Falu (born Falguni Shah; in Bombay, India) is an American singer whose music blends ancient classical Indian melodies with contemporary western sounds. She has worked and collaborated with a wide array of artists including A. R. Rahman ( Slumdog Millionaire , Yo-Yo Ma (in The Silk Road Project), Philip Glass, Wyclef Jean, her teacher Ustad Sultan Khan, Blues Traveler, Ricky Martin and Bernie Worrell (Parliament Funkadelic). In 2022, she won the Grammy Award for Best Children's Album for her album A Colorful World. She was also nominated for Best Children's Album for her 2019 release of Falu's Bazaar, and for Best Global Music Performance for her 2023 release of Abundance in Millets .
In her early years in Mumbai, Falu was trained in the Jaipur gharana musical tradition, honing her talent for up to 16 hours a day. She later continued studying under the sarangi/vocal master Ustad Sultan Khan.
Falu moved to the States in 2000, and joined the Boston-based Indo-American band Karyshma as a lead vocalist. In 2001, she met up with Asian Massive leader Karsh Kale, and hit the nationwide university, club and festival circuits. After fulfilling a 2-year Indian music visiting lectureship at Tufts University in Boston, Falu moved to New York where she formed her own band of the same name. They began performing at music venues throughout New York, quickly garnering the attention of fans across the city.
In 2004, Falu was invited to perform as a soloist with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project . In 2005 she was asked to serve as one of Carnegie Hall's Musical Ambassadors to New York City. In May 2006, she delivered her debut solo performance at Carnegie Hall (Zankel). Later in the year she joined the Born Into Brothels Ensemble (from the 2004 Academy-Award winning film) and in early 2007 she collaborated with Wyclef Jean, lending her vocal style to the score of Angelina Jolie's directorial debut A Place in Time . In January 2008, Falu and her band were featured on FOX channel's Fearless Music, where her original song Rabba became the first Hindi song ever to be aired on the network. [1]
In August 2007, Falu released her self-titled debut CD. [2] Soon afterward, her "Indie Hindi" musical style made its mark in The Wall Street Journal as representative of a new class of musical hybrids. [3]
In May 2009, Falu made a special appearance at the Time 100 Gala—Time magazine's yearly gala celebrating their list of the 100 most influential people in the world—performing a rendition of "Jai Ho" alongside Slumdog Millionaire film composer A. R. Rahman, for an exclusive and star-studded crowd which included First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters, Stella McCartney, Liv Tyler, M.I.A. and more.
In November 2009, Falu was invited to the White House to again sing alongside A. R. Rahman at President Obama's first State Dinner in honor of the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. [4]
2011 was a year of film music for Falu, from writing music for the documentary "The Human Tower" (along with composers Andres Subercaseaux and Rene Veron) to writing for the film "First Sight" (with Sivamani and Mark Tewarson). In the same year, Falu also contributed to Global Noize's sophomore album Prayer For the Planet. She also continued to work closely with Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute, pushing the boundaries of global music collaboration including with kids from New York's Crossroads Juvenile Center and with inmates from Sing Sing Correctional Facility in upstate NY where she, her band and 16 musically talented inmates performed for more than 400 other inmates in early 2012.
In 2013 Falu released her second album entitled "Foras Road", a collection of original and traditional songs inspired by the semi-classical music performed and guarded for centuries by courtesans dwelling on the road of the same name in Bombay. The album was produced by Grammy-winning producer Danny Blume and was featured on NPR's SoundCheck in May 2013. "Foras Road" was then re-released in November 2018.
Falu's band of the same name includes musicians who draw from Indian classical, alternative rock, contemporary pop, and electronic styles to create a mix of East and West—one reason why The New York Times featured Falu in a story titled "Bridging Cultural Gaps with Music." [5] The band members are Gaurav Shah (vocals / harmonium), Mark Tewarson (guitars), Danny Blume (bass), Deep Singh (tabla/percussions), Dave Sharma (percussions) and Soumya Chatterjee (violin).
