History

In June 1998, [1] Yumi Nakashima (nicknamed Yuu) and Akiko Hamada (nicknamed Akko), both alumnae of the same year at Shoyo High School in Kagoshima of Kyūshū, [2] formed a band with the goal of participating in a national competition. [3] They had previously played together in a Judy and Mary cover band while in high school along with three other girls from their school. [4] The band broke up when the members graduated; Yuu and Akko wanted to continue but the other members did not. [5] In college, Yuu and Akko formed a new band, along with a boy who played the drums and was the same age as them. [6] In November 1998 they participated in the Yamaha Music Foundation's Teens' Music Festival as GO GO 7188. [7] They didn't win the grand prize but later signed to the talent agency breast/milia.

Drummer Takayuki Hosokawa (nicknamed Turkey) joined GO!GO!7188 in 1999, [8] and the band then signed with major label Capitol Music (Toshiba-EMI). They went to Tokyo in February 2000, [9] and started recording on the same day they arrived. [10] Their first single, "Taiyō," was released a few months later on June 28. [11] GO!GO!7188 starting recording their debut album in September of that year with plans to release it in December. [9] The album, Dasoku Hokō, was released on December 6, 2000, and peaked at number 25 on the Oricon albums chart. [12]

In April 2001, Dotanba de Cancel was released as the first single from GO!GO!7188's follow up album. Reviewers noted the song's sad melody and lyrics, which stood in contrast to their usually upbeat material. [13] [14] That summer, the band played at the Rock In Japan Festival on August 5. [15]

GO!GO!7188 released their second album, Gyotaku, on November 21, 2001. Reviewers pointed out the "garage-style" [16] rock, melodies "filled with Taishō era romanticism" and "well-constructed key changes" present in the songs. [17] The album surpassed its predecessor, reaching 17 on the Oricon chart. [18]

On October 13, 2003, Akko released her solo album Kirari under the name of Akiko Hamada.

On March 1, 2004, Yu released her solo album Ten no Mikaku.

On November 2, 2005, Yu formed a new band, Chirinuruwowaka. On September 28, Akko released a major solo album "Aruyoude Naiyoude, Arumono" under the name of Akiko Hamada.

On October 1, 2006, Akiko Hamada announced on her official site that she had gotten married and had changed her name to Akiko Noma. [19] That same month, GO!GO!7188 released their fifth studio album, Parade. [20] The band commented that after pursuing solo activities in the previous year, they had learned that they "did music for fun," which provided the focus for making the album. [21]

In early 2007, GO!GO!7188 transferred to BMG Japan. [22] That March, the band carried out their first tour of the United States as part of the multi-band Japan Nite tour, including performances in New York City, Los Angeles, and at SXSW in Austin, Texas. [23] [24] [5] Later that year, in August, GO!GO!7188 returned to the United States for a second tour, playing at Musikfest in Bethel, Pennsylvania, as well as concerts in New York City and Chicago. [25] [26] [27]

On October 24, 2007, GO!GO!7188 released their sixth album and first on BMG Japan, 569 (pronounced Go Rock). [28] Four days before the album was available in stores, the band made all of the tracks available on their MySpace page. [29]

In 2010, they transferred to FlyingStar Records (Victor Entertainment). [30]

On February 10, 2012, the band announced on their website that they were disbanding. [31] [32]

Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise, written and directed by Hiroyuki Yamaga, was the 1987 debut work of anime studio Gainax. While in creative terms the film was described by its executive producer, president of Bandai Makoto Yamashina, as "pure moviemaking" and having been made "without compromise", its marketing and release plans, under the advertising department of its distributor Toho-Towa, were outside the control of Gainax, and both Gainax and Yamashina acknowledged continuing clashes over these aspects; approximately half of the 800 million yen spent on the film was allocated to advertising and distribution rather than on direct production expenses.

During the production of Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise, the 1987 debut work of anime studio Gainax, the only member of its main staff known to the general public was its musical director, electronic music pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who had recently overseen the soundtrack to the top Japanese box office hit of 1986, Koneko Monogatari. Sakamoto and his assistants from Koneko Monogatari, musicians Koji Ueno, Yuji Nomi, and Haruo Kubota, composed 47 pieces of background music for Royal Space Force in a process that involved using "keywords" given by film director Hiroyuki Yamaga, examining the film's storyboards, making arrangements based on early "prototype" compositions, as well as composing several new original pieces of music as the project developed. 15 of the arrangements would be featured on the film's original soundtrack album.

For the debut work of anime studio Gainax, the 1987 anime film Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise, director Hiroyuki Yamaga set a goal of "natural" dialogue, which he maintained was "a first in Japanese animation." The performers chosen to portray the lead characters, Leo Morimoto as Shirotsugh and Mitsuki Yayoi as Riquinni, were professional actors who nevertheless had little to no experience working in anime. At the same time, Gainax sought out and recruited as Royal Space Force's sound director the highly experienced Atsumi Tashiro of Group TAC, known for his work on the 1974 TV series Space Battleship Yamato. Tashiro accepted the staff position on Royal Space Force despite it being the first project he had undertaken outside his own company in over 20 years, seeing it as a chance to revitalize himself professionally, and the casting of Morimoto and Yayoi as an opportunity to depict genuine emotion and honest and fresh reactions, a spirit that Tashiro remarked he had forgotten within the world of anime.

Carmen Maki, born Maki Annette Lovelace, is a Japanese singer and lyricist, whose career spans more than five decades. After debuting as a folk singer in 1969 with the million-selling single "Toki ni wa Haha no Nai Ko no Yō ni", she quickly shifted to rock music and is best known for fronting the band Oz from 1972 to 1977. Maki was one of the first female rock vocalists in Japan, and her work with Oz and Blues Creation has been credited with pioneering Japanese rock in general.
