Slalom skateboarding is a form of downhill skateboard racing that first appeared in the 1960s and 1970s and has made a resurgence in popularity in the 2000s. Slalom racers skate down a course usually marked by plastic cones. The racer tries to get through the course with the fastest time, while knocking down the fewest cones. Each cone typically carries a penalty of a fraction of a second which is added to the skater's time.

X Games XVIII was an action sporting event which took place from June 28 – July 1, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. Venues for the event included the Staples Center, Nokia Theater and the streets near L.A. Live. The games featured the sports of Moto X, skateboarding, BMX, and RallyCross. Last year's X Games 17 was the first ever X Games to feature Enduro X, which replaced Super X. In 2013, the Summer X Games will be held in four international cities in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil ; Barcelona, Spain ; Munich, Germany ; and Los Angeles, California.

Skateboarding was one of four new sports added to the Olympic program for 2020; it is also provisionally approved for the 2024 Summer Olympic games. The proposal to add skateboarding to the Olympics was approved in August 2016.

The 2017 European Skateboarding Championships was held in Malmö, Sweden between May 25-26, 2017 for the park event.

The 2018 European Skateboarding Championships was held in Basel, Switzerland, between 31 August and 2 September for street skateboarding and in Malmö, Sweden, between September 3–6 for park skateboarding.

The World Skateboarding Championship is an annual competition of men's and women's park skateboarding and street skateboarding, organized by World Skate (WS). Until 2017, the two disciplines were contested in separate tournaments, known as the Vans Park Series World Championship, for park skateboarding, and SLS Super Crown World Championship for street skateboarding.
