Basketball tournaments have been staged at the Universiade since 1959. The men's tournament was introduced at the 1959 Summer Universiade and the women's tournament was introduced at the 1961 Summer Universiade. The tournament was not held during the 1975 event.

Tennis has been a part of the Summer Universiade program since the games' first edition in 1959, with the exception of the 1975 Summer Universiade and again in 1989. The first change at the program was at the 1987 edition, when FISU decided awards two bronze medals for the losers of the semifinals, extinguishing the fourth place. The second change was in 2009, when the team competitions were included. Currently, seven events are played at Universiade. Individual, double and team contests for men and women, as well as mixed doubles.
Men's and Women's Artistic Gymnastics have been contested at the Pan American Games since the 1951 edition. In 1987, Rhythmic Gymnastics was introduced. In 2007, Trampoline was added to the program.
Football was the optional sport at the 1979 edition. Between 1985 and 2019, football was a recognized mandatory sport. The women's football competition began in the 1993 edition as optional event. Due the creation of the FISU University Football World Cup in 2019, the sport will no longer be part of the Summer World University Games program starting at that year. With this change, the number of mandatory sports will be kept at fifteen, since the place will be occupied by badminton which after five editions as an optional sport turned a compulsory sport.

The Wrestling competition in the 1977 Summer Universiade were held in Sofia, Bulgaria. It was added as an optional sports by the host country, Bulgaria.
Volleyball events were contested at the 2007 Summer Universiade in Bangkok, Thailand.

Ice hockey tournaments have been staged at the Universiade since 1962. The men's tournament was introduced at the 1962 Winter Universiade. The women's tournament was introduced at the 2009 Winter Universiade.

Water polo has been part of the Universiade program since the first games, in 1959. A women's water polo tournament was introduced for the 2009 Summer Universiade. Water polo was not included in 1975 and 1989.
Fencing events have been contested at every Universiade since 1959 Summer Universiade in Turin. After not being included in 1975.
The Speed skating events have been contested at the Universiade since 1968. The sport have a special status at the event, because the host cities are not expected to build a speed skating rink specifically for the Universiade. In years where the Winter Universiade doesn't take place, or doesn't include speed skating, the World University Speed Skating Championships are sometimes held instead.
Taekwondo events have been contested at Universiade since 2003 Games in Daegu, South Korea, with one exception in 2013 in Kazan, Russia
The Cycling Tournament at the 1983 Summer Universiade took place in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) in July 1983. Cycling was included in the Summer Universiade programme as an optional sport. There were 12 cycling events; 8 for track cycling and 4 for road cycling. The venue for track cycling was the Argyll Velodrome. The finish of the road races were in Hawerlark Park.
An all-time Universiade medal table from 1959 Summer Universiade to 2021 Summer Universiade and 1960 Winter Universiade to 2023 Winter Universiade, is tabulated below. The table is the consequence of the sum of the medal tables of the various editions of the Summer Universiade and the Winter Universiade. The results code are attributed to the IOC country code. Israel at the Universiade has led to 17 medals, 16 at the Summer Universiade and 1 at the Winter Universiade.
Weightlifting events have been contested at Universiade three times as optional sport in 2011, 2013, and 2017.
Finland participated at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei, Taiwan, from 19 to 30 August 2017. The team won one gold medal – by Ari-Pekka Liukkonen in the men's 50 metre freestyle swimming event – and three other medals in athletics events.
