Endgame is a 2002 light gun shooter game developed by Cunning Developments and published by Empire Interactive, released exclusively for the PlayStation 2 video game console. Built in the RenderWare engine, it features destructable environments and a rudimentary positional audio system. The game was released in the Europe on June 3 and two months later on August 22 in North America. The game's story follows Jade Cornell as she uncovers a plot by the megacorp named EuroDream Technologies who wants to use its own virtual reality technology to control humanity. Cornell is tasked by the Octavian, an Artificial Intelligence, to put a stop to the scheme and save the world.
The game requires Namco's proprietary GunCon controller in order to function properly, it is only compatible with both the first and second generation of the peripheral. Reviews were mixed, who considered the game inferior to its contemparies like Time Crisis and House of the Dead, although the interactive environments received some praise.
The game is a first-person on-rails shooter using Namco's GunCon light gun controller, in the vein of the Time Crisis series. The player interacts by aiming directly the physical light gun on part of the screen where enemies appear. Like the aforementioned series, the game includes a reload and cover system, which allows the player to avoid enemy fire by ducking behind objects. [1] There are twenty different stages with seven bosses. [2] Between levels there are cutscenes that play. With every level there is a set time limit and if the player is too reckless in their shooting, the game will spawn more enemies in, resulting in the player entering a special mode called, "Hypermode", in this mode the player receives an increasingly amount of health regeneration. [3] The enemies will use cover and hide behind bulletproof shields and non-combative non-player characters are intermingled with enemies. [2]
Unlike its arcade contemporaries it includes destructible environments and a separate mini-game called Mighty Joe Jupiter, [4] [5] that is divorced from the main campaign and is meant for practice. Additional the game offers challenges for the player to complete, alongside it will track your highscore and offer unlocks. Contrasting to the more realistic levels of the main campaign, these game modes take places on more sci-fi environments like the moon and other planets battling cartoon Martians and other aliens. [5] Upon completion of the main campaign the game unlocks additional difficulty levels, ability to replay levels, three new gun options, a "mirror mode" and an option the play whole game in hypermode. [6] Endgame uses a rudimentary positional audio system, the sound will come from the direction the player shoots at. [1]
Set on a near future Earth in 2020, in the game you take control of the player character named Jade Cornell, who ends up uncovering a plot by the EuroDream Corporation who wants to use their latest virtual reality technology, called VirtualWorldTomorrow, to control the minds of the general populace. Besides stopping EuroDream, Cornell is also charged with rescueing her friend Tyler, the person who informed her of the plot and who was kidnapped in the opening scene of the game by a EuroDream security team. Endgame was developed by British game developer Cunning Developments, who were primarily known for their Pro Pinball series of games. [8] The game was published by Empire Interactive, and distributed by Vivendi Universal in North America and in Australia. [9] [10]
Endgame received "mixed" reviews, with a 57/100 on review aggregator Metacritic and a 61.08% on GameRankings. [11] [12] Ryan Davis of GameSpot called the game "very cut-and-dried light-gun game", that failed to make a strong impression. He only recommends to game to people who are already fan of the genre, describing the gameplay as a "Time Crisis clone" with a paper-thin narrative. [1] Douglass C. Perry of IGN described it as a "stale and uninteresting" game, that lifts almost all of its ideas from Time Crisis, only to create a worse version of it. His only positives were the graphical effects and the numerous breakable objects in the environment. [7]
On the more positive side the reviewer of the Australian website ImpulseGamer, considered a must-own light-gun game for the PlayStation 2. Praising the animations and called the timer feature "a nail-biter" that will keep you on the edge of your seat. He also noted that the calibrating of the G-Con2 was straightforward, except for the part device should be plugged in the second USB-slot to avoid problems. [9]
Time Crisis is a light gun shooter arcade game, developed and released by Namco in 1995, and the first title to be released in the series of the same name. The game differentiated itself from other light gun shooters of the time by incorporating a pedal that controls when the player character takes cover to reload and avoid enemy fire. Players have a limited amount of time to clear each section by defeating enemies. The game's story focuses on Richard Miller, a secret agent, who is sent to rescue a kidnapped woman from a ruthless tyrant seeking to reclaim control of their former country from a new regime.
Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies is a 2001 combat flight simulation video game developed and published by Namco for the PlayStation 2. James Cameron's Dark Angel is a beat 'em up video game based on the television series Dark Angel. It was developed by Radical Entertainment and co-published by Fox Interactive and Vivendi Universal Games through their subsidiary Sierra Entertainment. It was announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in May 2002, shortly after the TV series was canceled. Jessica Alba and Michael Weatherly reprised their roles from the series, voicing Max Guevara and Logan Cale respectively.
The Thing is a 2002 squad-based third-person shooter survival horror video game developed by Computer Artworks and co-published by Vivendi Universal Games under the Black Label Games label and Konami. Time Crisis is a first-person on-rails light gun shooter series of arcade video games by Namco, introduced in 1995. It is focused on the exploits of a fictional international intelligence agency who assigns its best agents to deal with a major threat by a hostile organisation, which has ranged from criminals, terrorists and hostile military outfits, and mostly take place within fictional locations across the world. The arcade series differed from other light gun shooters of its time by incorporating unique mechanics, including the ability to duck into cover to dodge attacks and reload the player's weapon, and forcing players to complete battles in each level within an allotted amount of time.
Ninja Assault is an arcade game developed and released by Namco and Sega in 2000. Two years later it was also published as a PlayStation 2 exclusive title with GunCon 2 compatibility.
Time Crisis 4 is a rail shooter and the fourth installment in the main series. Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica is a light gun shooter video game developed and published by Capcom as part of the Resident Evil series. The arcade version was developed in conjunction with Namco for the arcade machines. The game was released for Sega NAOMI and PlayStation 2. It was released on the PlayStation 2 on November 8, 2001 in Japan and in Europe on March 22, 2002. Whilst the Playstation 2 release is a light gun shooter, the NAOMI arcade release features no lightgun technology whatsoever, instead deferring control of each player entirely to a three-axis joystick in the shape of a gun. The game is the second installment in the Gun Survivor series and the sequel to Resident Evil Survivor. The game is adapted from Resident Evil – Code: Veronica and features enemies and characters from that game, and enemies from Resident Evil 2 and 3. It was followed by Dino Stalker which is a spin-off of Dino Crisis, and has no ties to Resident Evil.
RoboCop is a first-person shooter video game based on the RoboCop films. It was developed and published by French company Titus Interactive, which acquired the rights to produce RoboCop video games in 1999. After several schedule changes, the game was released in 2003 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, and Xbox, with the European versions distributed through Avalon Interactive. A GameCube version was released in Japan in 2004, under the title RoboCop: Aratanaru Kiki. According to Metacritic, the Xbox version, the only one to be released in North America, received "unfavorable" reviews.
Ghoul Panic is a 1999 light gun shooter arcade game developed by Raizing and published by Namco. A version for the PlayStation was released in 2000. Players used lightguns to complete a series of minigames, done by firing at on-screen targets. In these minigames there is an objective that must be fulfilled before the time runs out to progress such as shooting a certain amount of enemies or protecting small, yellow cats from projectiles. It ran on the Namco System 12 arcade hardware.
