The 2022 European Championships were the second edition of the European Championships. It was a multi-sport event which took place in Munich, Germany from 11 to 21 August 2022. The event started three days after the closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, Great Britain. [1]
Athletics, cycling, triathlon, women's artistic gymnastics, men's artistic gymnastics and rowing returned after appearing in the inaugural Championships in 2018. New to this edition of the Championships were beach volleyball, canoe sprint, and, for the first time, a full slate of para-sport events, sport climbing and table tennis.
Unlike the 2018 European Championships, swimming, diving, artistic swimming and open water swimming were not part of the program of the event, as the European Aquatics Championships were held at the same time but in Rome, Italy. [2] Golf, in the form of the European Golf Team Championships, did not return for this edition.

As a result of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, athletes from Russia and Belarus were banned from competing at the 2022 European Championships. [4] Two athletes participated as the Athlete Refugee Team. [5] The five British competitors in table tennis were listed as representing England. [6] One athlete was listed as representing World Triathlon. [7]

A European Championship is the top level international sports competition between European athletes or sports teams representing their respective countries or professional sports clubs.
The Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) is an international multi-sport event organized by the Commonwealth Games Federation. The games were held in the years, mid-way between when the Commonwealth Games are held, until 2008. They continued to be held every four years, but in the year after the Commonwealth Games are held, from 2011 to 2015. Since 2017, they've been held in the year before the Commonwealth Games are held. The first edition was held in Edinburgh, Scotland from 10–14 August 2000. The age limitation of the athletes is from 14 to 18.
The VI South American Games were a multi-sport event held in 1998 in Cuenca, Azuay, Ecuador, with some events in Azogues (futsal), Gualaceo (boxing), Guayaquil, Paute (wrestling), and Quito (fencing). The Games were organized by the South American Sports Organization (ODESUR). An appraisal of the games and detailed medal lists were published elsewhere, emphasizing the results of the Argentinian teams.

Jersey is a founder member of the Island Games Association and has participated in every Games since the first in 1985. Youth sports participation includes the Commonwealth Youth Games and Jeux des Isles.
The Gymnasiade, or World Gymnasiade, or World School Sport Games, or ISF World School Sport Games is an international multi-sport event which is organised by the International School Sport Federation (ISF). It is the largest event among many other sport events held by the ISF. Aligned with the philosophy of the organisation, only individuals between the ages of 13 and 18 are eligible to compete.

Great Britain, or in full Great Britain and Northern Ireland, represented by the British Olympic Association (BOA), the previous host of the 2012 Olympics at London, competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016 and the team of selected athletes was officially known as Team GB. British athletes have appeared in every Summer Olympic Games of the modern era, alongside Australia, France, Greece, and Switzerland, though Great Britain is the only country to have won at least one gold medal at all of them. The team represented the United Kingdom, the three Crown Dependencies, and the thirteen British Overseas Territories, ten of whom sent representatives.
Switzerland competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. Swiss athletes have appeared in every edition of the Summer Olympic Games in the modern era, except for a partial boycott of the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne as a protest to the Soviet invasion of Hungary. The Swiss team consisted of 104 athletes, 59 men and 45 women, across seventeen sports.
The European Championships is a multi-sport tournament which brings together the existing European Championships of some of the continent's leading sports every four years. The inaugural edition in 2018 was staged by the host cities of Berlin, Germany and Glasgow, United Kingdom between 2 and 12 August. The second edition in 2022 took place in Munich, Germany. A host for the third edition has not been confirmed.

Around 1,500 athletes competed at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin, whilst at the same time more than 3,000 took part in the other championships in Glasgow. Each European Championship was organised by the respective federation and host city.

Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Liberia competed at the 2019 African Games held from 19 to 31 August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco.
Great Britain, the team of the British Olympic Association (BOA) which represents the United Kingdom, competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024. The delegation of 327 athletes included 172 women and 155 men and featured 73 medallists from previous Games. The team was made up of athletes from the whole United Kingdom including Northern Ireland. Additionally some British overseas territories compete separately from Britain in Olympic competition.
The 2022 Bolivarian Games, officially the XIX Bolivarian Games Valledupar 2022, was an international multi-sport event that was held in Valledupar, Colombia from June 24 to July 5. It was the fifth time of the event in Colombia.
Germany is the host nation of the 2022 European Championships in Munich. It competed with 336 athletes across all 9 sports in the Championships. The team finished with 60 medals, amongst them 26 gold medals, which ranked them 1st at the conclusion of the Championships.
Italy will compete at the 2022 European Championships in Munich from August 11 to August 22, 2022.
The 2022 European Rowing Championships were held from 11 to 14 August 2022 in Oberschleißheim, near Munich, Germany, as part of the multi-sport 2022 European Championships.
North Macedonia competed at the 2022 European Championships in Munich, Germany, from 11–21 August 2018.
