The 1989 European Women Basketball Championship , commonly called EuroBasket Women 1989, was the 22nd regional championship held by FIBA Europe. The competition was held in Bulgaria and took place from 13 June to 19 June 1989. Soviet Union won the gold medal and Czechoslovakia the silver medal while Bulgaria won the bronze.

EuroBasket Women is a biennial international women's basketball competition held between the nations of FIBA Europe for women's national teams. EuroBasket Women is also used as a qualifying tournament for the FIBA Women's World Cup and also the Olympic Games.

Dena Head is an American retired women's basketball player. She is best remembered as the first player drafted in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).

The FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, also known as the Basketball World Cup for Women or simply the FIBA Women's World Cup, is an international basketball tournament for women's national teams held quadrennially. It was created by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Its inaugural game was in 1953 in Chile, three years after the first men's World Championship. For most of its early history, it was not held in the same year as the men's championship, and was not granted a consistent quadrennial cycle until 1967. After the 1983 event, FIBA changed the scheduling so that the women's tournament would be held in even-numbered non-Olympic years, a change that had come to the men's tournament in 1970.

Vanya Voynova ; December 27, 1934 – March 9, 1993) was a Bulgarian basketball player. She has played for Slavia Sofia from 1950 to 1968, winning the European Champions' Cup in 1959 and 1963 and Bulgarian league 12 times from 1953 to 1965. With the Bulgaria women's national basketball team, she has won silver in the 1959 World Championship, bronze in the 1964 World Championship, gold in the 1958 European Championship, silver in the 1960 European Championship and 1964 European Championship and bronze in the 1954 European Championship and 1962 European Championship. She has been inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007.

The 1956 European Women's Basketball Championship was the 5th regional championship held by FIBA Europe for women. The competition was held in Prague, Czechoslovakia and took place June 2–10, 1956. The Soviet Union won their fourth consecutive gold medal, with Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria repeating their performance of the previous tournament, winning silver and bronze respectively.
