Oswald Haselrieder OMRI is an Italian former luger who competed internationally from 1988 to 2010. He achieved success at junior level, taking two bronze medals in singles and a gold in doubles at the World Junior Championships, the latter achieved in partnership with Dietmar Pierhofer. Haselrider and Pierhofer continued to compete together until 1995, when they split up and Haselrieder joined forces with Gerhard Plankensteiner. Haselrieder went on to win the bronze medal in the men's doubles event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin after competing in three previous Winter Olympic Games: in 1992 in the singles event and in doubles in 1998 and 2002. He went on to compete in a fifth Olympics in 2010: he retired soon afterwards after sustaining an injury in training in March of that year.
The FIL World Luge Championships, part of the International Luge Federation (FIL) have taken place on an almost annual basis in non-Winter Olympics years since 1955. The FIL European Luge Championships, part of the International Luge Federation (FIL) have taken place since 1914. From 1914 to 1934, these championships were part of the Internationaler Schlittensportsverband. From 1935 to 1956, the championships were held under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing. Since 1962, the event has been under the auspices of the FIL and has been held in even-numbered years since 1980. Since 2012, it is held annually.
The International Luge Federation is the main international federation for all luge sports. Founded by 13 nations at Davos, Switzerland in 1957, it has members of 53 national luge associations as of 2009 and is based in Berchtesgaden, Germany. In reaction to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, in March 2022 the FIL banned all Russian athletes, coaches, and officials from its events, suspended all Russian officials appointed to its Commissions and Working Groups, and deemed Russia ineligible to host any of its events.

The FIL European Luge Natural Track Championships 1981 took place in Niedernsill, Austria. This was the second time the city has hosted the championships after having done so in 1974.
The FIL European Luge Natural Track Championships 1985 took place in Szczyrk, Poland. This was the first time the championships did not take place either in Austria or in Italy.

The FIL European Luge Natural Track Championships 1999 took place in Szczyrk, Poland. This is the second this city has hosted these championships, doing so previously in 1985.

Walter Mauracher was an Austrian luger who competed from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. A natural track luger, he won the bronze medal in the men's doubles event at the 1990 FIL World Luge Natural Track Championships in Gsies, Italy.
Georg Eberhardter was an Austrian luger who competed from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. A natural track luger, he won the bronze medal in the men's doubles event at the 1990 FIL World Luge Natural Track Championships in Gsies, Italy.
Armin Mair is an Italian luger who competed from 1997 to 2005. A natural track luger, he won five medals at the FIL World Luge Natural Track Championships, including two golds, two silvers, and one bronze (2005).
Peter Lechner is an Austrian luger who competed during the late 1990s and early 2000s. A natural track luger, he won two medals at the FIL World Luge Natural Track Championships with a silver in 2003 and a bronze in 2001 ).
Werner Belkircher was an Italian luger who competed in the mid-1970s. A natural track luger, he won the silver medal in the men's singles event at the 1977 FIL European Luge Natural Track Championships in Seis am Schlern, Italy.
Othmar Neulichedl was an Italian luger who competed in the early 1980s. A natural track luger, he won a bronze medal in the men's singles event at the 1981 FIL European Luge Natural Track Championships in Niedernsill, Austria.
Thomas Schopf is an Austrian luger who has competed since the early 2000s. A natural track luger, he won two medals at the 2009 FIL World Luge Natural Track Championships in Moos, Italy with a silver in mixed team and a bronze in the men's singles events.
Imelda Gruber is an Italian luger who has competed since the mid-2000s. A natural track luger, she won the silver medal in the women's singles event at the 2006 FIL European Luge Natural Track Championships in Umhausen, Austria.
The FIL European Luge Natural Track Championships 2010 was held 15–17 January 2010 in Sankt Sebastian, Austria. A team event debuted at these championships, the first change to the FIL European Luge Natural Track Championships since they began in 1970. Italy earned their 100th medal at these championships.
