Swimming is one of the sports at the biennial Universiade competition. It has been one of the event's competed sports since the inaugural edition. It was not included in 1975 and 1989.This table also includes the results of open water events, which are optional since 2011.

The 1960 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVII Olympiad and commonly known as Rome 1960, were an international multi-sport event held from 25 August to 11 September 1960 in Rome, Italy. Rome had previously been awarded the administration of the 1908 Summer Olympics, but following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906, the city had no choice but to decline and pass the honour to London. The Soviet Union won the most gold and overall medals at the 1960 Games.
The European Aquatics Championships is the continental Aquatics championship for Europe, which is organised by LEN—the governing body for aquatics in Europe. The Championships are currently held every two years and since 2022, they have included 5 aquatics disciplines: swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, open water swimming and high diving. Prior to 1999, the championships also included water polo, which beginning in 1999 LEN split-off into a separate championships. The open water events are not held during the Olympic year.

The FISU World University Games, formerly the Universiade, is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The former name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad".
Anthony Robin Le Clerc Mosse is a former New Zealand swimmer who competed at two Summer Olympic Games and three Commonwealth Games. He won one Olympic bronze medal, as well as two gold medals, one silver and one bronze at the Commonwealth Games.

Robert Steven Genter is an American former competition swimmer and three-time Olympic medalist. He was a freestyle specialist who earned a gold medal as a member of the winning U.S. team in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. He also won silver medals at the Munich Olympics in the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle events.

Richard William Roth is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic champion, and former world record-holder in two events.
The 2013 Summer Universiade, officially known as the XXVII Summer Universiade, was held in the city of Kazan, Russia, the most northerly city ever to host a Summer Universiade. Over 10,400 university athletes from 162 countries participated in 13 mandatory and 14 optional sports, making the 2013 Universiade the biggest ever in the history of the event. For the first time in history a Cultural Universiade was also included, with many festivals and shows held simultaneously with the sporting events. The Universiade was organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and by the authorities of the Russian Federation.
Vyacheslav ("Slava") Viktorovych Shyrshov is a freestyle swimmer from Ukraine, who won the gold medal in the men's 50 metres freestyle event at the 2003 Summer Universiade in Daegu. He represented his native country at two consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 2000 in Sydney, Australia.
Tennis has been a part of the Summer Universiade program since the games' first edition in 1959, with the exception of the 1975 Summer Universiade and again in 1989. The first change at the program was at the 1987 edition, when FISU decided awards two bronze medals for the losers of the semifinals, extinguishing the fourth place. The second change was in 2009, when the team competitions were included. Currently, seven events are played at Universiade. Individual, double and team contests for men and women, as well as mixed doubles.
Richard Edwin "Rich" Saeger is an American former competition swimmer, 1984 Olympic gold medalist, and former world record-holder in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
John Clifford Moffet is an American former swimmer who competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, having also been selected for the 1980 Summer Olympics that were ultimately boycotted by the United States. At the 1984 Olympics, he finished fifth in the final of the men's 100-meter breaststroke event. In 1985 he won three gold medals at both the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships and the Summer Universiade. In 1986, he concluded his collegiate career, after winning five NCAA Division 1 Championships, and moved into the entertainment industry. As a television producer he is a three-time Primetime Emmy Award winner for The Amazing Race.

David Ashley Fox is an American former competition swimmer who won a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta. He was also a four-time gold medalist at the World University Games, also known as the Summer Universiade.
The 2017 Summer Universiade, officially known as the XXIX Summer Universiade and commonly called Taipei 2017, was a multi-sport event, sanctioned by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), held in the city of Taipei, Taiwan. It took place from August 19 to August 30, 2017.
Tate Jackson is an American competition swimmer who specializes in sprint freestyle events. He is a two-time gold medalist in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and 4 × 100 m medley relay, and a silver medalist in the 100 m freestyle at the 2019 World University Games. As a collegiate athlete for the University of Texas, Jackson was a two-time NCAA champion, an 11-time All American, a three-time NCAA team champion, and an eight-time Big 12 Conference champion. He is also the current conference and school record-holder in the 100-yard freestyle (41.06). As a professional athlete, Jackson represents the Cali Condors in the International Swimming League. In 2021, he was given a one-month ban for breaking anti-doping regulations.