In 2015, Falu was named one of the 20 most influential global Indian women by the Economic Times of India. In 2018, she won the Women Icons of India award in Mumbai, India. Falu was an integral part of Givenchy's September 11 fashion show (Ricardo Tisci collection under the art direction of Marina Abramović) in NYC, where she performed for a star-studded audience. Falu continues to pursue her commitment to introducing children to the wonders of the world through her Grammy nominated debut kids project, "Falu's Bazaar", which takes families on a musical journey through South Asia, as well as through her artist-in-residence position at Carnegie Hall.
In 2018, she came out with a twelve-song album in Hindi, English, and Gujarati called Falu's Bazaar. It features her husband, singer-songwriter Gaurav Shah, and her mother, classical singer Kishori Dalal. Dalal has also sung a piece called Nishaad's Lullaby, a song in Gujarati without any percussion. The album was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Children's Music category in 2019.
Falu released a her second children's album, A Colorful World, produced by Grammy Award Winning producers Kenya Autie, Mario Sanmarti, and Tina Kids. A Colorful World, mixed and mastered by Grammy Award Winning Engineer, won a Grammu in the 64th Grammy Awards for Best Children's Music Album in 2021 [6]
In 2020, Falu teamed up with bassist Yasushi Nakamura, drummer Clarence Penn and guitarist, and vocalist Clay Ross to form the American Patchwork Quartet. Leveraging immigrant histories and backgrounds, the Quartet interprets timeless songs in a modern 21st century perspective. The group continues to tour performing arts centers around the world. [7]
On Oct 25, 2022 Falu was awarded a Citation by the Mayor of NYC, Eric Adams, during Diwali for successfully representing immigrants in NYC. Later on Nov 1, 2022 she received a Proclamation by the NYC Council “for fostering greater harmony around the world”
Falu and Gaurav Shah collaborated with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a single named "Abundance in Millets" that was released on June 16, 2023 [8] - a song that was inspired by the UN initiative declaring 2023 as the "International Year of Millets". This song was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Global Music Performance category.
Asha Bhosle is an Indian playback singer, entrepreneur, actress and television personality who predominantly works in Indian cinema. Ustad Zakir Hussain is an Indian tabla player, composer, percussionist, music producer and film actor. He is the eldest son of tabla player Alla Rakha. He is widely considered as one of the greatest tabla players of all time.
Shobha Gurtu (1925–2004) was an Indian singer in the light Hindustani classical style. Though she had equal command over pure classical style, it was with light classical music that she received her fame, and in time came to be known as the Thumri Queen, and for the 'Abhinaya' sung in her full-throated voice. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2002.
Karsh Kale is an Indian-American musician born in England. Known primarily for his experimental tabla playing within electronic music contexts, Kale's career has seen him take on roles of an Indian classical tabla player, singer, songwriter, film and TV score composer and DJ. He is considered a pioneer of the Asian Underground genre, bringing elements of Indian music to Electronica and Dance. His career highlights include touring as the supergroup Tabla Beat Science, 6 solo studio records from 1999, the seminal 2005 album "Breathing Under Water" with Anoushka Shankar, scoring and production for the 2019 Bollywood smash hit "Gully Boy", curating 6 acclaimed songs for the Indian Coke Studio in 2012, amongst many others. Kale is also popular for his eclectic collaborations with Sting, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan, U2, Norah Jones, Yoko Ono, and Herbie Hancock to name a few.
Vasundhara Das is an Indian playback singer and former actress. Anoushka Hemangini Shankar is a British-American sitar player and musician of Indian descent, as well as occasional writer. She performs across multiple genres and styles—classical and contemporary, acoustic and electronic. In addition to releasing seven solo studio albums beginning with Anoushka (1998), she has also worked alongside a wide variety of musicians, including Karsh Kale on the full-length collaboration Breathing Under Water (2007) and her father Ravi Shankar. She has received eleven Grammy Awards nominations and was the first musician of Indian origin to perform live and to serve as a presenter at the ceremony. She was the youngest and first woman to receive a British House of Commons Shield.
