Fat Les was a British band consisting of Blur bassist Alex James, actor Keith Allen, and artist Damien Hirst. Vocals on their singles were provided by Keith Allen (all), Alex James ("Vindaloo"), Keith's daughter Lily Allen ("Who Invented Fish & Chips?"), Andy Kane ("Who Invented Fish & Chips?"), Lisa Moorish ("Naughty Christmas (Goblin in the Office)") and various choirs ("Jerusalem").

Background

James and Hirst first knew each other when they were students at Goldsmiths College, but became friendly when they and Allen met at the Groucho Club. [1] In May 1998, while discussing the forthcoming FIFA World Cup, Allen and James had the idea of creating an unofficial World Cup song, and formed Fat Les (named after a woman they knew). They were later joined by Hirst when they asked him to create artwork for them. [2] Fat Les created the unofficial England national football anthem "Vindaloo" with Guy Pratt and then brought in the singer Andy Kane. The song reached number two in the UK Singles Chart. [3] In the music video, the three band members featured alongside Paul Kaye, Rowland Rivron, Ed Tudor-Pole, Matt Lucas and David Walliams, and appearances by Allen's children Lily and Alfie. [4]

Later in 1998, they recorded "Naughty Christmas (Goblin In The Office)", described as the 'Official Christmas Record', together with Joe Strummer on guitar, Rivron on drums, as well as Matt Lucas and Paul Kaye, and features vocals by Lisa Moorish with Lily Allen in the background. [5] [6] Fat Les also starred in a comedy show with Kaye, Lucas and John Thomson in You Are Here broadcast on Channel 4 on 30 December 1998. [7]

In 2000, Fat Les recorded an official theme for the England football team at Euro 2000 tournament held in Belgium and the Netherlands, with a rendition of the hymn "Jerusalem". [8] It was again fronted by Allen, with Michael Barrymore making an appearance. The track was credited to Fat Les 2000. [3] According to Allen, in choosing the hymn he wanted to "crystallise some kind of English culture" and to reclaim it from the Right. [1] The song was recorded at George Martin's AIR studio at a cost of £50,000 with a full orchestra and four choirs: [1] the London Community Gospel Choir, New London Children's Choir, Syncopeters and London Gay Men's Chorus. [9]

For the 2002 World Cup, they recorded "Who Invented Fish and Chips", which features Lily Allen in her first credited recording and video. [10] [11]

In 2012, Fat Les changed their name to "Fit Les" and recorded "The Official Fit Les Olympic Anthem". Alex James left the group while Rowetta of Happy Mondays fame joined the lineup along with producer Matt Eaton. [12]

Vocalist of the band, Peter Hooton wrote the lyrics in his early 20s, after reading about the Christmas truce of 1914. The song was first recorded under the title "No Man's Land" for a John Peel session in 1983. In 1990, Hooton wrote the chorus after Steve Grimes suggested putting the lyrics of "No Man's Land" to the chord progression of Pachelbel's Canon. To shorten the song for radio, the producer Suggs cut the song to three verses from its original six. Its accompanying music video received heavy rotation on MTV Europe. "Vindaloo" is the debut single by British band Fat Les, released in 1998 and recorded for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. The music was co-written by Blur bassist Alex James and bassist Guy Pratt. The lyrics were written by comedian Keith Allen. The song was originally written as a parody of football chants, but was adopted as one in its own right and became a classic.

The Capital Children's Choir is a children's choir based in London, England. The choir was founded in 2001 by Artistic Director Rachel Santesso and is currently made up of 120 members aged seven to eighteen. As well as performing classical repertoire, the choir is well known for its choral and orchestral reinterpretations of famous pop songs and since September 2008 their videos have received well over 6.1 million views to date within the popular video-sharing site YouTube.

English singer and songwriter Lily Allen has released four studio albums, two extended plays, 23 singles, two promotional singles and 21 music videos. Allen's range of musical genres incorporates styles such as pop, ska, electropop and reggae fusion. She became well known through her Myspace account, on which she started posting demo songs in 2005. The increase of popularity led to a contract with Regal Recordings. Her debut single, "Smile", was released in 2006 and topped the UK Singles Chart for two weeks. Allen's first studio album, Alright, Still (2006), was released shortly after. The album was commercially successful, earning a three times platinum certification in the United Kingdom, and gold in the United States. The album was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 50th Grammy Awards. Follow-up singles "LDN", "Littlest Things" and "Alfie" did not repeat her early success, although they still sold well; "LDN" peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart.

Rachel Zeffira is a Canadian soprano, composer and multi-instrumentalist, currently based in London, England. She is also one half of the duo Cat's Eyes, the other being Faris Badwan of the Horrors.
