G. R. Swaminathan is an Indian judge of the Madras High Court.
G. R. Swaminathan was born in 1968. He hails from Thiruvarur. [1] He completed his law degree (B.L.) in Central Law College,Salem and Dr.Ambedkar Government Law College. [2]
In 1991,he became an advocate. In 1997,he established an independent practice in Puducherry,and in 2004,he relocated to Madurai after the Madras High Court established the Madurai Bench. In 2014,he was chosen as the Assistant Solicitor General of India for the High Court's Madurai Bench. [1] There were allegations that Swaminathan,during his tenure as an Additional Solicitor General,had participated in a programme organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party. [3]
He was Judge of the Madras High Court on 28 June 2017. [2] He is due to retire from service on 31 May 2030. [4] Swaminathan was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Madras High Court in April 2019. [5]
Swaminathan was a part of the Hindu Munnani in 2015. [6]
A lawyer representing Democratic Advocates' Association,wrote to the Madras High Court's Chief Justice in July 2022,requesting the resignation of Swaminathan,who had lauded BJP leader K. Annamalai in a court case,based on the premise that the court must be impartial and cannot endorse any political party. [7] [8] The association asserted that Swaminathan's continued position is a threat to the autonomy of the Judiciary as it would instil fear among people to express concerns against the BJP. [9] [8]
Arun Kumar v. Inspector General of Registration in this Justice G. R. Swaminathan banned unnecessary medical interventions on Intersex infants and children in Tamil Nadu and this verdict was highly cited in multiple court cases including the recognition of Same Sex Marriage Union or Marriage Equality Case in The Supreme Court of India. [10] The United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights appreciated the judgement in her report [11] and this verdict is highlighted in the Intersex Legal Mapping 2023 by ILGA World. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is an Indian regional political party with great influence in the state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry. It is a Dravidian party founded by the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu M. G. Ramachandran (M.G.R.) at Madurai on 17 October 1972 as a breakaway faction from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam after M. Karunanidhi expelled him from the party for demanding an account as the party treasurer. The party is adhering to the policies of socialism and secularism based on the principles of C. N. Edappadi Karuppa Palaniswami,often referred to by his initials E.P.S.,is an Indian politician who is the current leader of opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He served as the 7th chief minister of Tamil Nadu,from 2017 to 2021. He has been the General Secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) since 28 March 2023. In December 2017,Shankar was elected to the executive board of ILGA Asia. In August 2020,the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment appointed Shankar as the South Regional representative in the National Council for Transgender Persons.
Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh is the second seniormost Judge at the Madras High Court in India since April 2016. He briefly officiated as the Acting Chief Justice of the court from February 2017 till the appointment of Indira Banerjee as Chief Justice in April 2017. Srishti Madurai was established on 2 September 2011 by Gopi Shankar Madurai as the first genderqueer and LGBT student volunteer group designed to address the problems of LGBT people in the non-metro cities of Tamil Nadu. In October 2011 Srishti Madurai launched India's first helpline for intersex,genderqueer,and LGBT people at Madurai. In June 2013 the helpline turned to offer service for 24 hours with a tagline "Just having someone understanding to talk to can save a life". Srishti Madurai also organized Asia's first Genderqueer Pride Parade at Madurai.
Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani is a former Indian judge and prosecutor,who last served as the chief justice of the Madras High Court. Previously,as a judge of the Bombay High Court,she notably upheld the conviction of several persons for the rape of a pregnant Muslim woman during the 2002 Gujarat riots,chastising investigative authorities for their inaction in the matter,and also refused parole for those convicted in the 1993 Bombay bombings. It is one of the oldest high courts of India along with Calcutta High Court in Kolkata and Bombay High Court in Mumbai. The Madras High Court is one of four charter high courts of colonial India established in the four Presidency Towns of Madras,Bombay,Allahabad and Calcutta by letters patent granted by Queen Victoria,dated 26 June 1862. It exercises original jurisdiction over the city of Chennai,as well as extraordinary original jurisdiction,civil and criminal,under the letters patent and special original jurisdiction for the issue of writs under the Constitution of India. Her selection engendered controversy after lawyers alleged her to have given hate speeches against religious minorities and unsuccessfully petitioned the Supreme Court of India to withdraw the appointment.
