The Embassy of the United States in Harare is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Zimbabwe. The embassy's commitment includes cultural and educational exchange programs such as the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Mandela Washington Fellowship Program. [1]
The United States recognized the Republic of Zimbabwe on April 18, 1980, coinciding with Zimbabwe's independence from the United Kingdom. The U.S. Embassy in Harare, established in Salisbury (now Harare) on the same date, marked the start of diplomatic relations between the two nations. [2] Jeffrey Davidow was appointed as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim at the opening of the embassy. [2]
The U.S. began imposing restrictions and sanctions in 2001 when it passed the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001. [1] The sanctions purported to be for the purposes of promoting democracy, but many believed they were in response to Zimbabwe's decision to redistribute land from settlers to local citizens. [3] Despite these challenges, in May 2019, a new $200 million embassy campus was dedicated. [1]

In response to what was described as the "fast-track land reform" in Zimbabwe, the United States government put the Zimbabwean government on a credit freeze in 2001 through the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001.
