G. H. Nichols and Company was an American industrial company founded by William Henry Nichols and his partner, Charles W. Walter.
In 1870, Nichols, assisted by Walter, started making acids. [1] He attended the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute when it was a prep school and worked at the institute laboratory for two years. [2] Nichols later enrolled at Cornell University in the Science Department with the class of 1872, staying only for a few months. [2] For a supposed participation in a prank, he was expelled from Cornell, refusing to divulge or acknowledge the names of his accomplices. [2] Nichols then went to New York University, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1870, and his M.S. in 1873. [2] His choice of career was attributed to, or influenced by John W. Draper, under whom he chose to study. [2] Draper was considered an outstanding chemist who later became a founder of the American Chemical Society. [2]
In an interview conducted by Gerhard Hershfeld, Nichols revealed that the greatest characteristic of his father (George Henry Nichols) was his "bent for research." [3] He also described his father George as a dreamer who was "always trying to figure out what the world would look like twenty years hence." [3] During the 1870s, with the coming of the electrical age, Nichols put every bit of his ability and resources into producing high-grade copper on a large scale. [3] Nichols was the first man in the chemical industry to use pyrite (the common sulphide of iron) in place of brimstone. [3] According to Nichols in an interview, "the more he discovered, the more he found to discover, and the greater his business grew, the greater was his effort to make it grow." [3]
In 1872, both Nichols and Walter, in order to expand their acid production to sulphuric acid and support their entrepreneurial needs, formed G. H. Nichols and Company, with the financial backing of William's father George Henry Nichols. [1] The company was so named for two reasons: 1) George Henry Nichols provided the majority of the capital; and 2) because William and Walter were too young to incorporate a company in New York State. [1] During their partnership, Nichols looked after the plant and laboratory, while Walter took care of the office and business. [2] Sometime during 1872, the company purchased land and built buildings in the Laurel Hill (now Maspeth) neighborhood in Queens, New York on Newtown Creek. [1] This site offered good fishing, and it afforded convenient water and rail transportation to move their raw and finished material. [1] In 1875, Walter died, leaving the firm's entire responsibility to Nichols. [2]
Nichols hired chemist Francis Herreshoff in 1880 or 1882. [4] Herreshoff built and invented a water-jacketed furnace and quickly became a partner in the company. [4]
From the 1870s to the 1880s, the sulfuric acid produced by the company from the mineral brimstone was stronger than the industry standard, thus upsetting their competition, and greatly increasing their market share. [1] The 1880s were the decades in which both G. H. Nichols and Company and adjoining landowner Samuel Schifflin purchased and filled in a portion of Newtown Creek. [1] Additionally, the company developed and installed a special burner at the plant to produce sulfuric acid from pyrites, a cheaper raw material with a stable price. [1] In order to ensure a steady supply of this raw material, the company purchased a Canadian pyrite mine. [1] This process created a by-product called copper matte, which the company sold. [1]
