The European Championship is a continental competition of American football founded in 1983 and contested by the member countries of IFAF Europe [ citation needed ]. The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the IFAF World Cup. This Championship is also known as, "the Golden Fair League." Until 2014 the European Federation of American Football coordinated the competition. The first Championship tournament was held in 1983.

In response to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European champion Italy national American football team announced that it refused to play against Russia in October 2022 in a qualifier for the 2023 IFAF European Championships. [1]

The FIFA World Cup was first held in 1930, when FIFA, the world's football governing body, decided to stage an international men's football tournament under the era of FIFA president Jules Rimet who put this idea into place. IFAF Europe is the governing body of American football in Europe. It is a member of the International Federation of American Football. IFAF Europe replaced the European Federation of American Football (EFAF) which had begun in 1976 as the American European Football Federation (AEFF).

American Football Association of Finland is the national governing body of American football in Finland. It was founded in 1979 and it is a founding member of the European Federation of American Football, EFAF and International Federation of American Football, IFAF. Since 2000, American football has grown steadily. In 2006 there were 27 clubs playing the sport with over 100 teams and over 1400 players. In 2012, the association's competitions fielded over 150 teams with more than 2200 licensed players.

The Italy national American football team, nicknamed the Blue Team is the national American football team for Italy. They have been successful, having won the European championship three times, and been runner up three times. They won the 2021 IFAF European Championship, its third European title, having also won in 1983 and 1985.

The Great Britain national American football team, known as the GB Lions represents the UK in international gridiron. It is controlled by the British American Football Association.

The Russia national American football team, is the official American football senior national team of Russia. In 1989, the Moscow Bears team was formed and represented the Soviet Union in the international tournament. During the 1991-1992 international tour the Soviet Union collapsed and season was suspended in the turmoils of the dissolution of the USSR. The team was reformed later in 1992 to finish the season. After 1992 season, the Bears name would no longer represent the national team and the team joined the newly reorganized Russian American Football Championship.

The Dutch Lions is the Dutch national American Football team. The team represents the Netherlands in international competition and is made up entirely of Dutch national players, typically but not exclusively playing in the AFBN and GFL competitions.

This article describes the qualification for the 2015 IFAF World Championship. The final tournament was to be contested by twelve teams, but five teams that later qualify withdrew from the tournament. Sweden qualified automatically as original hosts of the tournament but was among the teams that withdrew. The United States hosted the tournament instead and would have still automatically qualified as the defending world champions if Sweden did not withdraw from the tournament.

The 2018 European Championship was the 14th European Championship in American football. The final tournament was played in Vantaa, Finland from 29 July to 4 August 2018.

The American football tournament at the 2017 World Games in Wrocław was an invitation sport. It was played between 22 and 24 July. There were 172 competitors, from 4 nations, that participated in the tournament. The competition took place at Olympic Stadium.
