctorate before returning to San Antonio to accept a position as TAMU–San Antonio's president. As president, she has overseen the university's growth into a four-year college with its first freshman class in 2016, and she has made statements about expanding the university's resources and infrastructure, partnering with local businesses, and involving the surrounding community.
James T. Minor is an American academic administrator and sociologist. He currently serves as the Chancellor of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He took office on March 1, 2022. Minor was appointed Assistant Vice Chancellor and Senior Strategist in the Office of the Chancellor at the California State University in September 2016. He was appointed by the Obama Administration to serve as the Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Postsecondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education from 2014 to 2016.
Stephen Perez is an American academic and university administrator. He is the 13th and current president of California State University, Chico, and was formerly an interim president of San José State University.
