European Speedrunner Assembly (abbreviated to ESA), formerly European Speedster Assembly, is a semi-annual video game speedrunning charity marathon held in Sweden. Held since 2012, the events have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for several charities. [1] [2]

Contents

The two flagship events of the European Speedrunner Assembly are European Speedrunner Assembly Winter, held in February every year, and ESA Summer, held between June and August every year. Both events last seven days. In addition to these events, ESA also hosts smaller European-based speedrunning events such as the Benelux Speedrunner Gathering (BSG), as well as Break the Record: Live, a three-day competition to break the world record of a specified game and category. They also host special charity marathons. [3] By 2016, ESA was the second-largest speedrunning event globally. [4] It has been described as "a kind of European federation for these virtual 'athletes'." [5]

Events are broadcast live on Twitch. Viewers are encouraged to donate with incentives and bids, such as choosing character names, having runners perform additional tasks, or extra bonus runs.

Format

ESA runs two main marathons, ESA Winter and ESA Summer, which raise money for charities such as Alzheimerfonden  [ sv ]. [6] Speedrunners present runs where they try to beat their chosen games and categories within an estimated time, which is broadcast live on Twitch and in front of a studio audience. [1] Many of the runs feature bonus incentives and additional challenges, such as difficulty upgrades or being performed blindfolded. [7] [8] There are also non-standard speedrun formats, such as relay races. [9]

When donating, donors can choose to put their money towards a particular incentive, such as naming characters.

European Speedrunner Assembly is affiliated with several smaller marathons that use the ESAMarathon Twitch channel, such as Benelux Speedrunner Gathering (BSG) [10] and United Kingdom Speedrunner Gathering (UKSG). [11]

Break the Record: Live

Break the Record: Live is a sponsored event run by ESA, where the top qualifying players of a particular game and category compete to break the world record live in said category. A prize pool is split amongst the runners depending on their placings during the event, with additional prize money being awarded for breaking the record.

The first event was announced on December 26, 2019, for the Super Mario 64 120 Star category. The seven highest ranked Super Mario 64 speedrunners were flown to Sweden to participate in the live event. The event was sponsored by Elgato Gaming with a $5,000 prize pool, with the first prize being $3,000. An additional $5,000 grand prize was allocated for breaking the record. [12]

In July 2020, the second event, for Doom Eternal , was held during ESA Summer Online 2020, sponsored by the internet security developer Kaspersky Lab. [13] [14]

History

In August 2012, Swedish gaming organisation Ludendi hosted a streaming marathon called European Speedster Assembly in Skövde, raising money for the charity Hand in Hand. [17] It was inspired by Games Done Quick, a similar charity marathon based in America. [4]

Ludendi also hosted the events in 2013 [18] and 2014. From 2015, ESA has used the Twitch channel europeanspeedsterassembly. [19]

In 2016, ESA changed its name to European Speedrunner Assembly. [20] [21]

In 2018 the organisation officially registered as a company under the name European Speedrunner Assembly AB. [22] The ESA planned to open an amusement arcade in a former industrial site in Växjö in November 2018. [23] This later turned into Smålands Spelhall which officially opened in 2019. [24]

In 2023, ESA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting any and all gender identities. [25]

Speedrunning is the act of playing a video game, or section of a video game, with the goal of completing it as fast as possible. Speedrunning often involves following planned routes, which may incorporate sequence breaking and can exploit glitches that allow sections to be skipped or completed more quickly than intended. Tool-assisted speedrunning (TAS) is a subcategory of speedrunning that uses emulation software to slow the game down and create a precisely controlled sequence of inputs.

A tool-assisted speedrun or tool-assisted superplay is generally defined as a speedrun or playthrough composed of precise inputs recorded with tools such as video game emulators. Tool-assisted speedruns are generally created with the goal of creating theoretically perfect playthroughs. Speed Demos Archive is a website dedicated to video game speedruns. SDA's primary focus is hosting downloadable, high-quality speedrun videos, and currently has runs of over eleven hundred games, with more being added on a regular basis. SDA additionally used to host two annual speedrunning charity marathons, Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) and Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ), before Games Done Quick LLC started holding the event independently in 2015. It hosted nine marathons in total, and raised over $2.7 million for various charities, with the most successful one being AGDQ 2014 which raised just over $1 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

Adam Lindgren, known by his handle Armada, is a Swedish professional Super Smash Bros. player from Gothenburg. He is widely considered one of the greatest Super Smash Bros. Melee players of all time and the greatest Melee Peach player of all time. Lindgren has won several major tournaments: he is a three-time champion of GENESIS, two-time champion of EVO, two-time champion of Apex and one-time champion of The Big House. Due to the perceived negative connotations of video games, both industry members and consumers of video games have frequently collaborated to counter this perception by engaging in video gaming for charitable purposes. Some of these have been charitable groups, or regular and annual events, and the scope of these efforts have continued to grow, with more than US$22 million having been raised by video game-related charity efforts in the first half of 2018 alone.

David Hunt, known online as GrandPooBear, is an American video game streamer, speedrunner, and creator of Kaizo Super Mario levels. He has also performed at various Games Done Quick events and TwitchCon, and has hosted his own in-person and virtual speedrunning events.

The Z Event is a francophone charity project created by Adrien Nougaret and Alexandre Dachary whose goal is to bring together French streamers to collect donations that will support a charity. It is hosted on the Twitch streaming platform.

Zfg is an American speedrunner and streamer known for his The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time gameplay. He has held various records in speedrunning the game and its alternative version Master Quest, most notably the 100% completion category for the original game, for which he had held the record since mid-2015. He was the first person to complete Ocarina of Time to 100% in under four hours. He currently holds the record in the 100% SRM category with a time of 3 hours, 0 minutes, and 39 seconds, as of December 2022.