Prabha Atre was an Indian classical vocalist from the Kirana gharana. She was awarded all three of the Padma Awards by the Government of India. She died after experiencing breathing difficulty in the early hours and was taken to Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital. She died from cardiac arrest before reaching the hospital. Atre died on 13 January 2024, at the age of 91.
Neha Kakkar Singh is an Indian singer. She is the younger sister of playback singers Tony Kakkar and Sonu Kakkar. She began performing at a very early age at religious events. In 2005, she participated in the second season of the singing reality show, Indian Idol. She made her Bollywood debut as a chorus singer in the film Meerabai Not Out. She rose to prominence with the release of the dance track "Second Hand Jawaani" from Cocktail (2012), which was followed by several popular party songs, including "Sunny Sunny" from Yaariyan and "London Thumakda" from the 2014 soundtrack album Queen. Apart from playback singing, Kakkar has appeared in several music videos and as a judge on several television reality shows, including "Indian Idol".
Ustad Sultan Khan was an Indian sarangi player and classical vocalist belonging to Sikar Gharana. He was one of the founding members of the Indian fusion group Tabla Beat Science, with Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, in 2010.

Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat is a 2001 Indian Hindi-language romance film written and directed by Rajiv Rai and produced by Gulshan Rai under the Trimurti Films banner. The film was released on 3 August 2001, introducing Arjun Rampal and starring Sunil Shetty, Aftab Shivdasani, Keerti Reddy.
Kaushiki Chakraborty is an Indian classical vocalist of the Patiala gharana. Her repertoire covers pure classical, Khyals, Dadras, Thumris, Bhajans and several other forms of Indian music. She is the recipient 2005 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music in the Asia-Pacific category. She is the daughter of noted hindustani classical vocalist, Ajoy Chakraborty. Kaushiki is also a trained Carnatic classical vocalist.
Aishwarya Majmudar is an Indian singer. She gained popularity after winning the 2007–08 musical reality show STAR Voice of India - Chhote Ustad at the age of 15. She was highly praised for her performances by the judges throughout the show. She won the competition with Anwesha Datta Gupta. She also took part in Music Ka Maha Muqabala in Himesh Reshamiya's "Himesh's Warriors" team. She has sung several songs for Gujarati and Hindi films. She was also seen in Antakshari – The Great Challenge.

"Mann Mohana" from the film Jodhaa Akbar, "Su Che" from the film What's Your Raashee?, "Wajle Ki Baara" and "Apsara Aali" from Natarang are some of her famous songs. The other notable films she has sung in include Mission Kashmir, Mohabbatein, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Bunty Aur Babli. She is also a singer of Sufi music, as well as Gurbani and other Sikh religious music. She has sung a latest Hindi Music video "Maula Ali Ali" with Mudasir Ali. In 2021 she was selected by BJ Sam the Nigerian international singer and producer to represent India on the first universal Christmas music project with other global music icons including American Actor Paul Raci, Swiss actress Christina Zurbrügg, Ghanaian singer Diana Hopeson. In 2008, she won the title of India's Best Live Performer in the NDTV Imagine singing reality series, Dhoom Macha De (2008).

"Abundance in Millets" is a 2023 song featuring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a husband and wife singing duo, Falu, and Gaurav Shah. The song is about millet, a super grain that may alleviate world hunger. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Global Performance category, but it did not win.
American Patchwork Quartet (APQ) is an American musical group that reinterprets traditional folk songs with multicultural influences. Founded by guitarist and arranger Clay Ross, the group blends elements of Jazz, Hindustani classical music, and Americana to explore themes of immigration, identity, and unity.
