As of the census [7] of 2000, there were 1,955 people, 868 households, and 540 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,378.2 inhabitants per square mile (532.1/km2). There were 926 housing units at an average density of 652.8 per square mile (252.0/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 98.72% White, 0.10% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.26% of the population.
There were 868 households, out of which 24.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.82.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 20.6% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who were 65 years of age or older. Fairdale is a former census-designated place in southern Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 7,658 at the 2000 census. In 2003, the area was annexed to the city of Louisville due to a merger between the city and Jefferson County's unincorporated community.
