FIBA European Championship for Small Countries

The FIBA European Championship for Small Countries is the lowest-ranked tier of the biennial FIBA EuroBasket competition, organized by FIBA Europe.

Contents

History

This championship was first introduced in 1988, as the Promotion Cup, the competition organized for the lowest ranked European national basketball teams. Since then, the competition has been held biannually. In 2007, the Promotion Cup was officially renamed EuroBasket Division C. In 2011, after the divisional system for the FIBA EuroBasket was abolished, the FIBA EuroBasket Division C was renamed to FIBA European Championship for Small Countries. [1]

Basketballin Greece erupted with the win of the Greece men's national basketball team at the 1987 EuroBasket in Athens, which caused a general basketball euphoria in the country. Since then, the Greece men's national teams have achieved consistent international success, leading Greece to join Russia, Serbia, Croatia, Italy, Spain, France, and Lithuania in the circle of European basketball powers. The FIBA EuroBasket Women 2010 Division C was the 11th edition of the lowest tier of the women's European basketball championship, which is today known as FIBA Women's European Championship for Small Countries. The tournament took place in Yerevan, Armenia, from 28 June to 3 July 2010. Malta women's national basketball team won the tournament for the second time.