During the 1880s, the company built and renovated a number of buildings, including two shops on the south side of the South Side Rail Road tracks (now the Lower Montauk Branch owned by and merged with the Long Island Rail Road), a building by Samuel Berg Strasser, and large additions to buildings on both sides of the railroad tracks; all of these structures were on the grounds of Laurel Hill/Newtown Creek. During the latter part of the 19th century in 1899, Nichols Chemical Co. and 11 other companies in the heavy chemical field consolidated and formed General Chemical Co. [5] The reason for this was because these companies believed that pooling their resources would provide greater financial strength and enable them to effect economies in operation, while at the same time they permitted broader research and better service to their customers. [5] Along with Nichols Copper Co., some of these companies included the Martin Kalbfleisch Co., Chappel Chemical Co., Jas. Irwin & Co., National Chemical Co., Dundee Chemical Co., Fairfield Chemical Co., and others. [5] The plants of these component companies, located near the industrial centers of Philadelphia, New York, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago, St. Louis, and in eastern Canada, produced and offered 33 products: sulfuric acid was the most important, while other principal chemicals included muriatic, nitric, acetic, and hydrofluoric acids, sulfate of alumina and related alums, and sulfate of soda (crude salt cake and refined Glauber's salt). [5] All of these materials involved the use of sulfuric acid as a raw material. [5]
In an interview, Charles Walter Nichols (or C.W. Nichols) explained that the reason his father William Henry Nichols' business grew and became one of the largest and most successful in the country was because of Phelps Dodge with its huge copper volume. [3] During the 1890s, the Nichols Copper Company (renamed from G.H. Nichols and Company in 1891) signed the first contract with Phelps Dodge, and since then around 90 percent of Laurel Hill's business came from Phelps Dodge. [3] The contract also granted the Phelps Dodge Corporation to deliver a minimum of one million pounds of blister copper for over three years. [1] This economically symbiotic relationship lasted until 1922. Phelps Dodge provided 90 percent of the blister copper Nichols Copper Company used, to produce 100 percent pure copper. [1] During the 1920s, Phelps Dodge invested $3.5 million in the Nichols Copper Company's plant modernization projects in exchange for stock in Nichols Copper Company. [1] The plant's production of copper dramatically increased. [1]
According to "The Trustees of the Nichols Chemical Co.: Addition to Draft," the writer explains how Dr. James Douglas, the founder of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, suggested to William Earle Dodge that "the time would come when refineries would be built near mines." [6] Problems these companies had to consider included transportation, distribution, and administration. [6] In 1928, it was agreed that Nichols' capital would be increased and the stock issued to finance a proposed new plant in El Paso, Texas. [6] All the new stock was taken by Phelps Dodge Corporation. [6]
In 1930, Dr. William Henry Nichols died; Phelps Dodge purchased the Laurel Hill Plant that same year. [1] According to C.W. Nichols in his interview, Phelps Dodge took an active financial interest in 1937. The construction of the El Paso refinery was covered by Phelps Dodge and Calmat Arizona purchases of Nichols' Stock. In February 1984, the company closed the El Paso refinery permanently due to high costs and changing markets. [1] The plant's final products included copper, silver, gold, copper and nickel sulphates, and small amounts of selenium, tellurium, platinum, and palladium; the company had produced these materials throughout the twentieth century. [1] The El Paso refinery was expected to fulfill the company's production needs. [1] In September 1986, the company was sold to the United States Postal Service. [1] Ten years later, the postal service sued the company in response to how they did not sufficiently clean up the site; the court then ordered the Phelps Dodge Corporation to buy back the property. Finally, in 2001, all buildings belonging to the company were torn down.

