The 2023 European Women Basketball Championship, commonly called EuroBasket Women 2023, was the 39th edition of the continental tournament in women's basketball, sanctioned by the FIBA Europe. It was co-hosted by Ljubljana, Slovenia and Tel Aviv, Israel between 15 and 25 June 2023. [1]

Contents

Serbia was the defending champions. Belgium won their first title winning 58–64 in the final over Spain, while France won the bronze medal, after defeating Hungary. [2] [3]

Bidding process

The bids were as follows:

On 11 June 2021, Slovenia and Israel won the hosting rights. [4]

Venues

The tournament was initially planned to be played in four venues in four cities. Three venues would have been used for Slovenia and one for Israel. The preliminary matches were scheduled to be held in Tel Aviv, Celje and Koper. The final round will be played in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. In June 2022, it was announced that Ljubljana will host all games played in Slovenia. [5]

Draw

The draw took place on 8 March 2023 in Ljubljana, Slovenia where teams were drawn into four groups of four teams. Teams were seeded according to the FIBA World Rankings. [6] [7]

Seedings

The seeding was confirmed on 6 March 2023. Hosts Slovenia and Israel will each be drawn into a group playing on home soil. Furthermore, before the draw, Slovenia chose to be paired with Serbia, although they would play in different groups, while Israel paired with the Czech Republic and agreed to play in the same group. [8]

The 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, the 18th edition of FIBA's premier international tournament for women's national basketball teams, was held in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain from 22 to 30 September 2018. This was the first edition to use the name of FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. After the last edition in 2014, FIBA changed the name of the competition from the FIBA World Championship for Women, in order to align its name with that of the corresponding men's competition.

The EuroBasket 2022 was the 41st edition of the EuroBasket championship organized by FIBA Europe. It was the first since it was agreed it would take place every four years, with a similar system of qualification as for the FIBA Basketball World Cup. It was originally scheduled to take place between 2 and 19 September 2021, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics to 2021, it was postponed to September 2022.

The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cupqualification for the FIBA Europe region, began in August 2017 and concluded in February 2019. Contrary to previous years, no teams were automatically placed into the World Cup, so all FIBA Europe nations had to participate in qualification.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">EuroBasket 2022 qualification</span> Qualification for the EuroBasket 2022

The EuroBasket 2022 qualification was a basketball competition that was played from November 2017 to February 2021, to determine the 20 FIBA Europe nations who would join the automatically qualified co-hosts Czech Republic, Georgia, Italy, and Germany at the EuroBasket 2022 finals tournament.

Twelve teams qualified for the women's basketball at the 2020 Summer Olympics tournament. The host nation and the 2018 World Cup winner qualified. Those two teams, however, had to play in the pre-qualifying and qualifying tournaments and took one of the qualifying spots from those tournaments. Thus, while two of the World Qualifying Tournaments provided quota spots to their three top teams, the other two tournaments provided quota spots only to the top two teams plus either the host nation or the World Cup winner.

Group C of the EuroBasket Women 2019 took place between 27 and 30 June 2019. The group consisted of Hungary, Italy, Slovenia and Turkey and played all of its games at Niš, Serbia.

The 2021 European Women Basketball Championship, commonly called EuroBasket Women 2021, was the 38th edition of the continental tournament in women's basketball, sanctioned by the FIBA Europe. It was co-hosted by Strasbourg, France and Valencia, Spain between 17 and 27 June 2021. It was the third time to be hosted by multiple countries. The tournament also served as part of European qualification for the 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, with the top six nations advancing to the qualifying tournaments.
