Ice hockey tournaments have been staged at the Universiade since 1962. The men's tournament was introduced at the 1962 Winter Universiade. The women's tournament was introduced at the 2009 Winter Universiade.

The FISU World University Games, formerly the Universiade, is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The former name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad".
Figure skating is a part of the FISU World University Games. It was first held as part of the Universiade in 1960. Medals may be awarded in men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, ice dancing, and synchronized skating.
The IIHF World Ranking is a ranking of the performance of the national ice hockey teams of member countries of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). It is based on a formula giving points for each team's placings at IIHF-sanctioned tournaments over the previous four years. The ranking is used to determine seedings and qualification requirements for future IIHF tournaments. The current leader in rankings is Canada in both men's and women's play.
Football was the optional sport at the 1979 edition and two of the optional sports at the 1985 edition.Between 1987 and 2019, football was a recognized mandatory sport. The women's football competition began in the 1993 edition as optional event. Due the creation of the FISU University Football World Cup in 2019, the sport will no longer be part of the Summer World University Games program starting at that year. With this change, the number of mandatory sports will be kept at fifteen, since the place will be occupied by badminton which after five editions as an optional sport turned a compulsory sport.
Swimming is one of the sports at the biennial Universiade competition. It has been one of the event's competed sports since the inaugural edition. It was not included in 1975 and 1989.This table also includes the results of open water events, which are optional since 2011.
Volleyball tournaments have been staged at the Universiade since 1959. The men's tournament was introduced at the 1959 Summer Universiade, while the women's tournament was introduced at the 1961 Summer Universiade. After not being included in 1975 and 1989.

Water polo has been part of the Universiade program since the first games, in 1959. A women's water polo tournament was introduced for the 2009 Summer Universiade. Water polo was not included in 1975 and 1989.
Curling has been a part of the Winter Universiade since it was featured was optional sport in the 2003 Winter Universiade in Tarvisio. It became a compulsory sport as of the 2007 Winter Universiade in Turin.
The Nordic combined events have been contested at the Universiade since 1960, though were not included in 1975 and 1981. Since Erzurum 2011, the sport has become an optional sport in the Universiade.Starting at the 2023 edition women's and mixed events are also on the program.
The Speed skating events have been contested at the Universiade since 1968. The sport have a special status at the event, because the host cities are not expected to build a speed skating rink specifically for the Universiade. In years where the Winter Universiade doesn't take place, or doesn't include speed skating, the World University Speed Skating Championships are sometimes held instead.
The Alberta Pandas ice hockey team represents the University of Alberta in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association of U Sports. The team was led by head coach Howie Draper from 1997 until 2023, when Draper left to become head coach of PWHL New York. The current head coach is Darren Bilawchuk. The program has won the most Canada West conference championships with 14 and the most U Sports national championships with eight.
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's ice hockey team is the women's college ice hockey team that represents the Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. The team competes as a member of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA), under the U Sports association. The Golden Hawks play their home games at Sunlife Financial Arena.
Curling is a minor sport in Turkey. It is governed by the Turkish Ice Skating Federation and has been a member of the World Curling Federation since 2009. The country has one dedicated curling venue, the Milli Piyango Curling Arena in Erzurum. Turkey is ranked 39th in the world in men's curling and 31st in women's.
An all-time Universiade medal table from 1959 Summer Universiade to 2021 Summer Universiade and 1960 Winter Universiade to 2023 Winter Universiade, is tabulated below. The Philippines has participated at the Universiade debuting at the 1967 Summer Universiade. From 1967 until 2007, athletes representing the country were sent by the University Athletic Association of the Philippines with sanction from Philippine Olympic Committee. Since 2011 it is the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), a member of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), that has been sending competitors representing the country at the Universiade.
Curling at the 2017 Winter Universiade was held from January 30 to February 7 at the Almaty Arena in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Ukraine competed at the 2023 Winter World University Games in Lake Placid, United States, from 12 to 22 January 2023.
Ukraine competed at the 1995 Summer Universiade in Fukuoka, Japan, from 23 August to 3 September 1995. Ukraine did not compete in baseball and water polo. Ukrainian women's basketball team finished 11th, men's football team ranked 4th, and men's volleyball team placed 11th.
Ice hockey at the 2009 Winter Universiade comprised two ice hockey tournaments – a men's tournament and a women's tournament – during the Harbin 2009 edition of the Universiade. Both tournaments were hosted in Harbin, China and began on 18 February 2009. The event featured the inaugural women's ice hockey tournament at the Winter Universiade – the men's ice hockey tournament was first introduced in 1962.
