The European Mountain Running Championships is an annual international mountain running race. Inaugurated in 2002, it is organised by the European Athletic Association (EAA) in July each year. The venue for the championships is changed each year.
The history of the competition lies in the European Mountain Running Trophy, which was first held in 1994 in Quantin, Belluno, Italy. It was officially sanctioned by the World Mountain Running Association in 1995 and continued until 2001, at which point the EAA introduced the official European Mountain Running Championships. Exclusively a senior championships until 2009, the competition now features separate senior and junior (under 20s) races for both men and women. Medals are awarded on an individual and national team basis. [3] For the team competition, the finishing positions of each country's top three runners are combined, and the team with the smallest cumulative total wins the medals. [4]

They were that year's area championships for mountain running, held by the European Athletic Association. The 2009 edition saw the introduction of two under-20s competitions into the championships programme, complementing the usual men's and women's senior races. The men's race was 11 km long and featured a total climb of 1300 m in altitude, while the women's and under-20s men's competitions were over 9.5 km and scaled a height of 950 m. The women's junior competition was held over 4 km with a total climb of 400 m.

The European Combined Events Team Championships is a track and field competition for European combined track and field events specialists, with contests in men's decathlon event and women's heptathlon. It is organised by European Athletics. It was held annually in 1993–2011 and biennially in 1973–1993 and 2011–2019.

The Balkan Athletics Indoor Championships, also known as the Balkan Indoor Games, is an annual international regional indoor track and field competition between athletes from the Balkans. Following a test event in 1991, it was officially launched in 1994. Organised by the Association of the Balkan Athletics Federations (ABAF), it is typically held in February. The competition complemented the long-running annual outdoor track and field tournament: the Balkan Games.
Andrew Pearson is a British long-distance runner who mainly had success in cross country running. He made eight appearances at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and was an individual and team bronze medallist at the 1995 European Cross Country Championships. He also won silver medals at the European Mountain Running Championships in 1998.

In the men's race Austria's Helmut Schmuck was victorious with minor medallists Antonio Molinari and Davide Milesi leading Italy to the men's team title. Eroica Spiess led a Swiss sweep of the podium in the women's race.
Italy has participated in all editions of the European Mountain Running Championships, since the first edition of 1994 European Mountain Running Championships.
The 2014 European Marathon Cup was the 10th edition of the quadrennial team marathon competition between European countries, which was held in Zürich, Switzerland on 16–17 August. The start and finish points were located on Bürkliplatz, and the route was set along a 10-kilometer circuit on the city streets. It was held in conjunction with the men's and women's individual marathon races at the 2014 European Athletics Championships.
