The Embassy of the United States in Bamako is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Mali.
Diplomatic relations between the United States and the Federation of Mali were established on June 20, 1960, following the Federation's independence from France and the elevation of the Consulate General at Dakar to Embassy status with Donald A. Dumont serving as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim. These relations continued with the Republic of Mali after Senegal withdrew from the Federation on August 20, 1960, and the Soudanese Republic was renamed the Republic of Mali on September 22, 1960. The Consulate General in Bamako was subsequently elevated to Embassy status with John G. Dean as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim. [1]
Mali and the United States have faced several challenges, including the Mali War, the 2012 Malian coup d'état, and ongoing security issues due to the presence of violent extremist groups in the northern two-thirds of Mali. [2] [3] The 2015 Bamako hotel attack was a mass shooting that resulted in 20 fatalities, including an American not affiliated with the embassy. [4] Approximately 12 Americans, some of whom were U.S. embassy personnel, were present in the hotel at the time of the attack. [5] U.S. embassy military staff, in collaboration with Malian forces, successfully liberated over 100 hostages during the incident. [6] [7]
A diplomatic mission or foreign mission is a group of people from a state or organization present in another state to represent the sending state or organization officially in the receiving or host state. In practice, the phrase usually denotes an embassy or high commission, which is the main office of a country's diplomatic representatives to another country; it is usually, but not necessarily, based in the receiving state's capital city. Consulates, on the other hand, are smaller diplomatic missions that are normally located in major cities of the receiving state. As well as being a diplomatic mission to the country in which it is situated, an embassy may also be a nonresident permanent mission to one or more other countries.
Following independence in 1960, Mali initially followed a socialist path and was aligned ideologically with the communist bloc. Mali's foreign policy orientation became increasingly pragmatic and pro-Western over time. Since the institution of a democratic form of government in 1992, Mali's relations with the West in general and the United States in particular have improved significantly. U.S.-Malian relations are described by the U.S. Department of State as "excellent and expanding," especially given Mali's recent record of democratic stability in the volatile area of West Africa and its avowed support of the war on terrorism. Mali is reported to be one of the largest recipients of U.S. aid in Africa.
A chargé d'affaires, plural chargés d'affaires, often shortened to chargé (French) and sometimes in colloquial English to charge-D, is a diplomat who serves as an embassy's chief of mission in the absence of the ambassador. The term is French for "charged with business", meaning they are responsible for the duties of an ambassador. Chargé is masculine in gender; the feminine form is chargée d'affaires.

On 20 November 2015, Islamist militants took 170 hostages and killed 20 of them in a mass shooting at the Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako, the capital city of Mali. United States Army Sergeant First Class Kyle Morgan, a member of the Combat Applications Group, the elite DOD special mission unit commonly referred to as Delta Force, along with the assistance of GySgt Jared Stout, a MARSOC CSO that worked out of the same embassy as Morgan, launched an assault with Malian Security Forces on the hotel to recover the surviving hostages. Al-Mourabitoun claimed that it carried out the attack "in cooperation with" al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb; an al Qaeda member confirmed that the two groups cooperated in the attack.
Algeria–Mali relations refers to bilateral relations between Algeria and Mali. Algeria maintains an embassy in Bamako and a consulate in Gao, while Mali has an embassy in Algiers.
Mali and Spain have maintained diplomatic relations since 2006. Mali has an embassy in Madrid, and honorary consulates in Barcelona and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The diplomatic representation of the Republic of Mali in Spain was opened at the beginning of 2011, not only in order to strengthen ties between Mali and Spain, but also to guarantee a service to Malian citizens living in Spain. Spain has an embassy in Bamako.

The Embassy of the United States in Antananarivo is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Madagascar. Madagascar is a beneficiary of U.S. aid as one of the largest bilateral donors, particularly in the fight against malaria. The Embassy of the United States in Antananarivo also oversees diplomatic relations with the Comoros, as the U.S. Ambassador to Madagascar is concurrently accredited there.
