Failed at Math(s) is the debut studio album by British indie rock band Panchiko. The album was self-published by the band on 5 May 2023. The album consists of the first new material recorded by the band since their reunion after the discovery of their debut EP, D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L .
Panchiko had originally consisted of four friends who recorded a variety of EPs, and had disbanded quickly after in 2000. [1] In 2020, the band decided to reform after the successful search for their debut EP, D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L, where a copy had originally been found in a charity shop. [2]
Failed at Math(s) was announced on 13 February 2023. [3] Three singles were issued for the album; "Failed at Math(s)", which was released on 8 March; [4] "Until I Know", released on 30 March; and "Portraits", released on 12 April. Music videos for the singles, as well as for the track "Gwen Everest", were released on the band's YouTube channel. "Specific conditions were cultivated in order to recreate the writing process of 20 years ago: sat on the sofa, surrounded by snacks, games consoles; music machines were sampled, lyrics mumbled, and three chord progressions were strummed over drum loops and blips and bloops."
Failed at Math(s) has been described as indie rock, [6] trip hop [3] [8] and electronic. [7] Some of the tracks on the album, such as "Until I Know", "Gwen Everest", "Think That's Too Wise" and "Rocking with Keith" were the product of reworked demos previously recorded by the band before they disbanded. These demos were released on the compilation album, Ferric Oxide (Demos 1997-2001). [9]
The opening track "Failed at Math(s)" was described as a lo-fi track containing "sparkling synth, grungy atmospheric beats and distorted vocals". [9] Andy Wright, a band member of Panchiko, explained in an interview that the track is about breaking free from habits in order to improve oneself. [7] The track "Portraits" was described as a dark and mellow track with ambient instrumentals. [9] Owain Davies, the lead singer of the band, discussed how the song "covers feelings of pressure and tackling things on your own". [7]
The track "Gwen Everest" contains lyrics about watching a loved one make poor choices, and seeing the consequences take place. [10] The track was one of the reworked demos previously recorded by the band. [7] The closer for the album, "Rocking with Keith" was another reworked demo and was described as "[boasting] a prominent piano feature and clocks in at over five and a half minutes long". [9] According to Davies, the track was originally recorded on an Akai DPS12 multi-tracker. [7]
Failed at Math(s) was released on 5 May 2023 on CD, LP and digital services. The album marked the first new material from the band in 23 years, and their first studio album altogether. [10] [9]
To coincide with the release of the album, the band embarked on a tour across the United States with supporting bands Horse Jumper of Love and LSD and the Search for God, which later expanded into the UK and Europe. [3] This tour commenced on 5 May in Seattle, and concluded on 1 December in Bologna. [10]

Sneaker Pimps are an English electronic music band, formed in Hartlepool in 1994. They are best known for their debut album, Becoming X (1996), and its singles "6 Underground" and "Spin Spin Sugar". The band takes its name from an article the Beastie Boys published in their Grand Royal magazine about a man they hired to track down classic sneakers.
Wire are an English rock band, formed in London in October 1976 by Colin Newman, Graham Lewis, Bruce Gilbert (guitar), George Gill and Robert Grey. They were originally associated with the punk rock scene, appearing on The Roxy London WC2 album, and were instrumental to the development of post-punk, while their debut album, Pink Flag, was influential for hardcore punk.
Gang of Four are an English post-punk band, formed in 1976 in Leeds. The original members were singer Jon King, guitarist Andy Gill, bass guitarist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham. There have been many different line-ups including, among other notable musicians, Sara Lee, Gail Ann Dorsey, and David Pajo. After a brief lull in the 1980s, different constellations of the band recorded two studio albums in the 1990s. Between 2004 and 2006 the original line-up was reunited; Gill toured using the name between 2012 and his death in 2020. In 2021, the band announced that King, Burnham, and Lee would be reuniting for a US tour in 2022 with David Pajo on guitar and Sara Lee returning to the band. They continued to perform live, including at the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena, California; headlining Luna Fest in Coimbra, Portugal and a UK Tour in October 2023. They announced that their "Long Goodbye" tour in 2025 would be their last. For this tour, King and Burnham were joined by Ted Leo on guitar and Gail Greenwood on bass.
No Doubt is an American rock band formed in Anaheim, California in 1986. For most of its career, the band has consisted of vocalist and founding member Gwen Stefani, guitarist Tom Dumont, bassist Tony Kanal and drummer Adrian Young. Keyboardist Eric Stefani, Gwen's brother, was also a member when the band started to release albums in 1992. Since the mid-1990s, trombonist Gabrial McNair and trumpeter Stephen Bradley have performed with the band as session and touring musicians.

Cocteau Twins were a Scottish rock band active from 1979 to 1997. They were formed in Grangemouth on the Firth of Forth by Robin Guthrie and Will Heggie (bass), adding Elizabeth Fraser (vocals) in 1981. In 1983, Heggie was replaced with multi-instrumentalist Simon Raymonde. The group earned critical praise for their ethereal, effects-laden sound and the soprano vocals of Fraser, whose lyrics often eschew any recognisable language. They pioneered the 1980s alternative subgenre of dream pop and helped define what would become shoegaze.
Tony Ashwin Kanal is a British-American musician, songwriter and record producer who is known for his work as the bassist and co-writer for the rock bands No Doubt and Dreamcar. His career outside of performing includes production and songwriting credits with artists such as Pink, Weezer, Elan Atias and No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani's solo work.
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is the third studio album by American rock band Brand New. It was recorded over the course of a full year, from 2005 to 2006, in studios in Long Island and Massachusetts with producer Mike Sapone, and released on November 21, 2006 through Interscope Records, making it their major label debut. The album arose following the online leaking of several unfinished demos that were meant to be early blueprints of the upcoming record.

Sarah Elizabeth "Sadie" Dupuis is an American musician who is the guitarist, lead vocalist and lyricist for the band Speedy Ortiz. She has also released two solo albums, Slugger and Haunted Painting, under the name Sad13. Dupuis has published two books of poetry. A portrait of her was featured on the August 22, 2022 cover of The New Yorker. In October 2023, Rolling Stone included Dupuis on its 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list.

Formed between 1997 and 1998, the band originally consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Owain Davies, guitarist/keyboardist Andrew "Andy" Wright, bassist Shaun Ferreday, and a drummer named John. A year after the revival of Panchiko in 2020, they were joined by guitarist Robert "Rob" Harris and John Schofield, who replaced their original drummer.

The album was announced on 22 November 2024, with the title track "Ginkgo" releasing on the same day. On 3 January 2025, a second single "Shandy in the Graveyard" was released, featuring American rapper Billy Woods.
