"Fvck You" is a song by Nigerian singer Kizz Daniel. It was released as the lead single from his third studio album King of Love (2020) on 15 March 2019 and was produced and co-written by Young Jonn. [1] The song went viral after an open-verse challenge with many different African artists participating such as Tiwa Savage, Seyi Shay, Simi, Falz, Wyclef Jean, Pasuma, Ruggedman, and Sound Sultan, among others.

Background

"Fvck You" was released to promote Kizz Daniel's (at the time) upcoming London tour at the O2 Arena. [1] Additionally, the song served as a follow-up to his hit single "Madu" off No Bad Songz (2018), his second studio album, and was the lead single off King of Love (2020), his third studio album. [2]

Viral open-verse challenge

After the release of "Fvck You," the song increased in popularity due to an open-verse challenge involving a variety of artists who participated. Artists like Tiwa Savage, Seyi Shay, Simi, Vector, Lil Kesh, CDQ, Blaqbonez, Sarkodie, Falz, Flyboy I.N.C label signee Demmie Vee, and even the producer himself Young Jonn participated, among other non-mainstream artists. [3]

A similar thing happened with Nigerian rapper Olamide's 2016 hit single "Who You Epp?," with artists like Wande Coal, Phyno, and Reminisce participating in the challenge. [4]

Controversy

Female Nigerian singer, Tiwa Savage, released her "Fvck You" cover on 28 March 2019. [5] Fans speculated that the cover was a diss to her ex-husband Tunji "Tee Billz" Balogun or Nigerian musician Wizkid, in which, Tiwa later denied the rumours. [6] [7]

Fellow female Nigerian singer Simi's cover for the "Fvck You" challenge sparked controversy due to a lyric in Yoruba that many interpreted as offensive. She used the phrase "Do you think I have tribal marks?" which is a common expression in Yoruba meaning "Do you think I am stupid?" This was perceived by some, including model Adetutu OJ, as an insult to people with tribal marks, suggesting they are unintelligent. In response to the backlash, Simi issued an apology, acknowledging the insensitivity of the line and expressing regret for using it. She took down the original post, edited the lyrics, and emphasized the importance of being sensitive and empathetic to others. [8]

Music and lyrics

The meaning of "Fvck You" revolves around a failed relationship where the narrator, Kizz Daniel, expresses bitterness and frustration toward his lover's infidelity. The lyrics reveal the narrator feeling wronged as he discovers his partner has been involved with multiple men, many of whom he names in a vulgar, accusatory tone. Despite acknowledging his own role in the relationship by saying he "find sisi yellow," the song largely focuses on slut-shaming his partner for her choices. The song walks a controversial line, with Daniel expressing anger and victim-blaming, while also admitting his lover remains unaffected and continues living her life. [9]

Reception

Wilfred Okiche, writing a review for YNaija, observed that "Fvck You" touched on themes like sex, infidelity, and the dissolution of a relationship. He noted that Kizz Daniel moved away from his usual wholesome image, incorporating name-calling and curse words to convey the song's emotional weight. Despite addressing a common topic of cheating lovers, Okiche pointed out that Daniel's delivery, paired with an effective promotional strategy, helped the song gain widespread attention and resonate with listeners.
