Eric James Barron (born October 26,1951) is an American academic administrator who was the 18th president of Pennsylvania State University from 2014 until 2022. [1] He previously was the 14th president of Florida State University and director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder,Colorado.
Barron was born on October 26,1951,in Lafayette,Indiana. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in geology from Florida State University in 1972. He then attended the University of Miami,where he obtained a Master of Science in oceanography 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1980. [2]
From 1980 to 1985,Barron was employed as a post-doctoral research fellow and scientist by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder,Colorado. He subsequently was named an associate professor at the University of Miami,where he served from 1985 to 1986. [3]
In 1986,Barron was named a faculty member at Pennsylvania State University in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences,becoming the dean until leaving Penn State in 2006,to become dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin. There,he held the Jackson chair in earth system science.
In 2008,Barron left the University of Texas to become director of the National Center for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAR) from 2008 to 2010,until being named president of Florida State University in December 2009. [4]
Barron was the 14th president of FSU from February 1,2010, [5] until stepping down on April 2,2014,after being named the president-elect of the Pennsylvania State University in February 2014. [6] Following the departure of Rodney Erickson on May 12,2014,Barron became the 18th president of Penn State.
During his term as Penn State president,he resided in Schreyer House,the official president's residence of the university. [7] In February 2021,Barron indicated to the Penn State Board of Trustees his intent to retire at the end of his contract,in June 2022. [8] Barron's tenure ended in May 2022,when he was succeeded by Neeli Bendapudi. [9] During his presidency,one of Barron's focuses was attempting to transform the Greek life system at Penn State following the death of Tim Piazza. [10]
Barron is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has been chair of numerous National Science Foundation,NASA and United States National Research Council (NRC) committees and panels,including the NRC climate research committee,the NRC board on atmospheric sciences and climate and NASA's earth observing system science executive committee. John E. Thrasher is a former state legislator,businessman,lawyer and lobbyist who served as the 15th president of Florida State University. He was approved by the Florida Board of Governors on November 6,2014 and took office on November 10,2014. On September 11,2020,Thrasher and the university board of trustees announced his retirement in a joint statement. In May 2021,Richard McCullough was chosen by Florida State University’s board of trustees to succeed Thrasher.
Rodney Allen Erickson is an American academic administrator who served as the 17th president of Pennsylvania State University from 2011 to 2014. Formerly executive vice president and provost,he was named interim president of Penn State on November 9,2011,after previous president Graham Spanier was forced to resign in the wake of the Penn State sex abuse scandal,after which the "interim" tag was removed later that month. The Food Science Building at Penn State,which houses the Berkey Creamery,is named after Erickson.

The Penn State Board of Trustees is the 38-member governing body for Pennsylvania State University. Its members include the university's president,the Governor of the Commonwealth,and the state Secretaries of Agriculture,Conservation and Natural Resources,and Education,as well as a representative for the Governor. The other members include six trustees appointed by the Governor,nine elected by alumni,six elected by Pennsylvania agricultural societies,six by a board representing business and industry enterprises,3 at-large,1 student,and 1 academic trustee. Undergraduate students do not elect any trustees;the court case Benner v. Oswald ruled that the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment did not require the undergraduate students be allowed to participate in the selection of trustees.
James Marshall Shepherd is an American meteorologist,professor at the University of Georgia's Department of Geography,director of the university's atmospheric sciences program,and 2013 president of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). In 2020 he was awarded the AAAS Award for Public Engagement with Science. In 2021,he was elected to the U. S. National Academy of Engineering.
Timothy Laurence Killeen is a British and American geophysicist,space physicist,professor,and university administrator. Killeen took office as the president of the University of Illinois system in 2015. He has been the principal investigator on research projects for NASA and the National Science Foundation. Killeen has authored more than 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals as well as more than 300 other publications and papers. He has served on various White House committees and task forces and is a past editor-in-chief of the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics.
Nancy Helen Marcus was an American biologist and oceanographer. During her graduate studies,Marcus became known as an expert on copepod ecology and evolutionary biology. She began her career as a postdoctoral fellow at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution where she studied copepod dormancy and its implications for marine aquaculture. She continued her field research as a professor of oceanography and later as the director of the Florida State University Marine Laboratory (FSU). During this time,Marcus was elected as a Fellow of the Association for Women in Science and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and served as the president of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography. As the president,she led efforts to increase education activities and increase the endowment fund.
Neeli Bendapudi is an Indian-American academic administrator who is the 19th president of Pennsylvania State University. From 2018 until 2021,she served as the 18th president of the University of Louisville. In December 2021,Penn State announced Bendapudi as the university's president;she succeeded Eric J. Barron following his retirement. She assumed office in May 2022 and is the first woman and the first non-white person to serve as Penn State's president.

Makenzie Lystrup is an American planetary scientist and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of SPIE,best known as a prominent voice in civil space projects and science policy. Lystrup is the director of the Goddard Space Flight Center. She has previously served as the vice president and general manager for civil space at Ball Aerospace.
