In this season Tricolor won the Campeonato Paulista, league of State of São Paulo for the 21st time and the continental cup, Copa Libertadores de America, beating Atlético Paranaense in the first final with teams from the same country of tournament history, winning by 4–0 in the second match, 5–1 in aggregate. The continental title enabled São Paulo to participate of FIFA Club World Championship in the end of season when the club became a world champion for the third time, defeating the English club, European champions Liverpool in the final with a single goal scored by Mineiro in the 27th minute of first time. In the Campeonato Brasileiro São Paulo finished in 11th position and was eliminated by Internacional in first round of Copa Sudamericana.
The 2001 season was São Paulo's 72nd season since club's existence. São Paulo won the Torneio Rio-São Paulo for the first time beating Botafogo in an aggregated score by 6-2. In Campeonato Paulista the club finished in 8th place. Tricolor reach the Quarter-finals at the Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa do Brasil losing to Atlético Paranaense in the league and to Grêmio at the cup. São Paulo was eliminated at the group stage in the Copa Mercosur and became a runners-up at the Copa dos Campeões after was defeated by Flamengo.

Tricolor played also the Copa do Brasil but was eliminated in quarterfinals losing to Avaí in aggregate score, 1-0 (home); 1-3 (away). In Copa Sudamericana was defeated by Paraguayan club Libertad at the round of 16. The club finished the season with a sixth position in the league, not qualifying to Copa Libertadores. The highlight of year was the goalkeeper and capitain Rogério Ceni. The oldest and considered main player of club reach the accomplishment of 100 goals in career on 27 March against rival Corinthians by Campeonato Paulista with a 2–1 win and a done of 1000 matches on 7 September also victory by 2–1 against Atlético Mineiro in the Série A.

In the last match of midfielder at November 30, in a 1-1 draw against Figueirense in a game by 37th round of the league, Kaká was acclaimed for more than 30,000 São Paulo fans. Other highlight was noted by the 41 years old capitain Rogerio Ceni that announced the retirement at the end of season. In April, Muricy Ramalho left the São Paulo FC due to health problems and the team was trained by assistant coach Milton Cruz during a few matches and managed by Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio and Brazilian Doriva in the course of the season. After only 7 matches Doriva was replaced by Milton Cruz who trained the club again at the end of the year. In the Copa do Brasil, Tricolor was defeated by Santos in semifinals with two losses by 1–3, 2–6 on aggregate score. By national league a final 4th position take a place in the first stage of the Copa Libertadores. The main event of the year was the retirement of goalkeeper Rogério Ceni in a symbolical match between the world champions players by São Paulo in 1992 and 2005. The final result was 5–3 to 2005 champions. Rogério Ceni stopped his career at 42 with a record of 1237 matches, 131 goals during his 23 seasons by Tricolor.