There is usually an oil depot at or near an oil refinery for the storage of incoming crude oil feedstock as well as bulk liquid products. In 2020, the total capacity of global refineries for crude oil was about 101.2 million barrels per day.
Phelps Dodge Corporation was an American mining company founded in 1834 as an import-export firm by Anson Greene Phelps and his two sons-in-law William Earle Dodge, Sr. and Daniel James. The latter two ran Phelps, James & Co., the part of the organization based in Liverpool, England. The import-export firm at first exported United States cotton from the Deep South to England and imported various metals to the US needed for industrialization. With the expansion of the Western frontier in North America, the corporation acquired mines and mining companies, including the Copper Queen Mine in Cochise County, Arizona and the Dawson, New Mexico coal mines. It operated its own mines and acquired railroads to carry its products. By the late 19th century, it was known as a mining company.

Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited was a Canadian mining company with operations in 18 countries, involved in the exploration, mining, processing, and marketing of metal and mineral products, including nickel, copper, cobalt, and platinum. In 1982 the company was renamed Falconbridge Limited. It was listed on the TSX and NYSE (FAL), and had revenue of US$6.9 billion in 2005. In August 2006, it was absorbed by Swiss-based mining company Xstrata, which had formerly been a major shareholder. On 28 October 2007, Falconbridge Limited changed its name to the Xstrata Canada Corporation.
Newtown Creek, a 3.5-mile (6-kilometer) long tributary of the East River, is an estuary that forms part of the border between the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, in New York City. Channelization made it one of the most heavily-used bodies of water in the Port of New York and New Jersey and thus one of the most polluted industrial sites in the United States, containing years of discarded toxins, an estimated 30,000,000 US gallons of spilled oil, including the Greenpoint oil spill, raw sewage from New York City's sewer system, and other accumulation from a total of 1,491 sites.
La Oroya is a city on the River Mantaro and capital of the Yauli Province, located in the Department of Junin in central Peru. It is situated on the eastern watershed of the Andes at an altitude of 3,745 m, some 176 km east-north-east of the national capital, Lima. La Oroya is the location of a smelting operation that earned the town a place on the Blacksmith Institute's 2007 report on "The World's Worst Polluted Places". It is also the eastern endpoint of the Central Highway of Peru.

Charles Walter "Walt" Nichols, was an American industrialist who, with his father, William H. Nichols, helped organize the merger of 12 companies in 1899 to create General Chemical, which in 1921 joined four other companies to form Allied Chemical & Dye Corporation, a precursor to AlliedSignal, now owned by Honeywell as its specialty materials business. Walt Nichols, who served as a vice president and general manager at General Chemical and later Allied, also acquired the land and built what is now known at Pleasantdale Chateau in West Orange, New Jersey.
William Henry Nichols was an American chemist and businessman. He was instrumental in building the chemical supply business in the U.S. The specialty materials business of Honeywell traces its roots back to a small sulfuric acid company he started in 1870. Nichols was one of the original founders of the American Chemical Society, serving as president in 1918 and 1919. The New York branch of the society gives a prestigious award every year that is named after him, the William H. Nichols Medal Award. He attended New York University.
Daniel Willis James was the son of an American merchant who with his cousin, William Earl Dodge Jr., transformed Phelps, Dodge & Co. from a predominantly mercantile business into one of the largest copper producers in the world.

The El Paso and Southwestern Railroad began in 1888 as the Arizona and South Eastern Railroad, a short line serving copper mines in southern Arizona. Over the next few decades, it grew into a 1200-mile system that stretched from Tucumcari, New Mexico, southward to El Paso, Texas, and westward to Tucson, Arizona, with several branch lines, including one to Nacozari, Mexico. The railroad was bought by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1924 and fully merged into its parent company in 1955. The EP&SW was a major link in the transcontinental route of the Golden State Limited.
William Earl Dodge Jr. was an American businessman, activist, and philanthropist. For many years, he was one of two controlling partners in the Phelps Dodge Corporation, one of the largest copper mining corporations in the United States.
The Detroit Copper Mining Company was an American copper mining and smelting operation based in Morenci, Arizona. Incorporated in July 1872, it existed as an independent company until 1897, when a controlling interest in the company was purchased by the predecessor of the Phelps Dodge Corporation. It continued to exist as a subsidiary of Phelps Dodge & Co until 1917, when all Phelps Dodge operations in the area were consolidated into the new Phelps Dodge Corporation, Morenci Branch.
Laurel Hill was a railroad station on the Lower Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road in Long Island City, New York. It existed briefly around the 1880s and was located where Clifton Street used to intersect the railroad line.
The Morenci Mine is a large copper mine located near Morenci, Arizona, United States. Morenci represents one of the largest copper reserves in the United States and in the world, having estimated reserves of 3.2 billion tonnes (3.5×109 short tons) of ore grading 0.16% copper. It is located in Greenlee County, just outside the company town of Morenci and the town of Clifton. Freeport-McMoRan is the principal owner and, since 2016, Sumitomo Group has owned a 28% interest in the mine.

Elisha Peck (1789-1851) was a Massachusetts-born merchant who formed a partnership with Anson Green Phelps. He ran the British side of their business from Liverpool for about thirteen years. The partnership ended in 1834 after an accident at their New York warehouse claimed the lives of seven people. Their assets were divided and Peck took ownership of the metal manufacturing plants at Haverstraw, New York. Phelps continued with the mercantile business that he had developed with Peck, forming a new company called Phelps Dodge.
