Rev. Prof Florence Isabirye Muranga is a Ugandan biochemist, food scientist, academic and corporate executive, who serves as the Director General of "Banana Industrial |Research Development Centre (BIRDC)" under the pilot project of Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID), this project started in an effort to do research on value addition on green banana and later to boost the commercialization of Uganda's bananas through research and industrialization.^[1]

Background and education

She was born in present-day Mayuge District circa 1952, and attended "Kabuli Primary School" for her elementary school education. For her secondary school studies, she attended Gayaza High School, a prestigious boarding girls' middle and high school, located in Gayaza, Wakiso District.^[2]

In 1975 she graduated from Makerere University, Uganda's largest and oldest public university, with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Diploma in Education. In 1990, she was awarded a Master of Science in Food Science by the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. Later in 2000, she graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biochemistry, from Makerere University.^[2]

Work experience

Before her retirement, Florence Isabirye Muranga was a Professor of Nutrition and Biochemistry in the Department of Food Technology and Nutrition at Makerere University. She has special interest in the nutritional value of the banana fruit, particularity the variety called matooke . She has published widely and extensively regarding her research on the subject.^[3]

Banana research

In 2005 Professor Muranga had an encounter with the president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, and the president was impressed with the professor's research. Two years later, the president established the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID) and named Muranaga the Executive Director. The program is an aggressive food-value addition effort, yielding a range of matooke byproducts including (a) tooke biscuits (cookies) (b) tooke powder for porridge (c) tooke flour for matooke meal and bread-making (d) matooke chips for snacking (e) matooke flakes for cereal and (f) matooke starch and others.^[2]

PIBID established a banana farm on a 24 acres (10 ha) piece of land and a modern matooke processing factory in the town of Bushenyi, in Bushenyi District in the Western Region of Uganda.^[2]^[4]

Family

Florence Muranga is married to Manuel Muranga since 1978 and together they are the parents of two sons.^[2]

Other considerations

In November 2016, the president of Uganda appointed a commission of inquiry into the affairs of Makerere University and named Professor Florence Muranga as one of its nine members.^[5] In 2006, the Management Forum of the British Council, based in London, United Kingdom, recognized Professor Muranga as one of the "Top Women in 2006".^[4] At home, she won the Presidential Scientific Innovation Excellence Award at the 2005/06 Presidential Science Awards in recognition of her pomneering work on the matooke fruit.^[4] Since about 2000, Florence Muranga has served as an Assistant Chaplain at Saint Francis Chapel, the principal Anglican church at Makerere University campus in Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.^[4]

Mary Busingye Karoro Okurut, more commonly known as Mary Karoro Okurut, is a Ugandan educator, author and politician. She is the former Cabinet Minister in Charge of General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, in the Ugandan Cabinet. She was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016. Prior to that, from 1 March 2015 until 6 June 2016, she served as Cabinet Minister for National Security. She was appointed to that position on 1 March 2015, replacing Wilson Muruli Mukasa, who was appointed Minister of Gender and Social Issues. Between 2012 and 2015, she served as the Minister of Gender and Social Issues in the Cabinet of Uganda. She was appointed to that position in 2012. She replaced Syda Bumba, who resigned from Cabinet. Mary Karoro Okurut also serves as the elected Member of Parliament for Bushenyi District Women's Constituency. In the 2020 National resistance movement NRM party flag bearer elections, Karooro lost to Annet Katusiime Mugisha who was elected Bushenyi district woman member of parliament in the 2021 Uganda presidential and parliamentary elections.

Irene Nafuna Muloni is a Ugandan electrical engineer, businesswoman and politician and also a Senior Presidential Advisor to Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. She was previously Cabinet Minister for Energy and Minerals in the Ugandan Cabinet until December 2019, serving from 27 May 2011. She retained her position in the new cabinet after the 2016 national elections. She served as the elected Member of Parliament for Bulambuli District Women's Representative, from 2011 until 2016 when she lost her seat to Independent candidate; Sarah Wekomba. She again regained her seat after the 2021 general elections.

Amelia Anne Kyambadde is a Ugandan politician, philanthropist and Women activist. She is the Senior Presidential Advisor on Industry to the President of Uganda. She served as the Cabinet Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives in the Ugandan Cabinet from 2016 to 2021. She replaced Kahinda Otafiire, who was appointed Minister for Justice. Amelia Kyambade represented Mawokota County North in Mpigi District, for two terms in office which ended in May 2021.

Jennifer Semakula Musisi is a Ugandan lawyer and public administrator. She is the first City Leader in Residence at Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative at the Ash Center of the Harvard Kennedy School, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. She was appointed to this position in January 2019.

Waiswa is a health policy and health systems expert with a special interest in maternal, newborn and child health in low and middle-income countries.
